12 Strin question

It is a fingerpickers delight. As I pick with 4 fingers, it occured to me to reverse the g-strings to get the full sound picking "up" (nut filing required). Read later that David Crosby did this. Common practise??? Jokes? Never knew that Crosby did it but it makes sense given the Byrds and McGuinn. The interesting thing is the the g-strings are not reversed on the Martin HD-7 (Roger McGuinn model).
