Location: Southern California | Hey Everyone, I had a few of questions about this model and Ovations in General. I recently saw a 2006 koa for sale locally and it was listed as NOS. When I looked at the guitar it looked as if there was a tiny gap between the neck and lyrcord body, about the thickness of a business card, is this normal? Would it have come this way from the factory or does this seem unusual to anyone? It seemed to play fine, if maybe a bit muted, mellow sounding. I didn't see a serial number on it anyway, would it be stamped on the back of the headstock? Lastly, for those that still own one, what do you think about after having had it for some time? Thank you |

Location: SoCal | Just looked at mine...no gap between bowl and neck. If you are talking about a gap between the neck and the Koa top - nope. There are some O's such as the 1537 that have a gap between the neck and top ('floating fretboard'),
If the seller is an Ovation dealer and it is really a NOS (new old stock), the buyer should be able to register the warranty and have a repair done by the factory. Of course, that means sending it back. Also, check to make sure it isn't an FRG (factory reconditioned guitar has different warranty).
As to the guitar, it has the VIP pre-amp. Plug it in and 'wow'.
It is an excellent guitar.
As an acoustic, it was 'tight' from the factory but opens up with play. Koa by its nature is more muted, mellow sound than spruce. However, I really enjoy it and have a Martin D25K2, 2006C, and 2009C. Question: how old are the strings? It may have the strings from 2006! New strings and a little playing could make a lot of difference. |

Location: Southern California | Thank you for the replies. I called today to get the serial and I'm going to call ovation to see what they say about it being NOS and if it has ever been in for repair. I also asked about a serial and the store said the serial isn't stamped on the guitar itself, they said it was inside on the label so it didn't say xxx of 500 or anything like that, it was #000XXX. X being the actual number. Does this sound right?
The gap at the neck does not go completely around the neck to bowl, it was more like the Lyrachord was a bit wavey, uneven so some parts of the body were flush with the neck and some spots had a bit of gap. My 70's era legend has a spot like this so maybe it's not that bad. I asked about the case and they said it doesn't have one, someone sold the case so it's not included. |

Location: SoCal | My 2006C does not have a serial number on the label; on the back of the headstock - all it has is 007 and below it is USA. |

Location: SoCal | Bottom line...it doesn't sound right. And, a 9158-0 case came with the guitar - selling a case that originally came with the guitar sounds like a Guitar Center 'typical'.
I would suggest going to the store and check it out or find another. Even if it is NOS, it may have some damage if it was on the floor. |

If the guitar does pan out, GC can certainly have a 9158 shipped in from another store. Don't settle for anything less.
I had a general tell me once...when you want something badly, sometimes that is exactly how you get it. Although it sounded like a poor Confucius translation, it actually makes sense. Good luck with your DD. |

Location: Southern California | Thanks guys. I think I am going to pass this one up since everything doesn't seem right with it and wait for something else to come along. I'm still interested in getting another "O" in the future so I'll just keep checking the sale section until the right one comes along. |

Location: GATLINBURG TENNESSEE :) | That sounds like wisdom to me. They already started to rip someone off when they they sold the case that comes standard with each new USA Ovation guitar. To advertise as NEW Old Stock and omit the case is bad business. You will find a LOT of great guitar deals here, and probaly end up with a lot more guitar for your money. If you are set on a new guitar, I'm sure there are many here(including myself)that would vouch for Al at Lost Art Vintage.(Link above) If you haven't already checked out the Ovation Tribute link also, you'll be able to see the MANY diffent models that have been made, and that sometimes become available here. Welcome to the club, and may you find it as rewarding as I have. |

Location: GATLINBURG TENNESSEE :) | OH MY... You may want to hurry over and check the for sale section under "OFC Slothead, 7/12"
Looks like someone is selling quite a few nice guitars there. If you're looking for a KOA guitar, the 2009 Koa Collector's is THE BEST! ...and that's a STEAL at his selling price!...and that '84 Collectors at $800? MMM-mmm-mmm!
Also looks like Tony is in your area! Could b your lucky day. |
