Location: Michigan | I have to admit that I am a hard core rock-n- roller but I still love to hear the Beach Boys music.
I dont think that they were great players but they sure had the vocals going on and Brian Wilson had the songwrighting talent.
The vocals back then( 60's )seemed to be in the spotlight of that era.The Beach Boys remind me of an early CSN&Y .How about all of those vocal groups back then, heres a few . GWB
The Association
The Mamas & the Papas
Sonny & Cher
P.S. !! WARNING !! The dancing by the one Beach Boy in this video is very painfull to watch so you have been warned::::

Mamas and Papas had a great sound. The Association was a bit too "vanilla" sounding to me. Sonny and Cher I have no real opinion of. |

The old "good memories" thing.
I own one of their CD's that I found at work, but I rarely play it...
they are not on my Windows Media Player.
Upon re-reading my post, I guess I can take them or leave them... In small doses. |

Location: Tennessee | Oh, yeah ... definitely. I know every word to every song. They were the local boys done good ... I grew up literally a couple of miles from where they lived ... played football against their high school (Be True To Your School and all that) and would occasionally see one of them moving about the area. My older sister knew Dennis fairly well. Being 10+ years younger than all of them, I also listened to a lot of their later music as it came out and have a great liking for a lot of their later stuff, such as Smiley Smile, Friends. 20/20, Sunflower, Surf's Up and so on. It's sort of like the Beatles ... totally "pop" and sugary stuff early on, to be replaced by deeper, sophisticated ground-breaking music.
What passes for the "Beach Boys" today is a joke and ruins it for me. They should have put a wrapper on it after Dennis went swimming for the last time. Dennis and Carl had already quit the band because they didn't want to be some nostalgia band and Brian was off in a different dimension. |

I wonder if the first 12 posts were by people in the under 50 year old range?
Anyone dated back then must of tapped their feet to the music or you must of been a ROCKER.
The Beach Boys carved out an incredible new sound known as SURF MUSIC.
Its was an era just as important as Blues,Jazz,Rock,Classical,ect.ect.ect.
It was great!!! GWB |

Saw them twice. Second time Brian was totally out of it. The rest of them were making comments about Brian, like, didn't he play great, let's hear it for Brian, etc. Didn't know about his problems until years later. Nonetheless, at least when I saw them, they were tight. Dennis was still alive and drumming.
Let me add ... a great date band ... the chicks always love the Beach Boys. |

I'd disagree with you on that one, GWB. Surf music to me was different and started way before the Beach Boys charted their first song - it was primarily instrumentals and the genre was defined by Dick Dale, the Chantays, the Challengers, the Surfaris, the Ventures and the like. The Beach Boys were straight Pop that sang a lot of songs about the beach. They would occasionally play a surf song like Moon Dawg, but stuff like Surfin' USA was Chuck Berry music and the early ballads weren't much more than the other four-part harmonies of the boy bands of the time. |

I may have been one of those, and I'm under 50 by a few years, but that doesn't really mean anything. It could have a bunch to do with my growing up though. I was definitely influenced by what Dad listened to. CCR, CSN (&Y), Neil Young, Melanie, more folksy stuff for sure. He HATED the Beach Boys.
Now the REAL surf stuff bobbo mentioned, heck I get a kick outta that. That surf style, rockabilly, country and bluegrass picking are the styles that are really interesting me currently. |

Location: North Carolina | I never understood why girls flocked to guys with guitars, and that's not why I took up the instrument. However, I have had (and occasionally still do have) the experience of a woman staring at me spellbound while I'm playing a song.
But once they talk to me and find I'm a truly boring guy, they move on. |

Location: Michigan | Stonebobbo you made me look up who Dick Dale is and I stand corrected hes a Surf Dude from the 50s.Under his website is a pretty interesting story about him & Leo Fender meeting and Leo giving him a stratocaster to play for the first time .Good stuff.
How about I correct myself by saying the Beach Boys became the top selling surf band and keep that music alive still today. The Ventures & The Safaris were more like the bands of today they run big a couple of years and then go away.
Someone please help me find the meaning or hidden message to the lyrics:
"LETS GO SURFIN NOW EVERYBODYS LEARNING HOW COME ON AND SAFARI WITH ME".
I have played this backwards forwards sideways and I cant make any relevence out out those lyrics  HELP PLEASE...GWB
P.S. OLD MAN ARTTTTHUR  sounds like you should start a poll up with the Simon & Garfunkle question. :D |

Location: Carle Place, NY | I'm with Stonebobbo on this one. The first time I heard Sloop John B on the radio I was hooked. I really got into the Beach Boys around 1971 when they were playing small venues. They really had a great live act back then. This was about the time that Brian Wilson was off the deep end emotionally and was not part of the group on tour. I must have seen them about ten times back then. Sadly, what is presented in concert as the Beach Boys for the past 15 years or so is total crap. |

Its like some type of the Monkey having an epileptic attack. That just couldn't of been cool even back then.GWB Nope - Bobbo Don't Dance. I always thought Mike Love was a Dork (with a capital D) and the last 20 years have just proven the point. But there were a lot of uncool girls and guys back then who thought Mikey was just dreamy. All the dudes and dudettes tended to gravitate towards Dennis and Carl. There is quite the story behind the acrimonious relationship between Mikey and Carl whilst trying to keep the band together during Brian's trip into la-la land. Both Carl and Dennis ended up quitting the group over the whole mess, even though Carl's work of filling Brian's shoes (Carl and the Passions, Holland, etc) was criticially acclaimed at the time. Mikey just wanted to be a feel good oldies band, and the rest of the group had much bigger dreams and visions. They tried a couple of reunions (blood is thicker than water) but nobody was into Mikey's moldy oldies show except for Bruce Johnston and - from time to time - John Stamos. I think the local BB tribute bands are better than what is performed by the "official" Beach Boys these days. |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Just for the record, the Ventures were not a flash group that thereafter disappeared following their success in the 60's. They remain arguably the most popular band of any sort ever in Japan, have sold over 110 million albums worldwide, and are considered the world's top instrumental group of all time. I could live with that on my resume. |
