We have a few tunes in the works.
A couple might become "A" songs.. a few might become fillers, some might not even get past the first run through.

Dream / Everly Bros. - On the suggestion of a good friend with impeccable credentials.
.
To Make You Feel My Love / B. Joel & others - Because Lady Slipkid really, really likes it.
.
Mr. Bojangles & Country Roads - Yes, they've been done to death and we might never play them out, but we like them.
.
Freedom / McCartney - Tho it was given a chance it will never see the light of day. It's all hook and no substance. I'm sure Temp would agree.
.
Bargain / The Who - Looks like it will be something less that an "A" song but more than a filler. It's something you never hear others cover and again, we like to play it.
.
I Saw Her Standing There / Beatles - A good harmony song and damn fun to play. A real vocal stretcher.
.
That Thing You Do / The Wonders - A 60's vibe that is right in our wheelhouse. Tho it's more complicated and busy than you might think.
.
So... What's in your wallet?
You might try one of the above yourself and I might want to take a run at something you're doing.

I played an open mic last night and this woman had a great song, I was backing her up. She said she'd send me the chart and words.
Something like, "Just cause it's over doesn't mean it's the end" or something like that.

We did "Jalapinos" by the Bellamys, but it needs some more work

Kill it kill it kill it..............
There are HUNDREDS of songs you guys can knock out of the park that are better than those two.

Think Peter & Gordon, The Hollies, Dave Clark 5, Stones.........

My mates and I were just practicing this one last night for an upcoming March gig. Works well in a 3 piece acoustic setting -- nice and punchy. Just glad I don't have to do the singing!

mbedard... March is a long way off but if you remember, I'd like to know how Bargain went over for you.
.
Sorry T... We're going to play Country Roads and BoJangles at the next open mic we do and they're stayin' on the list. Fear not tho... chances are you'll never have to suffer through them. Same reason you'll never hear Wild Horses or Hallelujah. They're not the type to play at a TUS gathering.
.
We play Bus Stop and Look Through Any Window once in a while in practice. We've just never polished them up enough to play out.
.
We took a run at Carrie-Ann a long time ago. The hook is fun enough but the lyrics are kinda clunky.

"That Thing You Do" is a great tune written by the Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne. He was asked to write a tune that had that 60's vibe and period lyrics for the movie and, for a guy who wasn't even born back then, he absolutely nailed it.

Oh and I'm working on a couple of Jackson Browne numbers. Not the huge hits, more the second tier stuff.

I suppose the nice thing about never playing out is I don't have to worry about what the audiance might think, because my audiance is just me.
I'm currently working on the lead for As the Raven Flies, by Dan Fogelberg. Joe Walsh did the lead and fits the Am Pentatonic stuff I'm trying to learn.

I've found lots of "tabs" of the chords, but never found one for the lead part. A couple weeks ago, I woke up around 3, which is typical, with the Raven stuck in my head, complete with the lead part. I don't know that I had listened to the song in months or years. I had been working on blues licks in Am for weeks and this one just fit.
My brain went from that lead part to the lead in Sultans of Swing and then Hotel California, but those aren't in Am.

Run into this all the time. Speaking of which, if anyone has tab for the acoustic intro bit to Joe Bonamassa's version of "As the Crow Flies" please send it along. Sounds easy, but I can't for the life of me get it down.

I like about anything by Steve Earle, Jackson Browne, Little Feat or, for that matter, Muddy Waters. I will never ever play "Stay Here and Drink" by Merle Haggard again. I was in a band for 10 years and everytime we played, which was every weekend or so, we opened with that song. Love Merle. Hate that song now.

How true!
As I'm trying memorize this I realize that it has about every 60's cliche you can think of.
Major to Minor Chord changes, an extra litte bridge like Pretty Women, a place for a scream, and a very Beatle like last chord. And I'm sure there are more.
Then, a few layers down, there's some thought provoking sexual innuendo.... Just what is that thing she does???

Brad, I've been doing that tune for a couple of years now, just solo guitar (key of A, capo'd at the 2nd fret -- E is just way too high!), and that video gave me a few things to think about and incorporate.

People like that tune. Everybody recognizes it and when you do it and watch the people listening, you can see them bobbing their heads and singling along. You and Brian could really do it justice....

Well... you know how you hit a nail a little sideways and it kinda bends over? Then you tap it back sideways to get it straight but it's now weaker and it just bends again?
Yeah... I nailed it.

I take a run at it about once a week. It's my first venture into altered tuning land. I'll get it ... sooner or later.

Yeah... I like that one to.
Wait till you hear it in Temp's DADGAD tuning or Cliff's weird "I don't know what the hell he's doing tuning.
Overkill in DADGAD sounds complicated and artsy-fartsy but it's so easy to play.

I don't want to start sounding like the new Andy Rooney but...
Have you ever noticed how difficult it can be to learn lyrics when all the rhymes end with... "shun"?

I've been working on "Hills of Morning" for years. Harder than I thought, but Cockburn's stuff usually is.
Right now I'm trying to come up with an acceptable solo guitar arrangement for "Fountain of Sorrow".

Speaking of Cockburn, I tried playing "Pacing The Cage", but even though I can play and sing it, I just can't make it interesting, so I gave it up.
Seems to me that "Fountain of Sorrow" is all about the lyrics. I don't think the melody is all that outstanding to make a great solo guitar piece, jmho.

Sorry, didn't mean as a "solo guitar piece", but as a song accompanied on solo guitar. There's a lot of musical nuance in it that while easily expressed on a piano, is not so easy on a guitar. At least not for me. So the accompaniment comes across as boring and drags down the whole song.

In every example I've seen "That Thing You Do" is played in starting in E. But to get any vocal leverage I have to start it with a C (the peoples chord).
.
That makes 4 songs that could use a longneck.
Let's see... a minimum of $600... divided by 4 songs... times frequency played.... nope... the math still doesn't work out.

Brad....you are looking at a longneck the wrong way.

With a capo, the longneck can play EVERYTHING you currently play in the same key as before...PLUS you can play all those songs that are just a hair out of your comfortable singing range.

And because of it's brilliant design and sound, it sounds so much bigger and fuller than a guitar in standard tuning...and I have found this big and full sound to translate even to sounds that are capo'ed up to standard E and above.

Like I have said before, locally I use the Longnecks for all my open mics and then capo up when/if required/desired!

yeah but... GAS tends to trump logic and reason. OK maybe not funding math... although there's always MasterCard!

Tho we both like the chord changes, That Thing You Do is out... for now. It just didn't click.

Too bad about That Thing You Do. I ended up learning it in Bb, with a capo at the 3rd fret. Makes it real easy for solo guitar to approximate the short solo...
