And 'Knocking on Heavens Door'.
I know Cliff won't play Freebird. |

It's alway "that" song that must be played at a jam. Everyone knows the chords but when the vocal "And... and ... aaaand" comes around it just flies off the rails.
.
We avoided Wild Horses for a long time but have grown to like it.
.
As much as I love The Who, I just can't play Behind Blue Eyes.
.
Any song that rhymes "Fine" with "Wine". |

Really...why is that?
I have rarely if ever heard it played live by anybody other than Daltrey or The Who.
When I played it at my gig a couple weeks ago it went over really well. |

But stuff I really like is really off topic. |

| Stuff you refuse to play - ever!
Pretty much a non-issue because I only ever play stuff that I think is worth saying - got no innarest in playing dumbass crap just for the sake of it, or because people like it or because everyone knows the chords and it's a good sing along at the local knees-up or because it was a top 10 POS back in someone's day. |

Seems like it's been done to death around here. Maybe it's a midwest thing. I'd rather work on Bargain, Goin' Mobile, or Pure & Easy.
.
For the most part Brian & I enjoy the more obscure but recognizable songs. Plenty of those out there.
.
Just thought of a name for our duo... Brian & Brad... The B-sides.
(b-side... snicker... reminds of a GREAT joke.) |

As Miles says, if somebody else is paying, I'll play whatever they want. Call me a whore. |

I play Freebird, and Knockin', and Behind Blue Eyes, and I play Cat's in the Cradle...
(all my own personal interpretations of those songs)
I do a finger-picked version of House of the Rising Sun that many seem to like.
(I'm sure House is on a few people's No Play list)
I'm not a virtuoso and I play what I have learnt.
If there is something that I don't like, I would not have taken the time to learn it.
I mean... I know Sunshine of your Love and Smoke on the Water but I don't play them. |

There are some opportunites to "own" one of those overdone, over played, over cooked tunes by playing it differently. I enjoy the Chris Cornell version of "Billy Jean".
Hayseed Dixie does a fine job with AC/DC covers.
But the risks are high... |

I refuse to play Yesterday, but I've got my own reasons for that. |

And it's precisley those reasons that the ones we do well come out that way, isn't it?
I would say it's also the exact reason the ones we DON'T want to do come out so horribly. |

Now I'm starting to feel the same way about Gov't Mule, his latest obsession... |

I've seen bobbo play this.
When you first hear this your first thought, like mine, will be ..."Oooo gotta stop and watch... there's a train wreck a-comin'!"
Next thing I know I'm sucked in, singing along and wondering if I'll ever be able to turn a song on it's ear and make it work like that.
And here I thought I had made some brave song choices in my time.
I was gobsmacked. |

Or at least I could last time I tried.
And for a hundred bucks I would try again. |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | Ok.. from the "I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes" category..
In the Early 90's a friend of mine and drummer in my band was a DJ at a club in DC (and VA) called Deja Du. Huge venue, several rooms, capacity probably near or over 1000 easily and on weekends there was a line around the block.
It wasn't just a "dance" club as that was actually just a small part of the establishment, but rather than live music, they had a DJ who needed to be prepared for everything. This was DC afterall where there might be a large group of seniors coming from their ballroom lessons to 20-somethings out barhopping.
So I'm hanging with Rob at the DJ booth and the crowd was hopping, dance floor full. Rob had a nack for playing the tunes to get the dance floor full, winding them up, than changing things so that group would want to leave the floor and go drink while the next demographic got in there. Being a drummer I think helped and he was a walking encyclopedia of music.
Ok.. It's a Saturday night, packed house, about 11:00pm, so here comes this older guy and he asks Rob to play some old Sinatra era tune (although the name eludes me at the moment) and Rob just kinda points to the dance floor and tells him it's gonna be awhile. The guy sais it's his girlfriends favorite is there anything he can do. Rob sais, hey, I'll work it in, but it will be about 30 minutes at least. The guy reaches into his wallet and Rob whispers to me "Whatcha think, a $5 or a $10 or a $20?" Well I didn't see the bill right away, but as soon as the guy handed it to Rob, he got out an album that I couldn't see from where I was standing, then he made a very dramatic move with his pointer finger directly onto the currently spinning record stopping it while placing the other record on the empty turntable and announced, this next song goes out to whatever-her-name was and played the guys request. Then Rob turned to me and showed me the $100 dollar bill he was handed. |

there are a lot of songs I'd never do, but when you're up there playing with Davis and he says, "We're doing this one", you do it |

These were the obligatory, gotta play songs back in the 70's when I played in bands. I played them so many times I don't even want to hear them again.
Unless I can find a way to make these songs completely different.
It's kind of funny though, I played a few other songs to death but still have fun playing them:
Rocky Mountain Way
Funk 49
Rock and Roll Hoochie Coo
Badge
Go figure... |
