Location: big island | when i was directing art galleries, i sold many of frederick hart's acrylic (lucite) sculptures. the medium allows light to pass through it and this is the effect that occurs. this only works on the reverse or concave side of the sculpture. hart was the first to utilize this medium and now there are several sculptors "sculpting with light". frederick hart, by the way, sculpted several of the pieces at the washington national cathedral as well as the "three soldiers" monument in bronze, also in DC. his sculpture, titled "ex nihilo" (out of nothing) is about the creation of man. the producers of al pacino's movie, "devil's advocate" used a version of that as the backdrop on satan's office wall. in the movie, the wall swirls and comes to evil life. there was a major lawsuit and when the videos of the flick were released, they came with disclaimer stickers affixed regarding hart's work. |
