JUST BOUGHT THIS UNIT . SUPPOSED TO BE A 1987 ANNEVERSARY EDITION BUT OVATION'S SITE SAYS IT WAS MADE IN 1981 . I FIND THAT STRANGE. THEY OFFER NO FURTHER EXPLANATION. I PREVIOUSLY OWNED A 1976 LEGEND 1117. I HAD IT FOR 13 YRS., AND LET MY WIFE TALK ME INTO TRADING IT IN. THEN I TOLD MYSELF IF I EVER FOUND ANOTHER ONE LIKE IT I WOULD BUY IT. CAN ANYONE GIVE ME MORE INFO?

Hi Den,
I think the anniversary was in/for 1977 (10 years). But model 1657 was not built unto 1978 through 1982 (approximately). You could go to the reference section on left, and then into the price list, then scroll down to your model # to find out which years it was actually made.
As I've come to find out, Ovation was/is more focused on making guitars, then keeping records. Sometimes it's frustrating, but the guitars are worth it.
Maybe a search here on your model 1657 will give you some more info. But I think the 1657 is a fancy legend. Deep bowl, 24 year old wood top, I bet yours sounds nice. hope this helps a little, peace mike

I have a 1657 dated to 1978. Fugot is right in that the Anniversary is essentially a custom legend. The carved truss rod and bridge are the same but the main difference is that the custom legend has the more common diamond inlays. The Anniversary has cross-shaped abalone inlays which I believe make it absolutely stunning. They both have the A-bracing which in my view is superior to the VT-8 or the Ovation-X. I believe that is why mine, approaching 30 yrs old, doesn't have even a hint of surface cracks at the bridge; a common problem in Ovations of that vintage.

Hi bro, nice to see you finally made your way here!
The unique snowflake inlays and herringbone binding on the 1657 are similar to what is featured on some Martin guitars.
There is a nice 1657 on Fleabay right now.
