Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | I have been back and forth to the Specialists and Doctors about my neck this week (but more on that later). Yesterday just after noon, Brown rang the doorbell and delivered two guitar cartons. Although in a lot of pain, I opened them; checked them out (more on that later too), and put them in the cases until last night late when I was in some relief. Tonight, I was able to enjoy an awesome evening sunset and with the help of SWMBO, I set up the guitars for some nice pictures. I will take detail pic's later during the day but these will do for now and speak for themselves. Jerome will have the detailed pic's on his site soon. I'm just going to post the photo's for now and I'll give my thoughts when I am feeling better.

These two new additions are so nice: the 1688-7 needed a good cleaning which it got along with a new set of Elixir's...what an awesome sounding guitar...as good or better than my other 1688...and to have a matched set with my 1687-7 is so great...
The 1537 is near mint/excellent...and I finally see what everyone is talking about with these: my '87C is killa but this is one of the best sounding Ovation's I have ever heard...and to be so clean is a tribute to whomever owned it in the past. It does have a Mothership repaired crack from the fretboard to the bridge under the strings, but it is almost invisable. It play's and looks like the dream that it is.
I played both guitars stereo through the Shen. 60 and both were beautiful sounding and really responsive: both sounded equally fine in mono.
BYW: I can't say enough about the GB Shen. Stereo 60 amp...a must have for so many reasons.
I hope to get better pic's this weekend or next week...if I can put them down long enough!
Several have asked about my neck injury: I am getting another referral/second opinion in the Roanoke area in the next two weeks...the last procedure in Tennessee was not completed due to complications during the prodedure in the ER. Just what I needed...more pain...lol

Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | Dweezil: Next time you change the strings you might take a damp (not wet) hot washcloth and go over the fret board; that will loosen most if not all of any crud and oil from fingers. It may not get it all the first time so you might want to do that several times...ALWAYS follow with a dry cloth to remove any moisture...follow by using some fingerboard conditioner and again wipe dry...if anything will, that should take care of it.
I agree, the 1537 is very nearly mint: the nearly invisible top crack was probably caused by low moisture in the top (humidifiers, humidifiers, humidifiers!) but was fixed expertly by the folks at the mothership! It is a gem, no doubt! |

Your current collection has been significantly expanded upon over the past year. You have some real beauties! Got a favorite? I get asked that all the time, and my answer is usally whatever I've latched onto during the past month or so. What I prefer to play out with is not typically the rarest or most valuable model. Is that the same for you? |

I wouldn't use anything 'heavier'.
BTW, I've had almost no issues with lemon oil 'dressed' 0000 steel wool. YMMV... |

Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | Hey Brad: yes, I have been fortunate to find some great guitars. I must say that the collection is at a standstill for a while: The economy is fast taking care of any extra funds we may have as it is with most everyone else. Also, the cases are taking over the house: and I can't add on an instrument/music room any time soon.
Favorites: well, I am down to only two electrics: the Les Paul Custom and my EJ Strat. Both are fantastic electrics and each is different as you know. Acoustic (and over all), I would have to say the '48 D-28 Martin is at the top of the list: what a find and what a piece of history. It is also the most valuable: great sound and mojo! It is as lite as a feather and plays effortlessly. It also allowed me to meet and become friends with Wayne Henderson. His musicianship and his talent for building guitars are simply incredible.
The Adamas I's are such a great set to play live with as is the -6P Ovation Elite set. My Sunday player is the Taylor 810 Fall Limited W/the Expression system. It sounds great through the church sound system and also plays so nicely (and is the favorite of the congregations HOWEVER they do love the 12 strings O’s and A’s.
The great thing about having a collection and playing out at the same time is that I get to choose different "tools" for each performance: Last Christmas I used the '47 RI and the 1688-5 and I used them acoustically: no one had a problem hearing the sound in the sanctuary that night from those cannons!
The '47 RI is a true keeper: I have been offered a lot of money for it and it is not for sale. It has the best sound acoustically of any 6 string Ovation/Adamas and nearly beats out everything else as well. I am drawn to the vintage guitars and while I do appreciate the newer models, I find pleasure in playing and admiring a near mint 30 year old O or A...The 60 year old D-28 is in a class by itself. The OM-28V is also a very fine guitar...many flavors and too little time.
I have been fortunate in also meeting friends across the world as a result of this forum...in all levels of ability and whether one guitar or 30, we all share something great: the love of the guitar and music and camaraderie! In my opinion, that’s priceless! |

It's made by 3M: you can do a web search for dealers and distributors.
I like the gray: it polishes the frets too: I've used it with fingerboard oil with great results for over 15 years. |

Man, you just jolted the hell out of me! I bet I've suggested lemon oil at least three or fours times here. That's what I used on my first two gits but ever since have used mineral oil.
Day-um, I must be coming down with CRS! My bad... 
My apologies to those that took me at my word. Lemon oil will not harm the fretboard, but mineral oil is the recommended and preferred application. |

Some guitar stores sell a brand (pick one) of Fretboard oil or Fretboard conditioner: these work well and are basicilly mineral oil: you'll pay more for these..
As far as what brand the factory uses, I have no idea...Stewart Macdonald (StewMac.com) has (or used to have) some at a fair price.

Location: Boise, Idaho | dweezil, you have to get past this. If the factory thought that a particular brand of mineral oil was important, someone would have told us to use a certain brand. Kaman probably would have distributed it under its brand and sold it to us or worked out some deal where they made money by recommending a particular brand. Mineral oil must be pretty generic. |

You can get a pint of 100% mineral oil (sold as an intestinal lubricant) for super-cheap. Like $2. This is what Kim Keller recommended at his "Care and Feeding" seminar at the factory tour last year. |

A search for mineral oil throws up 1000s of different types etc.
Now some are still adamant that lemon oil is good enuff others say NO.
I really wish someone from Ovation will clearly state what is the stuff to use and preferably not just say mineral oil, WHAT mineral oil, there are 1000s of minerals. I'm confused... |
