Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | Well, I ran across this photo in my old Bass players gallery on mySpace. It's from the early 90's. Just thought I would share.
Although it is a hoot, and this was not one of our more stellar gigs, there are a couple of things that brought back fond memories.
This is one of the only pictures I can find of my trusty Viper ver2.0 with the Kahler bridge and Carvin pickups. Note the wood pickguard. Sorry MWoody, but you weren't the first. I made that PG in the 80's. When I installed the Kahler, I broke the original, and just used a piece of paneling. It looked good as long as you didn't get too close.
This is also the only picture I know of, of my amp setup that I used for many years. It's two Roland Bolt 60's both set on their "clean" channel, with each leg of the stereo out of a Rockman X-100 going to each. Those are still my favorite amps, although they remind me of my Guzzi bikes. They may not be pretty, and you may have to kick'em and shake'em to get them to work, but they run great once fired up, and never left me stranded.
I also see my trusty pearl color BC Rich Bich. It was an NJ Series, but it rocked. It's too bad the shot doesn't show a little more off to the right, as I'm sure my trusty Ovation Medallion Acoustic was on its stand off to my left.
And just in case you are wondering... those boxes just next to Lee's right leg on the stage... You guessed it. We never went on without plenty of "stage presence" :) Get it.. "stage"... "presents"... Hey, it was the 90's!!! Lee was going through his Angus Young meets Richard Simmons phase I guess too.
Oh... and for those of you who looked at that picture and the coffee just spewed out on your computer... I apologize... but.. I did the same thing when I first ran across it!!!

Bought it new at Guitar Center in Oakland, CA (back when they only had a few stores). Worked all summer to save the $.
Miles, I was just reading that Billy Gibbons used a Rockman setup for a bunch of the Eliminator stuff. |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | You'd be surprised, or maybe not, how many people used Rockman gear in the 80's and 90's, at least in the studio. They stuff was designed to be able to be used recording direct, but not to "sound" like it was recorded direct. And it does that very well.
Another thing that isn't widely known is that they were designed to be used with FULL RANGE speakers, NOT guitar speakers. My 500 amp, (not the stuff in the picture) actually has a switch for "FULL RANGE" or "Guitar" speakers.
So.... I gots ta think'n... What any Acoustic guitar that's being amplified needs is FULL RANGE. I got to thinking why the Bose L1 system sounds so good. It's a full range system that can handle the dynamics of a guitar. So, with that in mind, I hooked up my Adamas to my Rockman XPR and the 500 amp, into my Genz Benz cabinet which has EV Full Range speakers.
WOW!!!!! I set the XPR completely FLAT, with no effects. Basically just using it as a pre-amp. After playing for awhile, I decided to add reverb and kick the compressor in a little, along with the "auto clean" function. Amazing, simply amazing. I don't know why I never thought of this before. The sound is on par with the Bose L1, maybe a little better. The Bose has the dispersion factor, so it would win an overall shootout, but for sheer sound quality. The Rockman Modular amp is now what I will use to amplify an Ovation acoustic.
It had that one quality that was discussed in another thread that many amps, like the SWR's, don't have. The amplified sound, sounded just like the guitar, only louder. |

Far out pics you guys! I think this is one of the biggest reasons I have been drawn to Ovations. Memories of some of the absolute best times of my life with some of the absolute best brothers I’ve ever known. Sometimes still today I miss those people and those times terribly. :(
Pic is first band in 1975. That's me stage right. The Les Paul is fake but the Vox double stack and the RCA ribbon mic are real. As are the friends.
And dig the sequins!
So why am I drawn to Ovations? I have never owned an Ovation until this year and never played with guys that had ‘em. In fact, never even had much interest in acoustic guitars at all back in the day (I mean look at me in the later pics in my gallery - Damon check out the "V") and I was really a singer anyway. But I always secretly admired the Elites in the magazines and music stores. Thinking outside the box (acoustic pun intended) is undeniably my style and those Elites were definite evidence that someone was doing just that. The "space age" materials and the rebellious sound holes left an indelible impression on me, I guess. If only I had known how they sounded back then… Nah!!! Idiot singer probably would have run them through a Big Muff anyway. :rolleyes:
It’s been some time since I’ve blown up a stage or jumped off a PA stack but Ovations are such icons of the times when I did, that now somehow they feel like old friends that I just never took the time to get to know back then. And now is a good time for old friends. The voice isn’t what it used to be so it’s time to learn to play.
