Location: closely held secret | Our family is going to Uganda again next January (another missions trip), and I'm looking for a used O to take with. Perhaps a Balladeer, if it has a p/u.
I need to keep the cost at around $250 or $300.
If anyone has one they're looking to move, please let me know.
Thanks! |

Location: closely held secret | Thanks, Steve. I kinda need a pickup, because we'll be traveling to different churches and working with their worship musicians. They play loud.
Last time we went I bought an inexpensive Celeb on sale, but I left it with someone there. (You wouldn't believe how rare Ovations are in central Africa!)
This time I want to take a better quality guitar, but I plan to bring it back with me. Unless God has other plans for it, that is... |

I'll keep the Ultra in mind - my first O was an Ultra! |

OP30, no case (I have several...)
... Or the S771 Balladeer. |

Location: closely held secret | I agree, Bill. Unfortunately, that's sometimes not revealed to us.
My plan last time we went (last year) was to buy a Celeb (extorted it out of GC for cost) and leave it with a missionary from our church who was living there. This is what I did and felt very right about it.
This time I plan to bring it back with me to use both for future trips and just as a campfire guitar - unless God shows me an alternative plan... |

I can't afford to spend that much on a guitar that's going to be stuffed in a British Air cargo hold for 24 hours and may or may not show up in Entebbe.
That's why I'm looking for an older Balladeer - lower cost, decent quality. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | I have just what you're looking for, but I just got it and I'm not willing to part with it. I only paid $225 for it, but got burned for $70 in shipping because I had my father-in-law handle the transaction. I've well documented my fights with my wife over guitars. I enlisted the aid of her dad, but she really complained when we got the $70 bill for shipping it. I should have thought about selling it to you when Stephen's 1537 was for sale. I could have come up with $500 and she wouldn't even noticed the difference between a Deluxe Balladeer and the 1537.
I'm not sure you'd want the shallow bowl, though. Mine really projects, but the strings seem very heavy and it takes a lot more work with the left hand, especially on barre chords. I'm assuming that when I go to lighter strings it will lose a lot of volume unplugged. If you don't find anything, let me know. I'm sure my wife won't mind if I let you borrow it. Check the pics on dcrunner's site, or it might still be in Paul Blanchard's. Nebraska to Iowa to Idaho. |

I have 2 shallow bowls, 1866 and 67. Not as room-filling as my 6778LX, but still fun to play, and great plugged in.
Besides, I'm taking it to Uganda. I love the people there, but they're easy to impress, guitar-wise. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | I'm not bitter. I just whine a lot and it's hard to tell the difference in print. Sounds like you have a couple choices already. I'll keep my Balladeer then. I did have a mid bowl Celebrity Deluxe that looked and sounded very good. Had a big finish crack, so I traded it for my Collector's. The Balladeer is my first solid spruce. That may also explain the seemingly big sound, but I still think it's the strings. I don't need the volume and my fingers are getting sore, so I'll get a set of lights next time I'm in the guitar store and see. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | By choices, I was referring to your Legend. If my memory is correct, it is similar to my Balladeer except for the 5 piece neck. If you don't want to take that, I'm sure you will be able to find a Balladeer in the price range. I got mine off this board when I wasn't really looking and I was surprised no one else expressed interest or I would have let them have it and avoided the hassle with my wife. (I bought the Classic and Balladeer on the same day, so she was a bit shocked.)
There's an ebay O where the guy wants $75 for shipping and handling and explains why. For $70, mine was packed so well that it could have been run over with a truck without damage. The biggest problem was that it took me almost an hour to unpack so I could start playing it. Keep looking. |

First, it's a long trip on several planes (picturing apes on steroids chucking luggage in and out of loading doors).
Second, there's nothing like getting off an air-conditioned jet in Entebbe and walking into a wall of equatorial humidity. I could almost hear the Celeb I took last time swelling inside the case.
That was after I got over the sheer amazement of it actually showing up at the airport at all. "Ooo look an American guitar! And it's an Ovation!" "Ah, forget it - it's a Korean Celebrity. Let it go - maybe next time he'll bring an expensive one..."
I think I'd rather take something I won't have to cry about. Maybe an MOB? That would give the nationals something to talk about! Anyone willing to donate one? |

Location: Boise, Idaho | That's what I figured. I'd feel the same about my Balladeer, although I only paid $225 for it and it has a couple small finish cracks. I assumed the laminated tops would be more resistant to finish cracks, but my Celebrity Deluxe had one the length of the body. There are quite a few decent O's on ebay that go for low prices because of finish cracks. Maybe that's where you'll end up. |

Location: closely held secret | Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. Just a knock-around guitar, doesn't have to be beautiful. Just missed that s771 on the bay, but didn't want to go $300 for it. He's going to relist it, maybe he'll start a little lower. He didn't get any bids on it. |

1615-1 I'm thinking 1115. From the description, the pickup in it was added, and I don't see any knob above the neck.
Hmmm. Electronic upgrade potential?
Never mind, just re-read the description. The cracks are through the wood. |

A 1615 is a good candidate to take with you Waskel! Outstanding sound. It would definately be covered in finish cracks so try to pick one up in the $250 range and have Mother refinish the top upon your return. |

Surely the guitar you want is a resonator - the all steel variety. Think Mark Knopfler "Romeo and Juliet." They double up as weapons when the lions get hungry..... |

Speaking of which:
I just saw Mr. K. perform for the first time last week. F@cking BRILLIANT!! The notes just seem to effortlessly DRIP from the guy! His voice got a bit lost in the wash of drums and dual keyboardists on some of the louder numbers (he never had an overtly "dynamic" voice to begin with), but when they pared-down to just a small trap kit and some acoustics, it was GREAT!! The National featured prominantly in the "acoustic" stuff . . . especially "R&J" . . . |

| Like all great guitar players he plays with his fingers, not a pick..........
Vocally he reminds me of Dylan - neither of 'em can sing worth a sh**, but they write perfect songs for their own voices and the results are brilliant.
Glad you enjoyed it. |

If you want a Pacemaker with finish cracks, there's one in a pawn shop in Lewiston Idaho. I think it was around $100. I could probably track it down for you if you are interested. I saw it in the window and rushed in, but put it back down when I saw about 4 finish cracks from the bridge to the base. |

Use it and give it a resurrection when you return.
This would give you a fantastic new guitar that shouldn't crack, will have a reset neck and has a history about it.
I would also suggest you use the Elixers. |

I'm not particularly looking for a Pacemaker, a 6 string would probably be easier to deal with in the conditions there. I just thought it might be a good deal for the money, but the top cracks scared me off.
Keep up the suggestions, everything help. I'll keep looking. |

| Waskel hasn't pulled the trigger yet and there's a lot of nice pickin's out there right now. I'd Love to get that CL Acoustic cracks and all but just not feasible financially right now.
I just wanted to get him a nice/durable guitar for the mission.. plus the ability to plug in, and no worrys about either leaving it, losing it, or having it misappropriated at the airport.
Thought this one fit the bill pretty nicely.. and if he left it with someone there would hold up to some heavy (tho unintentional) abuse and love.
God Bless,
Glenn |
