| You got it. I've owned/own both. Couldn't tell the difference in sound on a direct A/B, blindfolded & sitting in front while someone else played them in turn.
It's been said by knowledgeable people here on a prior thread that top grading is more often than not cosmetic rather than tonal. Sometimes a tonally superior top will be downgraded because of some minor cosmetic flaw, so don't fall into the "must have highest graded" trap.
Caveat: "same beast" only applies to those made in the same time frame - i.e. those with TRCs. |

Good info. We may get this worked out on the kid's guitar yet.
I'm going to see if they'll send me a 1617 with in good great shape for the $ I've already spent on the cracked 1619. |

Location: Carle Place, NY | Not so fast Damon. ALL 1619's have A bracing in the top, but not all of the 1617's particularly those with truss rods. Some do, some don't. All 1617's with the Kaman bar have A bracing, however many of the older truss rod ones have a different bracing, VT, which many folks here don't like. The A bracing is superior to the VT for acoustic tone. |

Any way to tell from pictures or a serial number? I thin this is a later one. '79 maybe. |

Location: Carle Place, NY | The serial number won't help identify the bracing. The only realy way is to actually look inside the guitar. A bracing is unique in appearance and if you know what it looks like you can see it just by looking inside the soundhole. Most notable are the two longitudinal braces that parallel to the grain and have a "kink" or bend right at the soundhole. The bend is reinforced with a small metal strip, about 1/4" by 1 /12" which is glued to thunderside of the braces. You can look in the soundhole and see these reiforcing strips. Sometimes the bracing is visible thru the top, but that's mostly on sunburst ones. |

The re-inforcements are at the bottom corners of the square that surrounds the soundhole. |

It doesn't look like they want to sell me the Legend now. THey just sent this note.
"Today I was checking out the case that comes with the other ovation and it really reeks of smoke and there were a few other small issues with the frets on the guitar, At this point I am going to recomend that we just refund your money on the first guitar. I am very sorry for everything, I just don't want to send you a guitar that isn't 100% perfect. I wish the best in your search for the right guitar for your son." |

| Hey Damon - Fuzzyman still has his 1617 up in the For Sale section if the MGR one doesn't work out. |

Location: Jet City | Fuzzy and I have been talking. To give an update, there is a 1617-1 on it's way for Zach. I'm talking to Fuzzy about his -4 though. I like the natural look. Besides, we can be a LEGENDary father and son team if we have 2. |
