Hi all,

I need some help with a price. I've decided to sell my 1990 Ovation Elite 1758 12 string. I treat my guitars well, and it's in mint condition... not one ding anywhere. The neck is also perfect, and the action is wonderful. Easiest 12-string i've ever played. It sounds like a grand piano. I thought i would use it more, especially for wedding gigs, but i get lazy and just take the 6 string. It needs to get outta the case and sing for someone who'll enjoy it!

I've looked at ebay for price ideas, but haven't seen one of these... I was thinking about $800. Am I close?
Thanks a lot for any advice..
Susan

If it's in as good of shape as you say it is, you could very well get that price. It's hard to say without pictures. You should post some pics here and you may be able to sell it without paying ebay.

Good luck.

Thanks, Vince.

I'll try to get the pictures up this weekend.

Darnit, now that i have it out of the case ( first time in a long time), i'm getting attached to it again, LOL. Even with cruddy strings, it plays so easily and sounds so good. Maybe i'll use it at church this Sunday.. just one more time

i do not need this guitar.
i will sell this guitar.

That's what they ALL say. :-)

You should keep it.

Good music shouldn't suffer merely for the sake of "convenience"

Susan, I almost made the same mistake of selling my Elite 6-string. I ended up changing my mind and had the factory give it a makeover. I'll never consider selling it again.

My suggestion ... Keep it for a while longer, then if you decide you REALLY need to sell it, SELL IT TO ME! (:

Susan, you need a 12 string in your arsenal, even if it's not played every day. Keep the guitar. You'd be hard pressed to find a better 12.....

Of course you could off-load one of the lesser guitars in your arsenal...you know...names that start with "M" or "G"...lot of duplication there, and that would help you to remain sonically diversified.

(just kidding...I am not a brand snob, just envious of your collection).

oh geez... ya'll aren't being very helpful about this!

you won't change my mind though... i've been thinking about doing this for the last 2 or 3 years, as the guitar sleeps in it's case. it needs to get out and play with someone!

i'm going to use the money to buy my son his first nice guitar. He's been learning on an old hunk of junk (just like i did), but now it's time for something better for him. Actually, the '95 martin is the same age as he is, and someday it will be his if he wants it... but right now he needs a 3/4 size guitar.

so no more guilt trips, or i'll have to get

Actually... now that i think about it, ALL of them will be his someday, LOL.

But the 95 martin was bought with him in mind right from the get-go.

I pulled my Martin out this past weekend for a song in church and was amazed at the sound. It's been a very long time since I pluked the 12 strings. I'm gonna keep it on a stand for a while. Reminded me of a song by Paul Stookey called Sebastian...."He spoke only when spoken to and sometimes alone in his bed". It's about his 12 string guitar.

Susan, Let us know when it goes on the selling block. If you do Ebay please give us a heads-up. I'm still trying to get rid of a couple lower-quality guitars to raise money for a deep bowl 12. And by the way ... I wish I would have had a mom like you when I was growin' up. You've got a lucky boy there.

I would assume $800 was her asking price.

Hi all,

Sorry for my absence. This past week our 8 year old neighbor ( and my son's good buddy), died suddenly and unexpectedly of an undiagnosed brain tumor. One minute he was here and the next he was gone. Those of you who play in church, please lift a word or two for this child's parents, and our neighborhood that is trying to help them cope with this nightmare. Those of you with kids... hug them close. And excuse me for getting off-topic.

As for the 12 string... my attentions have been elsewhere of course, so it will be later in the week before i have some pictures and decide what to do. I'd love to simply give it to a good home, but of course i need money just like everyone else, and I will probably put it on ebay with a reserve of $800.

all the best,
Susan

Susan - So sorry to hear about the loss. Hate when that happens. Breaks my heart when the little ones go. That stuff can really shake your faith. Rest assured a prayer will be said here tonight for the family and your son who is sure to be looking to you for an answer. Hold him tight.

God bless.

Dear Susan~ Your loss is ours as well...I lead worship (along with my two sons, 17 & 14) and will make a point to lift y'all up in prayer...

Focus on what matters most - and never mind the guitar...it will find it's new adoption in good time.

May His grace & peace be yours~ Kurt

Regarding my previous post, which I believe will immediately preceed this one...

I only read the first couple of posts on this subject, and did not until jus now read the one's regarding the loss of your neighbor's child. The opening line of my previous post was unintentionally apt, but not for a reason I would wish for.

I don't remember who posted it, but he or she was right... the guitar issue can wait. You've got bigger things on your plate at the moment.

Take care, and God Bless you and your neighbors.

Hi all :)

First... thanks so much for the kind thoughts and prayers. There is a long road still ahead.

As for the Elite 12-string. I will put it on Ebay beginning Tuesday evening. It will have a reserve price of $800, and i'll let the market value be decided by the bidders. It's an awesome machine.
In going over it very closely, i did find a little scratch on the lower part of the front of the peghead, under the low-e strings... no doubt put there by a string end, when changing strings. It's very minor and i had a devil of a time getting a photo of it, but i just want to be 110% honest about any blemishes. There is also a place on the face of the guitar, upper bout area on the right when you're facing the guitar. About the size of a pencil lead. I honestly can't figure out if it's a ding, or a flaw in the clear finish. The only way to find it is to get the light reflecting on it just right, and then there is a slight imperfection in the finish... not rough... very smooth, but makes the light distort as it moves over it. The wood beneath is not affected. I could NOT get a photo to show it, but i tried.

The strings are deplorable!

AND... i found something extra to go with it. :p :p :p I used to do some leather work, and when i got the guitar, I made a matching leather guitar strap for it. When i say "matching", I mean that I used different colors and textures of leather to create the design used around the soundholes of the guitar. It's a one-of-a-kind strap, fully adjustable, very soft and supple, and it goes with the guitar. :D Also of course, there's the original HSC, the warranty card, instruction manual, etc.

If you wanna see pictures... www.dalyvoss.com/ovation

best wishes and blessings galore,
Susan

Correct me if I'm wrong here please.

The 1538 (12 string 1537) was issued in 1984.
The 1736 Legend Elite 12 was issued in 1985.
The 1758 Elite 12 was issued 1986-1993.

My assumption is the "Legend-Elite" name was so confusing that it became the 1758 Elite.
Where there any major construction differences between the 1736 and the 1758? Understandably the 1538 had significant "hand work" which was tooled down into the other models.

Besides looking wonderful on my wall what are some opinions about this model?

The guitar looks like it's in great condition. I used to have a 1718 Elite and loved it. This appears to be a 12 string version of that guitar. My opinion, probably a great guitar that I should own.

Unfortunately, I wrecked my truck today. I decided to pull off the road to check the load I was carrying and I turned into a fire hydrant. Stupid !@#$%&*fire hydrant! Although I was going slow, it felt like the Titanic hitting the infamous iceberg. I could feel sheetmetal tearing. $1600 damage. So it looks like I'm out of the running for this great guitar.

Beautiful 1758, excellant photos, haven't seen one that nice in quite a while, appears to be a collector quality instrument...no fret wear, unique wood graining...(there will might be a fight over this one...)

Susan, my daughter started out a few years ago on a 3/4 size Applause. Not a bad guitar at all! There was one on Ebay a while ago for something like $75, which seems like a pretty good deal since they go for a lot more than that new. Now that my girl is 13 she's upgraded to an Elite T and has become an Ovation addict.

Your son will likely grow out of his 3/4 size in just a few short years. Have you considered buying something used? And, as my kids like to say, you can always work some overtime.

Your guitar looks beautiful. I only wish I could afford it.

Yes, I wouldn't mind used... most of my guitars have come to me that way ;)

However, I've played all the "minis" out there and i'm not impressed with any of them. The Taylor had the best sound, but the action was INSANELY high. I can't believe they shipped it that way. Anyway... I have been reading about the Zager guitars, and I'm planning to get him one of their travel size guitars. I'm impressed with their solid spruce top and mahogany sides and back. No laminates. if you haven't seen them, check them out at zager.com.

He should grow out of that right into one of my Gibson B25's. Small body and small neck. One of them is the one my father bought me when i started out, but i was in 7th grade and the right size for it.

Anyone heard a Zager?

When I think about the nice guitar I could be playing instead of putting $1600 into my truck (considering the accident was an act of total stupidity), it makes me sick. I could be strummin away on a beautiful 30th anniversary Legend or something like that.

Hi all,

My 12 string on ebay is close to the reserve of $800, so i'm hopeful it will sell this evening (Tuesday).

What's the best way to prepare it for shipping? I spoke to the UPS store here, and they said they would just wrap the case in corrugated cardboard to protect it.

Any other suggestions?

thanks a bunch

Susan,
I just shipped an Adamas 12 to MI (out for delivery right now).

Loosen, but not slack, the string tension and pad the underside of the peghead for support in the case. Bag any "moveable" items and remove straps with buckles, etc. and secure the case. Ovation OHSC's are a great fit and protector.

Obtain a Kaman full size guitar box from your local GC or whoever.
Styrofoam, wadded newsprint or bubble wrap a "U" shape on the bottom of the box and slide the case down into it. Use similar material to fill in/pad the narrowed end of the case including the very top. If the box came with a positioner - bonus!

Place cardboard or old wood panel, etc. inside between the case and box if you have some. This is overkill but may help.

For instruments the "popcorn" is useless. Inflated bags are ok but still may shift.

Always pay the extra $10 for shipping insurance.

Pray!

UPS is OK, Fed Ex works on Saturday and USPS is cheaper and you will be the largest package in the truck. I try to leave a treat and a thank you note in the mailbox when I expect a delivery.

Don't worry about your auction. It's the last 5 minutes that matter!

Thanks everyone for the advice about selling my 12 string. It is now boxed up and ready to head out tomorrow to it's new home in Texas. After exchanging emails with the auction winner, i'm happily convinced it's going to a good home where it will join at least one other Ovation! Cool.

I've already ordered my son's 3/4 size Zager guitar, and am researching digital pianos, so the money is staying in the "music" dept here ;)

Susan, I emailed the winner and congratulated him also, and invited him to log on to the OFC. Congratulations on the sale. I was bidding on it, but fell into temptation and bought the Custom Legend 12 two days earlier.

Ahhh temptation! Congrats, Vince. Glad you emailed the guy... I'll do the same once he gets the guitar, to remind him about the OFC.

Susan,

Thanks again for the guitar. I'm pleased to hear that your son will benefit from your sale of this instrument. I am so sorry to hear of the loss you had in your neiborhood. Our prayers are with you all.

Thanks for the introduction to the ovation fan club, you are right there are a group of fine people here. Looks like I need to catch up on my collection of guitars.

1758 Elite 12 String (this guitar is awesome)
