http://cgi.ebay.com/Ovation-Elite-1537-Acoustic-Stereo-Electric-Gui...

You know though, even if I could buy it right now, I wouldn't, just due to the fact that I have had THREE guitars damaged over the past three years by the combination of UPS/FED EX/and Old Man Winter!!! Only seen adjustment/responsibility taken by the shipping co. ONCE so far.

Just isn't worth a lifetime of damage due to a cold spell and a careless grunt having a busy day delivering.

Norse, The 1537 seems notorious as one of the best instruments Ovation ever produced, so, here's a thought, why don't they resume production? There isn't a current Elite model that can compete with it, is there?

I don't think they can make money on it. To 90% of Ovation buyers it's no different that a celebrity deluxe. And the majority of those that would drop 2-large on a guitar are going to want something that smells like wood and has a high end name on it. Put a D28 and a 1537 side by side in a shop for the same price. Let people play them both and 9 out of 10 will buy the Martin. Sad but true. Dave

D-28 has too much overtones, I'd buy the 1537, but I'm die hard anyway...What's the current comparable model, the CE778?..

Dave, would people buy the Martin because it's an all wood guitar with the name Martin on it, or because they would think it sounds better?

Norse, it looks like an awfully good one. You might consider asking the seller, MWoody or MisterGolf to hold it for you until it warms up a bit and then ship it. Unless the bidding goes crazy tomorrow, this one should be tough to pass up. It's almost as good as the one I paid $1000 for and better than some that have sold for more than that.

Any reservtions that I had about the condition of this 1537 have been completely dispelled. I hope someone here wins it.

well, as I said "even if I could buy this..." I tell you what, I am getting soooooooooooooo frustrated...I seem to be able to finance everything else that gets dumped on me, but I can't find the dime for a 1537...everytime a great guitar comes along, I'm on the outside looking in. Oh well, that's life!

Norse(sorry about the rant but MAN!)man1

p.s. not to take away from the great guitars I have been blessed with...God is good...but families are E-X-P-E-N-S-I-V-E !!!!! (and priceless).

That is the solution. Treat this purchase as a household emergency. Send yourself the bill today and start making payments on it!

First of all, forget the OFC guys. Of course the vast majority here would pick the 1537. But we are a speck of dust among the guitar buying public. Also, forget how many people say they "like" this one or that one better. Put them side by side for the same price and see which one SELLS. I predict the Martin sells 10:1 of the 1537. Moody asks a great question - why?

The NAME and the LOOKS are a big thing. Nobody is going to second guess you for buying the Martin. As dearly as I LOVE Ovations and will continue to play and collect them, I am very, very tired of having to almost appologize to people that I own a "cheap" guitar with a "plastic" back. ARGGGGGG!

The SOUND is almost impossible to objective about. Everyones ears hear things differently. MAYBE the 1537 is a more pure and clear sound than the Martin. But you know what? I think to most people the Martin sounds more like the think a guitar "should" sound. I know that's crazy and maybe I'm not explaining it well.

Here's pretty much the whole thing in summary and it happened to me personally. A few years ago my own dear wife, who knows me better than any other person and has lived through a huge number of Ovations coming in and out the door, she says to me - "Why don't you get rid of most of these guitars and get yourself one REALLY NICE ONE, like a Martin". Now, she doesn't know Martin from Fartin', but somehow she knew that THAT was the standard and no matter what, THAT should be the ultimate goal for me.

'Nuf said ....

Why depressed? Btw, I took HALF of my wifes suggestion. Bought the Martin, but never purged the rest of the collection. Dave

How'd you do that. I can normally justify add a guitar only if it is different than those I already have.

Dave,

That's EXACTLY what my wife told me recently ...

I'd been GAS(ing) on a black Al DiMeola model for quite sometime now, and was thinking of parting with both the balladeer and applause, in addition to saving up some money, when she said that.

Heck, she's not even happy with the current DM that I own, and she wants me to part with that too for an HD-28, which she claims is the one "REALLY NICE ONE."

I can't believe this 1537 has been sitting at $710 for 3 days. Just like stocks, as soon as I buy something the value goes down.

Six hours to go on the bidding.

Mark, easy answer here....buy this one and you just averaged your investment. Then wait for a hungry OFC member, sell one of them and you will probably turn a small profit on your "average" investment. Not a problem.

Not a problem for you, Jeff. Your wife tells you to go ahead and buy what you want. My wife knows that I love buying stuff, but hate selling it. I'd still have 2 Porsches if I could.

Mark, Send me back the 1537 and pick up this one on eBay!
The eBay seller says that its "Condition is 9.5 out of 10". How could you go wrong?

I starting missing the one I sent you as I was packing it up.
So much went into resurrecting it... I didn't realize I would get that attached to it.

No way Bruce. I say goodbye to it every morning and carry it around with me when I'm home. I don't like going out in the evenings because I miss my 1537. I haven't been this attached to an object since I got the Boxster. My wife is jealous. She also realizes that I wouldn't want to part with it, even if I had another one.

If I may, let me throw out a different slant on this subject. I was watching The Ovation Channel (who'da thunk we'd have our own cable channel) anyway, they run a series with musicians who were popular at the time.. It is sort of the forerunner of "Unplugged". Anyway David Crosby and Graham Nash doing their duo stuff. They had matching Martins and they sounded great. A few months ago I saw Jim Croce doing the same show, playing Ovations. They sounded great too. To my ears, the difference is the Martin's(and Dove's and Hummingbird's and Guild's)sound like really fine folk acoustic guitars while Ovations sound more like rock and roll acoustic guitars. They are brighter, have much more dynamics and are much edgier than traditional acoustics. They are the "rock and roll" version of the acoustic guitar.
I think it is like comparing and old Gibson Johnny Smith Special to a Flying V. They are both electrics but made for different purposes.
I think the reason we like O's is we dig that edgy, off-center, sound that they produce. At least I do. Not everybody does and in fact, they may not be the best sound for all performances. But we like 'um and except for the guys who buy and sell to make a living, I'm happy they are not priced out of reach.
One quick story then I'll get out of this rant.
I was lucky enough to be in a band with a guy who was a pretty good guitarist. In fact he placed in the top three at the National Flat-picking contest for a couple of years in a row. He was a Martin-attic. If it didn't have an "M" it was junk as far as he was concerned. He HATED my Balladier. To him it was too loud.. Too bright.. and too crisp sounding for his taste. That was his choice, but it never swayed me. He later discovered Gallagher and still plays them.

We are an exclusive club of sorts because we look beyond the normal to find the sound that fits our playing and our ears.
The short answer is: Would I own a Martin (or something like it)? Yes.. Would I sell all my O's to buy one... Nope.
