Location: Phoenix AZ | Nice, but not as nice as my Blackbear Baritone uke (sorry to boast). Baritone's are very fickle things. There is not a lot of string tension, so some can really sound like crap. Aquila makes some special Bari strings that allow you to tune it up to Tenor tuning (without destroying the instrument, which is what will happen if you try this with Bari strings). This sounds awesome. Basically a tenor uke with a longer scale and bigger body. You could call it a Barry Bonds Tenor. Dave |

Location: Scotland | Dave the Aquila baritone strings are desiged to be tuned GCEA, one octave below Soprano/tenor (as opposed to the regular baritone tuning of DGBE) They are all monofilament synthetic gut, no wound strings. We have just started stocking them. Also means that you don't have to transpose, you just use the same shapes as sop/tenor. Aquila have also introduced (that should be re-introduced) genuine gut strings. They claim to have found a way around the problems inherent in real gut. They're pretty expensive but supposed to be even better than the regular Aquilas. We have some samples on the way. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | Yup Paul, those are the ones I'm using. Sounds really nice. I'll have to check it, but I don't think they're an octave below tenor - I'm pretty sure they are spot on tenor. Have you tried Guadalupe strings? All 4 are wound. They sound amazing but are expensive and wear out pretty quick. Dave |

Location: Scotland | Dave, modern tenor tuning is the same as soprano with the option of a low G. If you are tuning your baritone to sop tuning it's gonna be tight on that scale length, and kinda defeats the object of the bigger body and longer scale. I may have it wrong, I'll talk to the guys at Aquila in the morning.
Incidentaly, we have an interesting long-neck uke that has a tenor scale on a soprano body. |
