I am seeking an Ovation for use with my chuch band. I already have a acc/elec Takamine dreadnought and a electric (strat) but looking for something more stage friendly that will cover most praise-type songs.
Requirements:
- Budget of $600 shipped incl. hard case
- Like wood (not painted) neck
- Prefer inlay shape over dots
- Prefer naturual color wood over paint/stain
- Prefer wood leaf-shaped "epaulets" over center hole
- Prefer cutaway
- Prefer thin body
- Electronics/pickup are key as this is stage guitar
Let me know if anyone has something that would work for me.
thanks,
Ken |

Good choices and that's a good price range. Have you searched the recent "For Sale" posts? |

| Welcome to the club. Check out ebay item#330013368059. It's a shallow bowl Elite. There is also a beautiful deep bowl cedar-top Elite at a very good 'buy-it-now' price, ebay item#130013441666. There may also be OFC members who have an instrument you would like.

I recently purchased one for a girl I know who's starting a church with her husband in Iowa City. I was able to get it for $400, and it was a very nice instrument, plays and sounds incredible for having the super shallow bowl. They have been averaging around $500 and since most people seem to prefer a deeper bowl, there tends to be less competition on sales. Note: All this applies ONLY if you are going to play plugged in. |

Here's another super shallow with a buy it now under your $600 mark. This one appears to be in great shape and has the case with it.

But he is in Couer d'Alene, ID.....
As the others have noted, your $600 budget will buy you pretty much whatever you want in the Ovation category. |

Not an Elite, but I have a 4 month old Balladeer 1868LX with OP Pro electronics and case. $600 shipped to you in the OHSC, and I'll include a strap with Dunlop straplocks on it to boot. Cherry Cherry Burst, not Natural, but very pretty and a great guitar. Posted here below in the ads, but the Ebay auction is long finished. Pics on request. Good luck in your search. |

Welcome to the club. "Bluecrabboy" has (had?) an Elite for sale, down about 12 posts after this. If it's not gone, it might be worth looking into. I have a shallow LX that I really like, and I run it through our system to lead worship if Robbie needs a back-up(He's known as "worshipleader" here--away in Mexico on a missions trip; you'll have a chance to meet him on the board, I'm sure.) Mine sounds really good that way; if you do get a shallow body, you won't be sorry.
Blessings, Karen

Location: Chicago area | Wow, you guys are awesome! I posted this, and figured it would take a few days to get some response. Can't believe I have 18 replys already. Some with great links (and looks like bvince had to even jump on one of them ;-) . Good advice from Woody to be on lookout and patient. I have had two GREAT offers already and I am getting close. I sure would like to play a shallow bowl, but there are none in stores around me. I am curious how much difference in sound there is. Also I have heard that due to the round back of the Ovation bowl, the guitar moves around alot while standing and playing with a strap, potentially forcing you to readjust with your fretting wrist. Is there truth to that? Is is better with the shallow bowl? I know that the o-bowls tend to slide on leg when sitting down...but this one is mainly for stage work.
Thanks for all the links and I will keep looking and being patient ;-)
peace and grace...Ken |

Location: East Wenatchee, WA | I have adapted very well to both a deep and mid bowl and would imagine that a shallow bowl would be even less of an issue.
I find the only adjustments I have to make are while I am sitting, although from time to time (depending on how much pizza I ate the night before) I may have to pull the guitar around my round belly a bit, but it does not demand an adjustment on the fretboard.
I would bet that the shallow back is probably more like playing an electric. I find round backs much more comfortable than box guitars.

Welcome. I have all three depths now, and have owned three O's with the shallow bowl, and I can still say that it is by far my favorite to play on stage. Plugged in, you won't notice a difference in sound if your preamp is working correctly, and I have NEVER had a problem with "slipping" on the guitar. (it's plastic, not linoleum!) :D
Most of the time, if someone offers a negative to the roundbacks of Ovation, it's usually a Martin player or someone who has no love lost for Ovations anyway...
Leading worship, if you play agressively (i.e. mostly NOT fingerstyle) and you're not as worried about unplugged sound, go with a shallow. My 1881 Adamas II shallow is always my first choice for stage stuff.
The trick to good sound in a shallow is to find a USA-made Ovation. The ones bvince pulled up are all good. The guitars you're looking at will still sound good unplugged - they're just not quite as rich and deep as the larger bowls. Personally, I'd go for an 1868 or one of the 1778T (mid-bowl) models - they are REALLY cool! You do see the 1868 shallow in the Elite T from time to time, but they are more rare. First choice is an Adamas, but in the range you're looking at go with an Elite or Custom Legend shallow.
Here's a couple more to check:
late 80\'s - early 90\'s 1868
1858 shallow 12-string natural |

I also play an 1886 12 sdtring that is a shallow bowl, and going back and forth between them I notice no difference in the way they move around, though unplugged the shallow bowls loose a lot of sound. |

As someone who just switched from a shallow bowl to a mid-depth there is a bit of a change in the feel and playing position when standing. It took me an hour or so to get the feel for the deeper bowl and different balance point, but now there is no problem going back and forth between the depths.
;) Shameless marketing plug: My super shallow 6686 is for sale. Ken I sent you a private message.

I just ordered my first Ovation (LX Elite 6778LX-newengland burst), and will be blessed to have such a fine instrument for my praise work. More on that story on another thread....
I also think I will have a happy home here on the OFC !!! |

I have a question... I thought your budget was $600. Did you score a new Elite 6778LX for that?
Stick around, and congrats on the new axe!
