The collapse of the CD is here, worst time in 20 years.

http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/med...

Due to this lack of sales, I have boxes of CDs that I am going to have to move somehow.

So, my CD "Con La Lluvia" (which I used my Ovations in many tunes) is available to OFCers for $5 including media shipping in the US.
(paypal slara59@yahoo.com)

I also have many other of my releases available.

Contact me if interested.

Juxtapose against this the rise of independent sales.

Friend of mine is a music teacher and has written several books, recorded several CDs in support of instructional materials she has written for her programs. She sells to teachers all over the world.

One of her CDs has sold more than a 50,000 copies. She tried to register with the Canadian recording industry to get her gold record. They don't recognize her independent sales figures.

Before we get a chance to get used to the new world, it's new all over again.

If you don't own Con La Lluvia. Get it now! It's a great CD. For $5 it's a steal!

I'll order several when I get home Sunday and figure out how to use Paypal. Navidad is a Christmas season regular at our house.

Paypal is way easier for me Serge ... so how about I just include a little extra to cover those fees?

There is a very interesting industry letter that is published by Bob Lefsetz. We got dialed into this when my son's song got released. You can subscribe at www.lefsetz.com. But the one I got a day or so ago is somewhat applicable to the situation that CA is finding himself in --- Interesting Reading.

Serge, maybe it's time to stop making CD's. The industry is changing, we all need to change with it or die. Pretty soon the CD will be as outdated as the Compact Cassette.

It took me a long time to realize that ipods and downloaded music is the current big step and replacement for cd's....

You mean cassettes are out?! I just got a new stylus for my turntable and was hoping to hang on to that technology for a few more years. No ipods or downloaded music yet.

Serge ... I have your CD already!
At that price, you might want to try moving them on half.com. I bet you'd sell them all.
The CD is on the way out, just like the lp. My neice one day asked me, after seeing a vendor in brooklyn, uncle, why are those cd cases so big? And I told her, those are not cds, those are record albums, and she said, I've seen DJ's use them. She owns no cd's, it's all in her computer and in her mp3 player. I believe she uses one from creative technologies. I'll miss holding the the box and reading the liner notes ...

Though I heard the decline in sales has slowed. I guess the independants and specialists are taking up the slack.

I got boxes of cassettes I don't listen to... Too much hassle.
The CD's I got, I play once into my Media Player, then I might burn some songs on disc to take to work.
(Then I don't care if I get paint all over them... Not piracy, really!)
But I have thought about buying a turntable, cuz you can get some classic stuff at Thrift Stores.

Temp, you are absolutely right, there will be no more CDs and I will not manufacture more.

My problem now is that I have 10 releases, so I have many boxes of each one, in addition to various compilations that I am also included.

An yes Tony, I have LPs available too. :) "Sergiology" released in 1984 and "The New One" released in 1981.

So I have boxes of my LPs, cassettes, and CDs. They use to sell on gigs and stores, but now it is only downloads, and yes I am already on all the popular downloads sites, which means nothing, barely any sales.

So the idea is to move this product I already have.

The record stores will consign, that is the way it works, all the CDs you see in stores are there on consignment and labels have to wait to get paid until they sell, but I am not playing that game anymore, they will just gather dust plus it is a hassle getting paid.

Many of my friends in the biz are disolving bands and waiting to see what is going to happen, I visited with a friend a few weeks ago, he is the leader of a well known swing band from Austin, TX, we met at our lawyer's office and we were chatting and another friend asked him how was business, and he said, ...well, we made $1 million Dls. last year.........................it cost me $2 million"..................true story.

I tell you guys, the music biz is ruined, music as a hobby is great, and these days the only way to barely make ends meet it is to play constantly on the road and I am not doing that any more. There is no money and I have a family.

Would you go out on the road with a bunch of guys and leave your wife home? Let me know and I will stay with your wife. :)

Just kidding around of course.

Anyway, thanks for your response.

And there it is, the stark reality. One of the few intelligent choices I made in my life was NOT to turn pro. I see guys my age all the time who sneer at "hobby bands". They're pushing 60, drive (and sometimes live in) wrecks, have no savings or retirement, marriages long gone, no medical or dental, no comfort in the future - but they look down on me. What really pisses them off is I'm as good as they are.

The only working pros I know with decent off-stage lives are people who are also involved in music education or retail, and one guy who is a luthier. The guys who are still chasing the dream, the guys with air-brushed photos on their web sites, the guys waiting for THAT call they expect to come any day - well, it just makes me sad.

I wish I could do more for them than be the object of their derision. But if that helps . . .

You put it well, First Al. Me and the boys occasionally feel a cold blast from the "professional world", but, then again, our needs are modest: I would define success as follows:

1) a few gigs a month
2) for the "right" crowd
3) keep it new: inspiration, material
4) ALWAYS have fun

If anyone wants a contest, I'll bring my axe.
