Location: SoCal | The Patriot was an A braced Legend (like the Custom Legends of the day), with the special stencil that was destroyed after 1776 were built. The top was a stained spruce. It also had the CL truss rod cover.
A very nice guitar in it's day. |

Not a Balladeer or a Legend...A brace, AAA spruce, ebony fretboard, etc. (like a custom legend or Legend, Ltd.).
"Connecticut nutmeg" stain on top, hand stenciled Commemorative on top (drum and 13 star U.S. flag), 14-fret 5-piece mahogany / maple neck, white-bound 20-fret ebony fretboard, abalone diamond shaped inlays, pinless walnut bridge with 2 abalone dots, gold tuners, mahogany truss rod cover with abalone diamond inlay, w-b-w-b-w-b-w-b top purfling, leaf soundhole rosette, ~25-1/4" scale, 1-11/16" nut width, 15-5/8" lower bout.
From Ovation's timeline, the interest in this guitar from collectors was a major factor in the factory later coming out with the yearly Collectors.
I don't know why but the nutmeg finish on the 1776, Lennon 1651-7, and 1984 Collectors gives a slightly different voice than the natural or other finishes. Not as much as specialty woods such as Koa but my wife describes it as "more depth".
I have both the a/e and the acoustic.
I do believe #1 and #76 are still for sale for the true collector. |

Location: NJ | This is probably my least-favorite Ovation model, so I'm all that familiar with them, but my question is:
Did they ALL have the bolted-on bridges, or is this something inherent to this particular specimen??
(I may be wrong, but) I can't recall ever seeing an Ovation with the bridge bolts spaced that close together . . . |

Location: SoCal | Awhile back, I "adopted" # 880 acoustic for $720 (eventual trade or sale)...was originally offered a lot higher ($1,400). Could probably find in OFC archive/vault.
Only saying this to let you know this eBay auction may be a great deal depending on reserve and actual condition.
Appears to be acoustic but they are boomers...heck, I don't even plug in the other a/e. |
