Location: NJ | Y'know, I'd always thought of LongNecks as a bit of a "novelty", but since I've had one, it's just blown my brain open when it comes to playing now . . .
I've always tried t'get our two guitars to sound "different" from each other at gigs, so usually what I'll do is capo my guitar up and play different chords (transposing the chords "down" in my head). . .
NOW with the LongNeck, I've got to transpose "up" and it totally screws with my head (let ALONE the head of the other person that I'm playing with).
It just increases your "palette" of guitar sound possiblities.
I HIGHLY recommend 'em . . . |

Grab a longneck with big strings, tuned A-A and a Papoose tuned A-A. Problems with transposing solved!
At Ed St. Onge's that Baritone 12 was strung lightly so that it was E-E with about 50 frets open for playing. Very adaptable. |

| A few years ago this guitar would have gone for $200 more, and this one is in better shape than the ones on the 'bay back then. I remember a very nice Longneck with the tobaccoburst finish. The reserve was never met and it never relisted. |

These are specialty guitars, and worth a lot more than what these two fetched, but being a specialty the relative amount you'll get for one will vary based on timing. My experience watching these says that in a couple of months there will be one out there that sells for $750+. |

I stopped at 530.00 with 5 sec left because I was unsure of the condition. The one that went last, I was driving home when it went. I guess it wasn't meant to be. Anyhow, I'm waiting on the repair est. on the 1681 from John, and I know, (as the monkey said while urinating in the bank vault), "this could run into some money" |

$535 seems like an incredibly good deal on a very unique guitar. |

That also could be the reason they went cheaper as well.

1. Why sell right after Xmas and before tax refunds?
2. On such a unique instrument, why sell 2 at the same time?
At least no one can say the OFC suppressed prices on theses auctions! |

I read either here or somewhere else that you've tuned yours B2b . . .
What strings?
The LongLegg's got EJ17(meds) on it now, and (t'me) it seems t'sound a little "bright". I was thinking of going heavier for a bit more "thump".
Bill, do y'know what Adrian liked t'tune to??
I'm wondering if possibly he wasn't pleased with sound at the tuning he liked and "fixed" it by shaving that brace (it DOES look like it was done with a pocketknife). I'm wondering if that shaved brace is making it sound bright t'me (at D2d). . .
My other thought is to try those GHS GypsyStrings . . .
I didn't care for what they do for the sound of a SlotHead, but this might be a curious application (especially with lower tuning).
They're kinda' "light" though.
Anybody know who makes 'em in "portly" or possibly "husky"??
Fred?? |

Yup, B-B in a standard tuning. I read somewhere that this was best with the big strings. With the deep bowl, your insides will rumble. :)
Right now, John Pearse phosphor bronze .15-.62. The packaging says to tune in open F (C-F-C-F-A-C). I also tried the LaBella strings which were .14 - .70; I think I liked them a little better. Next up some D'Ad EXP23s which are .16-.70.
I got all of them from www.juststrings.com, under Baritone guitar. Good outfit ... decent prices and I get my strings within a couple of days of ordering.
BTW, with medium strings, there was nothing special about the guitar (IMHO). With the right strings, it is a whole nuther beast. I think LaBella makes them in a set that is .16-.80, so you can go really low if you want. |

I think Matt was handing out single .007's or something to drop tune a regular scale guitar. You'd drop the 1st string of a set of mediums, making them a 17-70 set. That would definitely get you into the C-tuning range on the longLegg. Since I dont completely hate them, the EXP's would likely be little mellower. or in EJ's build this all wrapped set:
PB020
PB027
PB039
PB049
PB059
PB070

No, I had them on my 1112-1 and it was an interesting player.
After missing the Baritone I was gloomily surfing the bay when this Deacon Case popped up!
If it fits my 12 that will be soooo cool. |

I tune My Adamas a full note down for a bunch of stuff. It seems to work fine but I'll bet you can crank this down more than that with medium/heavy strings on it.

And now the seller is being a serious pain in the rear about the mail-transit-time for the check. He realizes he didn't get enough money for it, and is threatening to void the auction. Grr. (That's what reserve prices are for!) |

I use EJ18's (14-59)on it and love the sound, tuned down a full step to D. I tried some heavier strings for a while but it was like playing on ropes and never could get used to them. |

| Jacob,
Perhaps you could inform the seller that 3000 members of the Ovation Fan Club are watching to see if he is going to be honest about his auctions. If you honestly won the auction according to the rules, then he is risking a serious negative feedback. I looked at his rating and there was one buyer who apparently missed a paypal option and got nothing but grief from him. Other than that he has a good rating. |

That is one of the upsides of Paypal. Fast payment and the onus of completion is on the Seller. |

You just stick with the sellers own terms. If he sent you his address to mail the check right away, the earliest you could've gotten it out was Saturday, maybe Monday if you got him the postal money order HE requested. It's only Thursday. He has nothing to worry about until next Monday at the earliest, especially if you've been in contact with him about the payment status etc. Was he willing to deduct the additional costs of USPS Priority or ExpressMail from the cost of the guitar? |

Location: Berkeley, CA | I sent the check out in the middle of last week. And for this particular auction, he's shipping it by UPS ground (cross country) after the check clears. So I've got to wait at least 2 or 3 weeks before I'll ever even see the guitar. Considering that, you'd think he'd be less worried about making the transaction as fast as possible. AND, he didn't threaten me with negative feedback until I sent him the e-mail telling him the check was in the mail. What a punk. |

Location: Berkeley, CA | And about strings, I'm still messing around with different string weights and tunings to see what I like best. I did the EXP23 Baritone set... those were good, but almost too heavy unless I tuned all the way down to A or Bb. The size of them felt alright.
But the strings that seem to be working best for me is the set of the same 14's that Bill likes, and tune them to about C or C#. From there I'll use alternate/drop tunings, and it never gets too slinky or anything. So I just ordered a couple sets of custom matched coated strings from JustStrings.com that is just a touch heavier than the heavies (to accomodate the detuning)

| Jacob, Keep us informed about this seller, if he keeps up his end of the deal...sounds like he is making as much profit on the shipping as he can. Some sellers are more responsive than others. I paid just $20 for shipping and insurance from Phoenix to Tennessee. My guitar arrived quickly and in perfect condition. Of course, I paid by a bank wire and the seller had his money immediately. But, Ebay is risky at times...buyer beware. |

Apparently he has just recently had some problems with a non-paying bidder of a $6 CD... and was pre-emptively frustrated with me. Not fair, but understandable, I guess.
I'll post again when I get the guitar, and am officially an Ovation owner! |

| ... a $6 CD?...that's just strange, I've got a friend with a serious ebay store and a $6 dollar item is miniscule by comparison, but I guess it all adds up. We look forward to some pics/tunes when you get your Longneck! :)
