looks nice, 12 frets to the body, deep bowl, stereo, newer case, between 650/750 but my opinion only and e-bay's been really soft on O's lately...

and since I've been playing Serge's/now Al's 1624 for a couple days now.... I might be in on this one... hate this new system on e-bay tho... can't see when you guys are in on one.

the classical's are nice, I now have a much better appreciation of them after playing this one... but also now more GAS

I don't know about price, but I have not seen very many sunburst 1613's. Has stereo stacked P/A ? Based on the photos the seller seems more proud of the case than he is of the guitar. If you could grab it for the opening bid that would probably be a good deal. Looks very dirty. Dave

keeping an eye on it... I have the 85 collectors 12 on it's way to the mothership for neck ra/freshening next week, so might have to wait till John tells me what the repairs are gonna cost till I think about another one... meanwhile I'll just play Country Artist's old country artist..

Good Luck!,

Daves right, anything other than -4 on the classicals is pretty uncommon. I could be wrong but this doesn't look like the usual 'burst pattern and color for the era so could be a refinish. Also as far as I can remember every sunburst I've seen from that time had the neck and headstock face bursted also and this one doesn't.

I couldn't figure out what that was. I thought all the Classics had the little round fretboard extension over the sound hole. I couldn't read the label from the picture.
If it's in good condition, I think anything under $400 would be a good deal. The 1613s are Spanish Pine, which I understand is another name for cedar. The 1713s are cedar.

Well spotted. The end of the fingerboard looks a little ragged, maybe the extension has been broken off

the spec sheet photo on the homepage shows a small fingerboard extension. i emailed the seller early today regarding any issues. have not heard back yet. the opening bid was my limit.

And I can see who the bidder is on this one. Weird. Go for it, Lanaki.
The difference on this one seems to be the spruce top, rather than cedar or spanish pine. I was advised I'd like cedar better with nylon strings and I do.

hmmmm...this 1616 is a 1974 model. '74 was a memorable year for me. i'm not sure just how i accomplished it, but i managed to graduate from kailua high school on o'ahu that year. i got my first car as a graduation gift from my step-dad and mom. it was a 1958 cadillac coupe convertible, white with black leather interior, in excellent condition. it is certainly not a car i would have purchased for myself at the time and frankly, i was embarrased driving it around. funny how time and circumstances can change one's perspective. i wish i had that car now. a couple months after i got it, my younger brother stole my keys and took it out joy-riding with some friends. he plowed it into the side of a mountain. the car survived just fine, but that whole mountain came down and buried my brother and his friends alive.
OPTIONAL ENDING: my brother and his friends all survived just fine, but to this day the tail end of that caddy remains jutted out of the side of that mountain in makapu'u.
OPTIONAL AND MOST LIKELY ENDING: my brother and his friends survived just fine, although the caddy did not and had to be hauled to the car garbage place where it was sold for parts. my brother and i went to fists in the driveway of our home when he grabbed a knife and chased me up and down the streets through our neighborhood in maunawili.

oh yeah...this is about that '74 model 1616 Ovation Classical guitar. i might bid on it just for the memories.

well... looks like I get to check out the inconsistencies on this one first hand. had a max of 350 on it, and well... it's now mine for 330.

I did e-mail the seller several days ago with the usual questions as well as about the fingerboard... but he/she never got back to me.

if it's a refin, the burst does look good, it's a deep bowl which I prefer, and I have 2 other stereo guitars and do use a stereo rig.. so was worth to me what I paid for it if it's in somewhat decent condition... and if a trip up north is warranted.. up it'll go.

and I do want a classical so this one should fill the bill...

even if I have to clean up/dremel the end of the fingerboard(or not).

well.... I know it hasn't been 48 hours yet since the close of the auction, but this one's already starting to look shaky... still no response from the seller for either my questions which were asked before auctions end, or acknowledgement of my winnning bid.
also, his e-mail account which was supposedly verified via paypal is no longer active... I have already contacted paypal, and will in 10 days submit a report with e-bay if still not received or no contact... since was paid via paypal on our credit card I don't foresee any problems retrieving my payment but... the lack of communication is disheartening... he may have already shipped it, or not, and I did tell him that I understood and apologized for my concerns if he was away or was an emergency... but at this point I'm a little concerned, and was looking forward to having a deep-bowl classical.

for those interested, I did catch another falling star on this one(at least in my opinion). and...

This is the second time that the seller shipped me a guitar in nothing but the ohsc, taped shut, and a label slapped on the side... and arrived intact with no issues, they must handle them better without a box I guess...

It's a 1979 1613-1 sunburst classical ser#184023, hand laid deep-bowl, no finish cracks at all, stereo output with stacked tone/vol(special order?), there is no fretboard extension (again special order?) or if was broken off was repaired to appear it never was there.

electronics/pickup not yet tested, but will let you all know soon.

The guitar is really dirty but should clean up nice, everything is where it should be and unbroken or damaged, the neck is straight, and no major dings anywhere. top is flat and with a good "tap check" all bracing appears to be tight. the gold hardware has a slight bit of pitting on it but again should clean up pretty easily.

the binding is pretty heavily checked all the way around, but all is tight with no lifting or real cracks all the way through. neck/headstock in smooth undinged or chipped condition very nice.

this is not a standard burst(at least in my opinion) and is a teardrop with no light finish showing above mid-soundhole, very "Gibby" in appearance.

ohsc, tuner, case candy, brochure, warranty card, key, and a Mel Bay "Easy Way to Guitar A" included as well all in good condition. (maybe I'll try and learn to play with it).

this guitar is extremely light and loud with a very deep resonant tone, blows Al's 1624 completely out of the water and then some even with the ancient strings on the 1613 which are at least 2 years old.

so with a little elbow grease, some mequiar's and some new strings along with a new battery if the elx are in funtioning shape, I think I did alright for $370 shipped..

I knew I wanted one of these, think I found a great one.

This one came via Brown from TX, the other which was a custom built 1of50 ssb elite, came fedex out of NY.

both times waited to hear the rattle of kindling and slack strings when I picked up the case.. and instead was pleasantly surprised both times.. not that I would ever think of shipping that way... but it worked for them.

1st 2 inch neck I've played, really nice.. and vintage deep-bowls seem to be my favorites so again I've been blessed with a goodun.

well it's a winner all around, the pickup and preamp are working both in mono and stereo, the pots are really stiff, and the preamp module moves around a little when turning vol/tone because of it, but nothing that some wd-40 and a tug on the nut won't fix when I take it apart to clean/detail it up at string change..

so now waiting for John B. to call me back(out today) and let me know what it originally looked like or if it is how it originally looked/was configured when it left CT 28 years ago..

the 85 collectors is supposed to be delivered to service tomorrow as well for refreshing so what I saved on this will probably be made up for by the price of the neck RA/fret dress and minor blemish repairs on that.

anyway, OUR? 2985 will be at the factory today for refreshing, I guess it's still up in the air as to who's paying for the repairs while it's there, and whether it's heading south or west when done. ;)

Thanks,

John B. from the mothership just called regarding the 1613, tells me it's as made including stereo and the finish and fretboard, according to him it is era correct and a couple of versions were produced to include white and black finish tops. He's seeing if he can dig up the warranty card for it like they did for my others and will see where it was sold first if was ever registered for warranty.

There is no better customer service on the planet. Thanks John!!
