The best way to find out what its worth to the world right now is to post it on Ebay with a reserve you can live with but start at $1 for the starting price. The highest bid - that's your value.
I'll give you $200 so you don't have to listen to something that sounds good for an Ovation.
Is that like having a nice tan for a Floridian? |

One like this went for $1250.00 about a month ago.
Then again... I've seen others go for half that.

about the breadwinner... how much you looking for? I'd possibly like to take a drive down to check it out if you want a fair price for it.
we'll just add it to the project pile.
we might get it to sound ok... but it's just an Ovation :p

I doubt you're going to get what you want for it (you never have stated even a ballpark price).
A guitar with a body that has been completely broken in half is not going to get top dollar, that's just the facts. |

| "what's a vipertron"
Michael(mwoody), myself, and others here rebuild/restore/revive old Ovation guitars... as original electronics are hard to find for the most part, we use other alternatives. MWoody makes some of the best interpretations/examples.
the Viper III body used for this rebuild was prepped/stripped by him. and assembled/finished by my luthier and myself.

| It helps when you have a friend who's a custom luthier with a full shop.... most of the work is Brett's, I did some sanding, buffing, and layout work.. but all the finish work is his, I was the sub-assembly guy.
wait till you see the shaved pd neck that's going on the artist body. Brett really likes these book-matched mahogany necks.
and the UKXII with the bluebird 12 neck is going to be a knockout. the vipertron was just a warmup.
thanks for the compliments.
it plays even better than it looks. but it's ALs now... built it for him so I could justify the cost of parts for the Bluebird tribute to swmbo...
it has to go home soon... but it's getting an ebony trc first.

ok..... so that would make my offer pretty valid and acceptable, using your own statement.
like I said... I'll even come pick it up.. the repair/paint job is a non-issue for me, as long as it's solid and the pickups/electronics are in good working order.. even if it needs a refret.. still ok.

some of my and other's solid bodies equal and surpass a lot of the gibsons that cost as much as 4 times more.
yeah... ok Michael, BFG, I'll throw in a dozen of the blue ofc picks and an official pick-holder/key chain.

Your profile (am I profiling now?) says you are into sales. So I'm sure you know the importance of researching your market territory and knowing your product..
The problem is, as Al Pepiak explained it in the introduction to the site, that Ovations don't get the respect they deserve.
I see 30 year old Gibson/Fender parts that are tired but can still gather a hoard of fans and command high prices. Was their copper wire any better? Was their Bakelite made of a better formula? No. Just Namebrand marketeering and pop culture fadism.
Yes there are some awesome examples that have "The Sound" but they are closely tailed by a gaggle of "the rest".
Here's some optimistic values according to Uncle Woody's Bottomfeeder Fleabay Index, the UWBFI for short:
Solid body neck, refinishable $35-$75
deduct if different tuner holes.
Plastic bodied tuners, cmp $30 set, deduct for missing and broken.
Set of pickups, working, $100 each
Working Active electronics $150-$200
Serialized Neck Plate - $30
Unserialized or Early Neck Plate - $50
Body, One pc, no flaws, wood grained, $75-$175
Body, Strippable, Mahogany-$50-$100
Body, Polane (speckle flat paint), no damage-$50-$125
Body, broken, unrefinishable without bondo-$35
Nut, Knobs, Jackplate-$10-$40
I was joking on the $210 offer. It was to see if you'd commit to a price.
All too often newbies come on here and flash a model number expecting to hear that it is the lost key to a buried treasure or something. BTW - when I demo a wall I still look for treasure maps.
There are a few of us hard up wannabe luthiers that think they can breathe new life and wonder out of the unloved, bent and broken.
It may be a sickness but I ain't looking for the cure.
Just treatment... |

You might be better off selling it in pieces than throwing any more money at it. People are gonna knock a heck of a lot off of what they'd pay for it given that the body has been broken in two.
Best of luck, you may get $500 for it in pieces. Seems like that comes up quite a bit short of what a Gibson Standard w/ 60's neck is going for these days. |

| so far, in my somewhat few years of enjoying Ovations.... there has always(almost) been another one.. or one that will for the time fill the bill, I have a spare neck at this point, and other assorted sb parts.. so guess I'll just wait for a deacon/bw body to show up for a fair price.
B.F.G. good luck with your sale, sorry we got your dander up.
and btw... welcome to the OFC!!

Oh yesh.. much better playing guitars indeed. And that's the real reason to own ANY guitar.... to PLAY it.. that's why PLAYERS should OWN them.. not "store" them to gouge passionate players later.. when they feel the time is right. How disgraceful is that, right? hhahahaaa |

Life's too short to have mediocre instruments.
I have a customized Viper that is now in the custody of Paul, the proprieter of the Ovation UK site. Shipping was just under $100 and I'm not sure what Customs costs are but the Europeans are used to paying more for what we have.
BFG - If I had your BW here is what I would do with it. I would refinish the neck and obtain a newer body, finish it in a natural wood tone using the electronics as well.
Then I would use the once split body and mate it with a through body 5 string Bass neck. The Carvin options looked good.
That's my fantasy. You gotta dream once in a while. |
