o 2005 Adamas Custom Shop Guitar
o Model 1688 Adamas 1 12-string
o Deep adamas bowl with extra gold sparkle
o Carved walnut bridge
o Carved walnut adamas headstock
o Walnut neck and fretboard w/ adamas inlays
o Adamas suspension ring top mounting
o Gold Schaller tuners
o Custom color (light beige to light blue fade)
o OP-PRO electronics w/ XLR
Here it is - the cream of the cream when it comes to 12 strings. There is NOTHING like an Adamas 1 12-string. And this one was built new in 2005 with many custom features. The sound is just amazing. Easily the loudest, yet most refined guitar I have ever heard. The set up and playability would rival most electrics. I could go on and on, but you just won't find a better 12-string so don't waste your time looking.
In addition to the custom top color, this guitar was built with extra sparkle in the bowl paint. Very much like the slothead guitars. But by far the best aspect of this instrument is the OP-Pro electronics w/ XLR output. This takes the tone monster and makes it a real gigging guitar. The guitar was custom ordered new in 2005 by an OFC member and I aquired it from him last year. Easily the best 12-string I ever played, but sadly it gets little use. Those who followed my aquisition of this fine instrument will recognoize that I am selling it for less than I paid. Absolute spotless new condition with perfect hard shell case.

This is an absolute STEAL!!!
I played this at Dave's house last year, and it's an AWESOME 12-string!
Somebody should REALLY "jump" on this one.
(The only thing I don't like are those gay, "outtie" eppauletes . . .)
I'm taking bets on exactly when the screen name is gonna change to "DaveCollings". |

The Collings arrived yesterday with a big note on the box saying "No Martins Were Sacrificed In The Aquisition Of This Guitar."

It's staying in the OFC family but the buyer keeps a low profile, so this might go into seclusion.
Several people have asked if my other 12's are for sale. NO. But to make a small plug here - I do believe there are a couple of U681-12's still available new. They are AMAZING guitars. I encourage anyone looking for a top end 12-string to check them out.

~congratulations!
i wanted it BAAAAADDD, but just couldn't make it happen now.
the colors of that guitar are reminiscent of the sand and beaches and sky of hawaii. if it doesn't work out for you, which i highly doubt, let me know.
(i may just have to custom order one similar. perhaps a UTE style with those colors?)
enjoy it immensely!! |

Location: Phoenix AZ | I'll write more about the CW-28 when I get a chance. Been too busy playing it. Not too many guitars out there would have prompted me to sell this Adamas. But the Collings is something special. There's "premium" guitars like Martins and stuff that are definately the cream of the crop. And then there is this Collings that just takes it to another stratosphere. Ironically, the seller (who knows a little something about guitars) was about to put it on the block because the bought another brand of guitar, for LESS money, that he liked the sound better. He strummed them both for me and looked for that nod of approval. I nodded alright, and couldn't get the words "How much for the CW" out of my mouth fast enough.

Location: big island | i am grateful to have a keyboard to type with because i am totally flabbergasted and speechless.
you folks wouldn't be able to hear me blubbering anyway and i wouldn't want you to see me in the midst of losing my composure.
my daughters, my wife and i went to visit my in-laws today after church as is our custom on Sabbath afternoons. we had just enjoyed a wonderfully fattening mixture of chinese and thai food. i'm lounging on the sofa talkin' story with my father-in-law. well...actually yellin' story cuz he can't quite get used to his new hearing aids.
my wife enters the room with a guitar in her hands and says, "honey, craig (her brother)just bought this guitar from a friend and would like you to tune it up for him". she is standing behind the other sofa and i do not have a clear view of what she is holding but i do recognize a carved headstock and 12 gold tuning keys. a split second later, i recognized the most incredible 12 string adamas i have ever seen and in the same moment discovered who the mystery buyer of dave's 1688 is. i cannot describe in words the shock, the surprise, the palpitations, the utter speechlessness, the overwhelming flood of tears as i realized my wife had set me up. it literally took me 15 minutes to utter any words that were intelligible as i'm splattering the top of the guitar with salted tears of pure elation as it is resting in my lap. i can't even think about playing it yet as i am being encouraged to do so by all the family. i'm just staring at it in disbelief. ok randy...let's get on with life here!
it takes me almost half hour to tune it with shaky hands and a tuner that keeps shutting off. (shut up glenn! :D )
Heavenly angels in chorus fill the parlor with the first strum and they hang with me as i cannot put it down for the next three and a half hours.
what an incredible instrument! what an incredibly blessed man i am to have such a wonderful wife. what an incredible "ass" i have been moping around the house since the day dave posted the sale was pending. what an incredibly generous and good friend dave has been in working behind the scenes
with my wife to make this happen. dave, please sense the warmth of my gratitude.
i discovered something else this evening: the reason behind my wife's less than agreeable attitude about me buying the takamine EF75. i plead innocent! i had no clue that i was about to experience the largest surprise of my existence.
and then, if that ain't amazing enough...she tells me i can still get the tak if i want to.
my elite 1537 is sold at my asking price leaving me without a nice acoustic 6 stringer. if God opens the door, and He has, i should walk through it, and i will.
what a day! thanks for taking a few moments to share in my joy. |

Randy, I'm thrilled for you and I'm so happy the guitar has not only stayed in the OFC, but has made it's way into your hands. When you told me that the guitar was so appealing to you because the tan and blue colors reminded you of the sands and skies of Hawaii, it almost brought tears to my eyes to have to inform you that it was sold (technically I was not telling a lie).
Congratulations my friend. Now, on to that Tak75. Your statement about God opening the door and you should walk through it? Nope, you need to RUN through it !!!
Happy Easter,

mahalo, friends, for all the kind sentiments posted so far on this thread this morning. i was not dreaming as i had suspected. i woke up and the 12 string is still here at the foot of the bed all snug in its case. my wife did draw the line on where she would allow it to sleep! |

i have not played THE guitar today, yet...
i've been working at the church nearly all day from early this morning painting and laying sod. when i got home it was time for my daughters to nap. our house is so small, my instruments have to share their room. but when nappy-poo is over, lookout neighbors! the few neighbors i have are all over three hundred yards away, but i am planning on trying out the OP PRO on this baby through my marshall this evening. i'm gonna let 'em know there's a new kid in town. :D |

Wow!!! I go away for a few days and look what transpired! You indeed are a very BLESSED man.
Mrs. Lanaki, you are a very fine person. Not for just giving your husband a fine guitar, but for recognizing something, that someone special, found to be very special.
In an unrelated e-mail message last week, Randy stated to me "i know i will get a 12 string deep bodied adamas I or II one day though. now those have gotta be the best sounding, easiest playing 12 stringers on the planet." Little did he know how soon this would come true.
Good things happen to good people! Randy, I am referring to you having a very special spouse!
With that said, Let's SEE IT AND HEAR IT! :D :D :D Just can't stop grinning for ya!

Location: big island | this guitar is magnificent in appearance, sound and playability. i have two issues with it:
1) the suspension ring is quite uncomfortable to rest my arm on while playing. a smoother one would have been nice. long sleeves would help but long sleeves in hawaii ain't right.
2) the OP PRO does not automatically cut the signal when in the tuning mode, which sucks for gigging. the guitar holds tune very well but i know there will be days when i will have to tweak the tuning on stage.
my first gig with it is tomorrow (wednesday) night at the fairmont orchid in waikoloa. i'm really looking forward to playing this one. i may have to devise some padded device or wrap my upper arm with an ace bandage. it may not be as much of an issue standing up to play, but sitting down is. |

LOL - I was just in Tahoe and Anaheim 2 weeks ago with the family for vacation and the 2 hour drive from Sacramento to Tahoe killed me. Anything over a one hour drive for this island boy is LOONG - especailly after a great burger at Ikeda's in Sacramento. As we say in Hawaii, Kanack Attack!
As others have mentioned, we'd love to see a video. Ever try slack key on a 12? |

it seems all the gigs happen on kona side where the posh resorts are. saddle road (more like "straddle road") and i have become quite well acquainted. i lived several years on kaua'i, several on o'ahu and a few on maui. the big island is a whole 'nother concept in island life. it is too big for me. i'd rather be back on kaua'i and perhaps, one day will be. |

the number one vacation destination for people who live in hawaii is las vegas.
there are many, many people from hawaii now living in las vegas, which we jokingly refer to as "the ninth island". it is tragic that locals cannot afford to live in their own homeland. vegas was attractive for its jobs and affordability. the hospitality industry is one that many locals are familiar with anyway so it was a good fit. i guarantee you that just about every one of those families would jump at an opportunity to come back home if conditions would allow it. |

yes, slack key can be played with a 12 nicely. gabby played his martin 12'er and roland cazimero also plays slack with his adamas 12 and his custom double neck. i have not attempted with this guitar yet but will soon. i have played it with the dropped D and it is awesome!
the guitar is definitely more comfortable played standing since the arm angle is different, the suspension ring is not an issue. a few minutes ago, i attached my new, official, "Ovation Fan Club" strap to it and stood up to play. i'm relieved about this. however, the OP PRO still works the same way as when seated. go figure! |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Lanaki, I totally understand. We have a similar challenge with folks who live in and near the ski resports here in Colorado, particularly the upper end destination resorts. Those who work the resorts cannot afford to live close enough to affordably make the commute. The resort owners must provide housing, but it is not easy. The charm of some of the older areas is slowly losing out to development and extremely wealthy home owners. But enough about that, when will you be issuing invitations for the first annual OFC Island Jam? I was actually thinking about putting together a combination ski trip/Rocky Mountain OFC jam earlier this year. |

what "rounded edge"? the binding, which i guess is what is also referred to as the suspension ring on the adamas I, being ornate rather than smooth, is rough on the tender skin of the underarm. as i said, it is not a problem when standing up and as paul said, i am sure i will get used to it otherwise.
it is painfully worth it! :p |

I have no idea how this is supposed to work, but it might protect your pits.
pit protector
Maybe you can get the Woodmeister to make you one out of Koa!

:p great idea, grif, with one exception. this product is supposed to increase the volume and tonal output of the guitar. if the 1688 had more volume and tonal output it would set off a volcanic reaction here on the island. Pu'u O'o vent would blow it's top!
seriously, one done in koa would be excellent and would actually contrast nicely with this guitar.
aloha woodster...are you listening? |

Location: big island | played another gig last night at the grand ballroom of the hilton waikoloa. got paid $50.00 per song*. it was a convention for a company called "intermec", which i had never heard of before.
the 1688 sounded absolutely amazing. got wonderful compliments from several other pro musicians.
*only had to play two songs though. |

Location: Brentwood,TN | Congratulations on the 1688! I had that custom built last year and Tupperware took her off my hands when i realized my doubleneck order had to be paid for....it is one of a kind and I think the "outie" epaulets are far from "gay"...it is a bad 12 string! Again....Congratulations! |

it's great to hear from you. i don't think you've posted since i have been on this forum, if so, i missed it.
i am so stoked with this guitar. excellent custom order. i did, however, cover over your name on the label with something my wife made in order to make it all mine! the compliments i am getting from other pro musicians are numerous.
what kind of doubleneck did you order?
i noticed you are right in the middle of music country. i have been through brentwood. sweet!
edit: i did a search and found your doubleneck info. no need for redundancy. awesome, chris! |

Location: Brentwood,TN | I am glad you like it! I had 2 other 1688's made before yours and without a doubt the color of yours came out great! I had a doubleneck in Cherry Sunburst finish with a lot of bling added to it! It is a monster! I maybe letting it go soon also...let me know if you may know someone interested in her! I have pics in my gallery. |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | I've never had a problem with arm discomfort riding on the edge of any guitar, but I am very sensitive to the rubbing and wear caused by my forearm contact. This is the reason I now wear long sleeve shirts whenever I play out. Another habit I have is resting my little finger on the pick guard or other surface (sans pick guard) when picking arpeggio style. After a while, this really smudges up the area below the strings. |

Location: Colorado Springs, CO | Wow, What a great story about your new guitar Lanaki. I just joined this site yesterday after being made aware of it by Bill while posting my adamas on ebay. I showed my wife and it made her her start crying. She thought it was so wonderful. She loves your video. We live on Long Island New York and have never experienced Great Hawaiian Music until now. Thanks to you we are more enlightened about it and you were cross referenced on youtube with Ledward Kaapana. We never heard of him. He is a great master and you have opened up a whole new world of great music for us. Thank you and Congratulations with your new adamas. When I first saw the posting of the guitar for sale I wanted it too and showed my wife. Then I found out it was sold. Then I found out you recieved it as a gift. Great Story !!! |
