Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | Just thought some of you might be interested in my latest find from EBay land...An '89 TS-01 Thunderbolt with a Snakeskin top in what appears to be white and black w/some blue. I have seen the red and blue snakeskin’s but this one is new to me. Anyone else have any info? I have researched the posts from past and it seems that there were perhaps 50 w/snakeskin tops but how many in each color and how many colors is still a mystery. I know the headstock is somewhat weird (very 80's) but these are really great playing guitars: a friend had a black one and it sounded just as good as my 1988 SSB Black Elite and had fantastic stage presence! Well, I am jazzed as this is my second find in a week (the 87 Collectors is due here by Wednesday (if UPS is kind and gentle) so I'll post pic's of both as soon as I get them cleaned up, diapers changed and ready for the public to see! I will also post some of the pic's from my 30+ years of owning Ovation guitars for you to enjoy as I cry in fond remembrance!

Location: Latitude 39.56819, Longitude -105.080066 | I had several TB's over the years, red, blue snakeskin, white and they were all fun guitars.
Never cared for the unplugged sound since to my ears the SSB's are a little thing sounding....but plugged in, the TB-01 was a cool guitar to play and ALWAYS got comments.
I was watching that B/W one with interest. If as described, you got a nice deal. |

Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | Thanks very much! I just spoke with the previous owner and it ships in the morning...I feel like it was a really good deal. I think we are about to see Ovations start to increase in value as collectables in the true sense of the word. I have a hard time justifying the prices of 60's and especially 70's guitars from the big three, but like everything else, it is fueled by demand. So, I can at least count the ones I owned and played; those that I earned my living with for so many years, and hope that someone else is enjoying them now as much as I did...and I have been blessed to be able to acquire a few others which are very special. Thanks for the input and I did really like the pic's of the Blue Snakeskin that you owned. Looking forward to mine!

Location: Keepin' It Weird in Portland, OR | I believe that I saw that snake-skin. The one I saw had close-ups of the finish, and it looked pretty awesome!

Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | Only one I've seen on EBay...I'll post pictures as soon as I get it in. Supposed to be in really nice condition. I am surprised I never heard about this finish when it was available...I have had a serious number of Ovations over the years, and was an endorsee in 1987-89. I still have my Ovation World Tour Jacket..needs some TLC around the cuffs but it holds a lot of memories. Ahh, back in the day....lol!

Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | Hello again all. As I mentioned in my posting about the 87C that arrived yesterday, the T-Bolt TS-01 Snakeskin arrived as well. Please feel free to check out the photos.

changed and ready for the public to see}
Well the 87 C is near mint and needed nothing! The Snakeskin was a different story. Very dirty! It had old (as in rusted) electric strings! It does have several issues that I will probably have the mother ship address: two long finish cracks on the left lower bout (viewing from the top) and the t-bolt epaulet is a little loose...the finish there is cracked as well. It did clean up remarkably well however and I put a new set of Elixir's on. The action isn't too severe, but I'll be adjusting that today. The headstock isn't bad either. But the worst issue is that some wanna-be luthier re-glued the original nut and used half a tube of super glue; which wasn't cleaned up properly and did eat into the finish behind the nut. It is not an unfixable issue and I am confident that the mother ship will make all as new again. I need to call for an estimate. Now, do I hear someone saying already that “it's just a T-Bolt and not worth it”? Granted, its not one of the best models; although it does sound good plugged in, and as expected when unplugged – somewhat thin: it is a SSB. But, this is one of the rarest guitars Ovation has ever made and I am sure in a few years will be worth whatever it costs to repair those few appearance issues. Take a minute to look at the photos: the graphics are really eye-catching and look at the photo of the signature of the artist hidden in the graphic work. The case is an original T-Bolt case with a small indentation for the headstock point. It is in good condition and all latches are intact and work great. One small crack from a drop somewhere in its life...also one of the chrome button feet is pushed into the case a bit...but hey, we've all got scars. I feel it is worth the price I paid which was a fraction of the original price for the guitar. Add to that the extreme rarity and it’s a nice piece; abet not on the level w/ my 87 C but a good exotic for the collection. One week: two rare guitars. I am a blessed man. |
