Go for it, Randy. You'll want to sell your w597.

i'd have to sell it first, john. i wonder if this vintage one would sound as good plugged in as the W597? i have yet to play a deep-bowled woven top adamas...

Yes. The 2-knobber FET preamps sound great.

I disagree with John. The 2 knobber technology is 30 years old and to my ears, sounds like it. Almost everything from the OP24 forward sounds better.

But there's a unique opportunity if it still exists (and I would guess that it does). Ovation went back a year or two ago and redesigned and rebuilt the 2 knobber preamps for the Adamas I reissues. They're going to use it for the OFC guitars as well. This means updated circuits and technology and a much much better sound.

Buy the 2 knobber Adamas and send it directly to the factory to have the new electronics put in it. It would be worth the money.

Sorry. The gloss-top Adamii are very nice guitars, I just really feel the texture-top deep bowl Adamas I's and II's are superior to them.

Acoustically, I agree with you John. But when it comes to the preamps, old is old. I realized this when I was playing next to somebody who had an LR Baggs undersaddle p/u in his guitar. It sounded so much better than my 1537......

i have seen the re-issue currently on eBay and the starting bid is $1K higher than this vintage one. i like the idea of upgrading the electronics, paul.
i am not content with the 597 acoustically, although i agree with stuart miller that it is well balanced over the spectrum. it sounds best when fingerpicked, however, it lacks volume.

this server seems to be getting worse. anyone else notice?

Deep bowl textured top original (or reissue) Adamas 1's and 2's are the cats ass. Period. Yes there is a place for all the smooth topped stuff, but it ain't at the top of the ovation food chain - sorry.

2 knobbers sound good, but many show their age. Especially the jacks get very iffy. If it were me, I'd replace it with reissue 2-knobber because the holes are already there. To me the more modern electronics, such as Optima are way better. I just sold an Adamas I with OP-Pro. THAT was one of the nicest setups I've ever seen.

Lanaki, when it comes to preamps, get the newest you can. Dave's right about the old textured top Adamii being so good. So are the reissues. Putting new electronics in an old textured top Adamii is the best.

Just to give you an example, my GC 1627 RI has a redesigned stacked volume/tone control. It is absolutely the best plugged in guitar that I own, beating the snot out of my old 2 knobber 1537 and the several guitars that I own with the OP24.

You know, you and I got off on a slightly bad foot politically, but I'm real sorry that you're not coming to CT next month. You're a good guy and I'd like to drink a beer or 7 with you....

paul,
are there any "good" political feet?

i appreciate the sentiments. i'm certain i would have a marvelous time hangin' with you and the rest of the gang. 7 beers would only lead to political gibberish though, i'm afraid.

You should submit it for the next OFC CD!

I think it might be just to see a 1537 in action until I get mine. :D
Just kidding, you're a gifted player.
Looking forward to seeing more, maybe with other guitars in your collection.

Or leave it be and use outboard gear. The new Fishman Aura pedals are essential an outboard VIP preamp. OK, they're not Ovation-specific but they do a very similar job. There's a ton of other stuff that you can use without having to do it all onboard. An old single-knob FET3 guitar can sound amazing with the right processing.

I contacted John B. at the factory about the cost for installing the new 2 knob preamp from the Adamas reissues, he said they are exactly the same, no updated electronics.

They can do anything! It's only a paint job anyway, but why would you want to loose that beautiful blue top?

Hey, Lanaki. Just been lost in a sea of other stuff going on now. My computer time has been limited. Also been lurking over at WGF. I'll try to get around here more often. Thanks for asking.

Thanks, got it with me! Back to the 1681. As many of you know I have tried and turned over several (many) diferent Ovations from the Applause through the Celebs, then on to the "real" Ovations, and on to the Adamas line. My last one that I bought then sold was the ute, which I thought would be the end of my quest to find the best feeling and sounding Ovation product. To be honest, I found the 1681 to be better, IMHO than the ute in playability and sound. I even sent it back for a complete refurb which included a new neck, which was costly, but I now have basically a new Adamas that is the one guitar that I will NEVER get rid of, regardless of the age of the electronics. For me, it is the perfect guitar, and even a few Taylor fans that have played it think its better than theirs, which is something considering the loyalty of their fan base. I think someone should jump on this one.
