Hey guys, I'm selling a Melissa Etheridge signature edition 12 string for a friend of mine (who's not computer savvy). This guitar was adult owned and has only been played for a total of about 6 hours. He bought it in 2005 new, and never got used to playing the 12 string. He's selling this to buy a Taylor.

The guitar is in 100% new condition with a hardshell case and all paperwork. It is an acoustic/electric with the OP-24Plus C electronics with the built in tuner. The finish is a dark cherry sunburst which is immaculate. The guitar still has the original strings which are in great shape (which tells you how little he played it). There is no model # on the sticker, it just says "Melissa Etheridge Signature Model" with her signature on the label. The serial # is 17505.

He is asking $2000 for it. Please let me know if you're interested or if you would like pics. If you're serious and would like to talk to him, I can also pass along his email.

aloha rachelsdad!
welcome to the OFC. i wish luck to your friend in selling his ME 12, however, his asking price is a bit high based on what they have been selling for on eBay. they show up there quite frequently. i am not in the market for one but i have seen them in near mint to mint condition sell for $1350-$1700. although the one melissa used on tour and donated to charity sold for just over $100,000 a few months ago!

I haven't seen too many of the 12's on there, the last one I saw was around $1800. I appreciate the input, for now (since I haven't talked to him) we'll say $2000/obo.

It isn't really my place to tell you what you should be pitching it at but I think your friend is pricing it way too high for that model if he wants to sell it any time soon. You might get lucky on Ebay with a bidding war but on the whole I would think you need to advise your friend that he needs to think more like $1,500 top end.

I sold an immaculate ruby burst one one on Ebay 6 months ago and only got $1,395. I also know a certain dealer associated with this board that has a second hand 1598 MEII (black one) with the OP pre amp for around that mark too.

Of course you have the right to advertise for what you think and YMMV. Good luck.

I'm confused about this guitar. It was bought new in 2005. But the serial number dates it to 2001. And it has OP24+C electronics, which are circa mid to late 90's. OK, hey as long as it all works who cares how old or new it really is. Still has the original strings from 2005, or 2001, or whenever. Now your friend who can't type is selling it to buy a Taylor, god only knows why. Hey, maybe take the original strings off this Adamas and put them on the Taylor?

Hey, sorry to poke at you like this. But man this really sounds odd. And why is it that so many musicians buy expensive guitars and only play them for 5 minutes in 10 years and are never able to master a computer keyboard well enough to sell their own shit? Not only did your friend have to coax you to sell it for him, but he put you through the trouble of actually having to sign up to this forum specifically to do the drive by. I hope you're getting a piece of the profit.

Believe me, it would THRILL me to see this guitar sell for $2000. Compared to other guitars, like a Taylor, it's more than worth it. But the decade old electronics and 2-5 year old strings would be a turn off for me, considering that you can buy the same model guitar brand new right now for $1895.

I've seen plenty of guitars be built and then sit in music stores for several years before being sold. My Adamas I 12 string was built in '94 but I purchased it new in '96. The electronics sound about right for a guitar built in the early 00's.

But I agree with Dave about people who buy expensive guitars and then claim they were never really played. If I get a new guitar, hell, I'll play it 20 hours in the first few days.

What do you mean in the first few days! 20 hours in 2 days max!! And those are business days!
:D :D :D :D

When my 1537 comes back from the factory, I'll play it so much I'll have to send it back for another fret job.

My 2001-vintage MERB1598 Melissa Etheridge 12-string is serial number 185xx, and it DEFINITELY has the OP-24C.

My guess is that he bought it NOS in a shop in 2005 and it had been sitting there for 3-4 years.

Best of luck on selling this...but $2000 is quite high, IMHO (I paid $1650 for mine NEW). $1300 to $1500 is ballpark.

Hey, I got into a bidding war and paid $351 for a 4861! and I see them go for much less.

But it's alright... I like it! And I've gotten good deals since. YLYL

Dave
To the others who have posted on here with HELPFUL information, thank you, I appreciate the advice on the price.

As far as dave (tupperware) here is concerned. First, I'm not going to go into a pissing match about ovation vs. taylor. They are both well made guitars with very different sounds and appeals.

Second of all you know NOTHING about my friend. The fact that I'm doing him a favor by posting on here is none of your business. You stated TWICE, and quite rudely, about his "innability to type or master a keyboard". He is an older man, a career firefighter and is worthy of a little respect, especially from a punk like you who doesn't even know him. And NO I'm NOT getting a "piece of the profit". Some people do things just to be nice and help out a friend.

Third, my point about the strings was how clean they are which would be an indication of amount of use. It was not a selling point. If the electronics being a few years old is a "turn off" for you, then don't make an offer! I'm pretty sure that's not why you posted anyway.

Again, to everyone else, I'll let him know that he needs to adjust the price. I think I'll just put it up on ebay, then maybe I can avoid future "helpers" like dave.

RachelsDad.

I think you just caught Dave on a bad day. He's one of the most helpful guys here. It seems that the price people are getting for Ovation's is experiencing a bit of a dip. I would advise your friend to hang onto his ME 12 until after the tax season purge of guitars is over, then he might get a little better price.

Stick around, Dave can be a dick, but then, so can we all. :D

I have to admit I was really shocked ready what Dave wrote to RachelsDad! I've never seen him like that! hahahaa He must've had some of the RED kryptonite when he wrote that or "really" thought he smelled a fish! In any case.. I suggest you give Dave another chance.. he's without a doubt one of the nicest guys here on the boards from my experience! All the best selling your friend's ME or also, I agree, have him sit on it until after tax season... maybe try eBay closer to the holidays.. that's usually a home run for me. All the best.. Gob bless! Michael

Dear RachaelsDad,

I have reread these posts over and over. It was not my intent to make any charactor assasination against you, nor your friend. God bless him for being a fire fighter. Maybe I was too quick to group you in the pack of dozens of previous 1st time posters who introduce themselves to this community by hawking gear for a friend. I apologize for jumping to the conclusion that your reason for joining the OFC was to turn a fast buck from a captive audience.

I made a snide comment about Taylor guitars. It's my personal opinion - I think they suck worse than dead donkey dick. This is a fan forum and we get paid for expressing personal opinions. Sorry, but if you choose to stay around here you're going to have to live with other peoples opinions.

Kudos to you for helping your friend sell his guitar. As I said in my post I will be thrilled if he get's 2 ger for it. That would be a credit to what fine guitars they are. I'm pulling for you.

If you would like to consider me a disrespectful punk, that's fine. If you knew me you'd see the humor in it. I know what I've contributed to this society and I'm at peace with it.

Dave

Group,
We all have our bad days; I certainly have my share as well. But as both a longtime Ovation owner/player/endorsee who also happens to have a few really wonderful Taylor guitars as well, why stick it to Taylor? Do you own one? Have you tried the new expression system? Sure, they're expensive. But they play and sound good enough to cause me to abandon my '69 D-28 to the point I sold it. I really don't care if someone personally don't care for Taylors, but why not keep it to yourselves? There are others who dolike them and have that right. This world is tough enough and needs us to be helpful to those who either need help or lifting up. I do appreciate all the knowledge and in my humble opinion, this forrum has some of the most generous people ever; in a cynical world, that really says something. Different strokes for different folks. Its a great big world; many many guitar players both new and old, and quite a few nice guitar makers in their own rite. Ovation/Adamas certainly are and Bob Taylor makes a mighty nice axe as well. Lets all just calm down and be nice to each other. Really, Life is short folks. I have been at VA TECH for the past two days speaking with students and I go back on Friday to speak with emergency workers and police. Believe me, kindness goes a long ways!
Blessings and Peace!

I wish I had a Taylor. I almost got a 12 instead of the 6756LX, but didn't have the money. If I could afford it I'd have a few. I think a lot of us here think that Taylors are a lot buck for the bang when compared to our humble O's, but to say they 'suck worse than donkey dick'? Come on!

IMO, the taylor big baby is the only model that i thought was a lot of bang for the buck. having owned 4 high end taylors and the big baby, it was the only one i kept for any length of time. sold it just recently to get my wife a new sewing machine.

Mike,

I can't speak for the group, but I believe the general attitude towards Taylors is due to the mutual distain displayed by AGF Taylor owners towards Ovation's.

Myself, I have an open mind, but haven't played a Taylor that I liked better than the O's I have or have owned, all priced significantly less than any Taylor I've played. They are nice guitars, just a lot of $$ for the privilage.

I did play a Martin last week that floored me, but it was priced at $6400. That was the first one though.

There are lots of great guitars available, I've just become partial to the O's. Can't explain with any particular event or experience, but here I am.

Hey, come on guys. You know I don't really hate ANY guitars. Mike hates beets, I love raw onions. That's the beauty of this place, we all have our personal preference. Maybe the dead donkey dick comment was a little over the top, but the fly-by threw me a hanging curve. How could I NOT jump on it. My son plays a Taylor Big Baby and I am really impressed with it. Unfortunately no other Taylor that I have yet tried has really spoken to me. Maybe some day one will. Hey, I LOVE ukuleles and you know what? 99% of the rest of the human population hates them. Does that get me all in a tizzy? Hell no.

I agree with you on most points to be sure: I earned a large portion of my living for over 25+years on the road playing Ovations: That’s why I am still playing and enjoying them today: I have a nice collection (praise to God) of instruments that I enjoy as well. So, as I stated before, to each his own and I choose to keep and open mind. That said, I will put my 98 615 Brazilian Taylor (I bought it for $2400 in 1999) against any Martin I have ever played even my friends '46 D-28. It's about sound and playability for me: I wasn't happy when Taylor forbade large market stores from advertising them several years ago: but I understand their reason to let the small shops have a fair chance to seel product. Gibson is doing much the same thing today except they are catering to Guitar Center and Musicians Friend (one and the same). But I will still own and play what I particularly like and can afford. I wasn't always able to do that; I wasn't always able to own Ovations either. I was glad to be able to when I could and have continued for nearly 30 years now. But I understand: Chevy owners usually don't like Fords and visa versa! Competition and opinions are the spice of life I guess. It's cool...just glad I don't have to make all the decisions for everyone: just my family and myself..

Now I understand why she got you the Adamas! You are a better husband than I am. I was thinking the other day about how much I spent on a piano and electronic keyboard for my wife and kids and decided I wasn't such a bad guy after all. The OFC guitar is going to put me way over the top, though.

Absolutely not. That would be incredibly childish. I couldn't care less what a bunch of geeks on another message board think about Ovations. My attitude to Taylor is that they are exceptionally well made, great looking guitars that sound mediocre at best. Until lately I haven't heard a Taylor that I would want to own, though the new GS series are quite impressive.

I just read thru this entire thread for the first time. The only reason I can think of for RachelsDad calling Dave a punk is that he's quite familiar with Dave. Probably lives next door to him and knows that he loves ukes.....

As for Taylors, they're not bad guitars at all. Just too much money for what you get. I've played a few Taylors that I thought were worth a few grand. Unfortunately, they were priced at $4-5 grand. I have nothing against Taylors. They are just not for me.....

I've said this before. I'm going to sound exactly the same whether I play an Ovation, Silvertone, Taylor or whatever (shut up Clifford, Temp, Tup, etc). The music doesn't come from the guitar, it comes from the person.......

I have yet to find a guitar that I hate. There are many that I have chosen not to purchase but never hate. There are many varieties of people so there needs to be many varieties of guitars. Not every guitar is for every person. There is no need to hate guitars, just don't buy the ones you don't like. BTW I just love my Taylor 814-CE and didn't care much for the Taylor 314-CE that I just sold; but the person buying it is very happy with it. I chose to buy Taylors over Martins because I like the Taylor sound better than the Martin sound and I love the Taylor necks over the Martins ; but I don't hate Martins, I just won't buy one. I'm happy others like them.

I love the sound of my Ovation 1858LX 12 String; I'm sure there are many here that wouldn't buy this guitar; but Im still enjoying it.

Regards,

Tom

Sad state of affairs when such a nice guitar only sells for $900. even with out a case. I hope Rachals Dad got the $2000. he was asking for the one he was selling for Fire Marshall Bill.

The amazing thing to me is that someone with as much gear as Dr. Tom would actually KNOW the list of stuff they had. I'm guessing Dr. Tom is a shrink, right ???
