I was thinking about remakes or covers of songs that are as good or better in their own right as the original... a few that came to mind were:

-Dixie Chicks "Landslide" (orig. Fleetwood Mac)

-R.E.M. "Pale Blue Eyes" (orig. Velvet Underground)

-Gillian Welsh/Old Crow Medicine Show "The Weight" (orig. The Band)

-The Feelies "I'm a Believer" (orig. The Monkees)

Muzza brings up a good point. I've heard numerous released covers, some illustrated by Damon67, that when you hear them, you think, "Why?"

I really like a cover song that puts a new twist or some different energy into a good song. I think I'd rather listen to good covers than 99% of the new songs coming out now.

Some covers that work:
Summertime Blues /The Who
Reason to Believe / Stewart
Bobbo / Right Field

Some covers that don't:
Behind Blue Eyes / some rapper guy whose name I can't remember right now.
Signs / Tesla... No twist. To faithful to the original
American Woman / Kravitz

There was a rumor over on the Who Forum that Townsend was going to cut an entire CD of covers. Sorry to say it's not going to happen.

And I'm thinkin' that at Amelia, Matt Smith said something about his next CD having a good number of covers on it. Covers with a twist.

to me, that is one of the greatest covers of all time because IMHO the original sucked.

My first choice would be "Hurt" by Johnny Cash also....

Another of my favorites is U2's version on "Satellite Of Love" originally by the Velvet underground.

Worst cover ever...

Let's be real. If anyone else would have turned that rock classic into elevator music they would have been lucky to only have been booed off the stage.

Reminds me of the time my teenage niece was in the backseat when McCartney and Wings came on the radio doing "Live And Let Die".

It got all the way to the chorus before she piped up and indignantly asked "Why is HE singing a Guns n Roses song?" :D

As I brought up Cash's Cover of "Hurt" - here is a great cover of a cover:

Sheryll Crow\'s Hurt: A Tribute To Johnny Cash

EDIT: ...although she mixed up the lyrics at the end of the song...

Speaking of Layla, I never knew that it's not Clapton playing that electric lead riff on the original. Duane Allman stepped in and played it. I don't think he even got credits on the LP.

Duane played slide on the instrumental outro, and I believe he WAS credited . . .

If y'listen to "Why Does Got t'Be So Sad" (on that same album), y'can hear D'uane all OVER that one . .

"Please Read The Letter" by Allison Krause and Robert Plant.

The original was written by Plant and performed on one of the Plant/Page albums but IMHO it really sucked.

The reworked version that is on the Krause/Plant album is fantastic and worthy of the Everly Brother type harmonies.

When's your next gynecology appointment?
With all due respect man ... is it necessary to go this low?
Absolutely Not....

But, I feel like most people theses days just don't give that little extra effort. I think it's laziness . . . or indifference.

I can give you a refund... or store credit.

Worst cover ever...

Eric Clapton doing Layla by Eric Clapton!!!! (Derek and the Dominoes)

Let's be real. If anyone else would have turned that rock classic into elevator music they would have been lucky to only have been booed off the stage.
Miles I thought I might be the only other guy who has ever said this! It is taboo to diss Clapton but I never quite got this version. I thought it might be popular enough to try and add it to my acoustic solo stuff but I just can't stand playing it or hearing it in this form.

RUSH's version of "The Seeker" is top notch live! Always liked Duran Duran's version of Thank you as well.

2 great remakes I just remembered and really like;

Kula Shaker\'s version of \'Hush\' by Deep Purple

and

Lynyrd Skynyrd\'s version of \'Call Me the Breeze\' by JJ Cale. Awsome piano solo.

"Pale Rider" was the worst remake.
And I'm a huge Clint fan.

The original was written by Plant and performed on one of the Plant/Page albums but IMHO it really sucked.

The reworked version that is on the Krause/Plant album is fantastic and worthy of the Everly Brother type harmonies.
I think most the album is full of remakes/covers/standards.

Every single one of them are fabulous! IMO

I think the credit should go to TBone Burnett for the overall feel and sound of the album.

The Hendrix version of Dylan's "All Along the Watch Tower". Lots of people still think that was his song to this day, it was done so well. !
