Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | Ever since I sold my original 1758-6 a few years ago, I have regretted it. I have such a history with that guitar; I met my wife while playing it on tour in Russia in 1996 and recorded and toured with it for 10 years: from 1988 until 1998. These with the white tops were made in such a small quanity that most factory archives do not even list the color in most references to this model. So when I saw this one come up for sale last week, I decided to watch it. Well, I won the auction and I am driving to Roanoke tomorrow or Wed. to get it. The best thing of all is the unbelievable price: here is the url: 1758-6 Ebay
These are such great guitars as all those who got a chance to play my sunburst one at the hotel lobby can attest to. It was meant to be I believe! I'll post pictures and give a full report as soon as I have it home! :D

Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | Sorry Arthur...I didn't know...with the new system of hiding identies on ebay its impossible to know who is actually bidding, and the same thing happened last week to me on the 47RI up on the bay...To be honest, I had no idea it would go as low as it did...my bid was way under what most other recent 1758's have gone for and I was surprised it won the auction. I expected it would go for $550 or so...I bid $400...There is a nice 1858-2 for sale on the bay: 1858 on the Bay Hope you find the one you want...again, my apologies!

It inspired me to get out my 12-string.
But I me still waiting on the next $300 1718.

Nice 12 at a "very" low price. I hope she turns out to be a real winner.
As for the "snake"... You put on a show for all to see what that guitar can do... Just out of the
"The Ship" hospital and you pushed it to the limit. I'm still shaking my head on that one.
Other will see it when the tour video hits the street.

I was watching your auction as well. Great catch!
And yours has no really deep cracks. I bet it cleans up just fine. Yep, eBay favours the buyer, rather than the seller, at the moment.

Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | Okay, lunch is over, guitar tuned, I have played long enough to get the strings stretched and so here is my report on this latest Jem from eBayland:
Condition: The guitar and case were filthy; possibly the dirtiest I have ever seen: the strings wee green and filth was everywhere: I doubt it has ever been cleaned. The case was worse: reflective tape all over the case: top, back ans sides. It must have been in Mardi Gras or something. Anyway, detuned and cut the strings off; took a damp cloth with mild soapy dish detergent water (very damp; not wet) and cleaned/washed the entire guitar, dried it with a soft towel and then used a light polish (very sparce application of Pledge Clean & Shine Orange to the CLOTH (not to the Guitar) and then working quickly polished and buffed w/dry side of cloth. Cleaned Headstock (you could have grown potatoes in back of the nut and bridge on this) and polished same. Same with the case except: used a brillo pad to remove excess tape residue and years of filth and paint from rough bumps/scrapes. FOR YOUR INFO: These black thermoplastic cases clean up almost like new with this technique. Took 30 minutes to remove mailing address labels from inside the guitar (even one on the battery box cover) and to remove an old homemade sound hole cover made from a piece of linolum and duct tape which had been afixed under neath the epaulets inside the bowl (only one was present: the tape residue from both is still there for another day). there is a small repaired 1 inch crack olong the right side of the bridge (can be seen in photo's if look carefully: it is sealed from the inside and is tight...may have the spot refinished at some point but purely asthetical and not a problem (there is evidence of an identical abet shorter one along the left side as well...it is also sealed.) Also just a bit of flacking of finish on the top of the headstock...not a problem, again just asthetics. (but actually one needs to look to see it up close). I restrung with Elixir's (Nanoweb 12-string light/.010 - .047), tuned it up and gave it a whirl...very nice sound and great action (the neck was straight...no attention required). The longer I play it the better it sounds as the strings settle in place and as per most 1758's: the sound is balanced, clear, can go from from wisper quiet to LOUD, and is capo friendly. In short: What a Great Guitar! Worth every bit of the $305.33 I paid for it. Here are the pic's:
Well, that's it for now...I will play it through the PA at church and then at the Southern Jamboree in Ashville on June 10th. Hope you enjoyed this as I sure did in getting it. I finally feel like I have my old friend back and safe with the family at last!

They switched near the end of the run, where the whites didn't yellow over time.
These later paint jobs were "brighter" with less pearl metallic.
nice looking piece. enjoy !

Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | Actually, this is the white pearl (6P) they used for the Elites: very few were painted with this color and most of them were in the late 80's: circa late 88 and 89; the ocassional white pearl tops were done later but were not catalogued after 1989 (the only year that the Elites were said to be available in this color.) All of them yellowed to some degree over time; this one is no exception (although it is whiter than some including my original late '88: it is the pearl reflection in the light (sunlight or stage light)that makes them appear bright white.

Location: Rocky River, Ohio | Understood and agreed,
but Ovation changed the formula that they used for the whites near the end of the campaign aroung 1990.
The only reason I know this for a fact is that I work for the company that supplies all the coatings materials Ovation uses. I actually work in the same building that they are produced in Strongsville, Ohio. (I'm sure I QC'd a ton of paint over the years that eventually made it to our guitars.)
PPG has been Ovation's supplier for as long as I can remember. Even their newer UV cured systems are purchased right from PPG Strongsville.
It was scary, there was a PPG refinish book in the R-D room on the 2007 tour. (right below all the hanging milestone guitars). I was paging through it, it was about 10 years old, and I found my name in it !!
It was an old training manual on how to apply our paint and maintain all the application equipment.
We can confirm from CWK about the reason for the change, but I always thought it was for ease of application and a more even appearance on the guitar top. I'm sure spot repairs were impossible with the pearl. Even new, the later whites were much brighter, using much more titanium dioxide than the earlier formulas.
I like them both, but always had a fondness for the earlier jobs that would yellow to a nice ivory, like a typical 86 collector.
either way, your 1758 is a keeper for sure! |

Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | Wow, all very cool...I wish you could see this paint though...it is just like the paint on my 88...and a tom of pearl…I'll try to take a picture of it in the room light...it is yellowed; my 88 turned from years of playing in clubs...tobacco smoke surely helped...But, thanks for the info...who knows...It is very unusual to find a 1758 in this color...actually only the 2nd one I have ever seen and I have seen a ton of them...but anyway, I am thrilled to have it and to be able to share it with the community...that’s what makes this club so unique...like a large family...plenty of dysfunctionality built in but...the love of Ovation and Adamas guitars keeps us anchored...I'm just thankful to be a part!

Location: Shotley Bridge, Northern England | Mike, Thanks for the pictures and description; one of the really enjoyable things about this board is being able to share the enjoyment of other members' successes, even at a distance. Erniewan is right: that IS a keeper!
I have to confess that when I first saw the listing I was completely unaware that these were ever made in that colour. I even wondered if someone had painted the guitar white! (hangs head in shame). Thanks to Erniewan for the background information.
You certainly have made a great purchase there; all the more so considering you originally had one of these rare beauties and can now recapture the enjoyment once more of playing it. Enjoy it.

Erniewan: Thanks also for the information...I looked for more info on this guitar...originally sold for $1575 in 1991 and $1399 in 1989 ($1349 in '88). The pearl paint is unique as I have seen the 86 collectors series 6 and 12's and that paint looks to be a different shade of white (like Gibson's artic white) although it also had pearl...ppg would know I am sure. Thanks again for the cool info. |

Let me know how it works (hint: keep an extra damp cloth to wipe off the extra soap from the brillo as you go...keeps from having a mess all at once..I just do a little at a time...I just looked at the Elites case and hard to believe its the same one I got yesterday morning.
