Location: SoCal | Interesting reaction to the post...and to someone who has been a strong member of the OFC. Don't believe that those who have seen the guitar would call it an "ugly guitar". The factory wanted close to $4,000 to build it from scratch.
Dan plays 12-string almost exclusively...he took his time to create a performing guitar. I am sad to see that he needs to sell it. A lot of us suffer from some loss due to carpel or other damage to our hands. Dan's problem requires surgery.
Obviously, this is NOT a Neil Diamond finish...for Dan, this is the ultimate in a guitar that maximizes stage presence, playing position, voice, amplification, and durability. The unidirectional top provides a good acoustic projection as an acoustic.
Not suggesting that anyone from the OFC buy it...however, whoever does buy it will have a unique and superb 12-string.
For those who like the shallow or mid-bowl, consider that this is rare, in outstanding condition, upgrade pre-amp - doubt if the Custom Shop will be able to make one again. If, after 1/01/08, they take special orders - doubt if you would get one for anywhere near the BIN. |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | I'd consider this if I hadn't recently purchased the custom Viper 12. The acoustic restrictions of a shallow bowl, if any, mean nothing to me as I always play plugged in. I have an 1866 shallow bowl 12 that served the purpose until I had GC sign it. Now it just sits in a stand on a shelf, so I ordered the Viper, which does get used. Incidently, somebody suggested a Janglebox pedal for the 12. Bought one and wow, what a wonderful effect! |

Glad you like it...neat little compressor.....when dialed in it really gives 12's that Rickenbacker jingle/jangle. |

But I can attest to a very interesting thing about supershallow 12-strings. Unlike 6-strings which I think universally suck with supershallow bowls (yes, some are better than others)something about a 12-string can sound really good in a supershallow. Brings out way more bass than a 6-string, and especially if you buster the treble side it's a really full sounding instrument. Absolutely a great gigging guitar.

I've never played a ssb Adamas 12 so I can't comment on the sound. I trust Tup's opinion there. But as to the appearance, I could never get past that.... |

A 12-string lends itself better to a ssb than a 6.
Sounds "chimey-er".
I gig with a ssb Legend12 & (w/the right settings) it sounds GREAT!
That, and it's just SO "comfortable".
Paul, Dave sold that black "Stealth" ssb . . . |

If anyone is selling I'm currently looking for either an SSB Adamas 1 or 2 12-string, or preferably a Viper 12-string. I'd consider a deepbowl Adamas 12-string also. Possible Deacon 12 to trade. |

Had to sound good plugged in and be impervious to environmental effects so he could take it on preaching trips. I'd say he got just about the perfect guitar for it. If I recall, I think it was sold for about $1000.

Speaking of ugly guitars.
I don't care how much the Adamas I-7 and Adamas 1-8 are worth, they should never leave the confines of your living room.
You couldn't pay me enough money to play one of those 1973 Ford Pinto Blue eyesores in public, unless I was forming a Neil Diamond tribute band.
Avocado Green would be a better look than that faded Powder Blue. |

i'd take this one rather than any blue / green top guitar.
I'd repaint the bridge and it'd be ok. |

If you're going to do something radical to the appearance of a guitar, accept the fact that some will like it and some won't. And that feelings will run strong both ways..... |

Location: Phoenix AZ | Hey Guys, can we please go back and re-read this thread and ask oursewlves what the hell are we doing? And I'll throw myself right in the guilty mix. It's not my job to police this place, but this is just wrong. A long standing member wants to sell his guitar. If you don't like the looks of it, then don't buy the fucking guitar, OK? Everybody has a personal opinion, and that's just fine. But to post disparaging comments in someone else's for-sale thread is extremely rude and poor taste. It's different if someone posts "hey, what do you thinik of this?" That's fair game, bring on the opinions. But dragging this for-sale thread into the mud is pretty damn childish. And to turn it into a tit-for-tat, well if you think my guitar is ugly, I think your guitar is twice is ugly... Jesus, how old are we. I'm not real proud of us.

Heck, that's what makes this forum fun. Don't pay attention to the thought police who are trying to make nice. If you really don't like the standard colors of the Adamii, well, that's a whole discussion unto itself and we should start a thread on it.
I've always believed that I don't demand that you love my guitars the way I love them. I hope, tho', that you love YOUR guitars the way I love mine.
And ignore the thought police, Dave, John, and Bill. They are mass murderers...... |

Location: Budd Lake, NJ | It doesn't really matter what any of us think-- what's important is that we wish Dan the very best with both the surgery and the sale; that's what matters most. I know it would be very hard for me to part with even one of my guitars, and if it were one like this one, it would be harder, because I'd know I'd probably never be able to replace it.
So Dan, for whatever it's worth, please accept my best wishes that everything will go smoothly in the days ahead, and I'll be praying for you, too.

I'm not a big 12er fan but if I were however, I would be interested in this one. I really like the look. It has a certain understated class.

(Paul - As far as being part of the "thought police" contingent, I've hardly laughed so hard in all my tenure here. Good God. Could you imagine the state of affairs that could warrant that...? Then I thought about your place on the "style police" contingent... ) |

I was going for the understated look but the only option the factory gave me at the time was to stain the epaulets and bridge as dark as they could, rather than spray them black.
They did a great job with the budget I had and did a lot of work for great price.
I'm not a collector so thankfully I don't really get emotionally attached to any one of the guitars I've owned over the past 20 years.
I'm kind of wierd in that I play only 12 strings.
I've bought and sold too many to remember, and in the process have learned what tops, preamps and bowls sound and play the best in a live amplified setting, with the acoustic unplugged sound being secondary.
I do know for a fact that every Ovation 12 string I've owned has had more than enough projection to fill a small coffeehouse, classroom, living room or church unplugged. |
