Many people here have several different guitars, and a number of people here have a lot of guitars. My question is, ultimately, which guitar is your "go to" guitar, ie, that instrument that meets the most of your needs. You'd be happy picking it up at home, or taking it to an acoustic jam, or to a plugged in situation.

For me, my 87 Collectors is the guitar that I'm happiest picking up for any of the above situations, with the OFC slothead (ding!) coming in right behind it. Both sound great acoustically or plugged in, look great, and feel great. I'm just a little more paranoid about caring for the OFC'er.

What about everybody else?

The OFC slothead IS my "go to" guitar and has made pretty much every road trip with me since I got it. I just carry it in the 9158 case and leave that shiny thing at home most of the time...although the 1688 is running a close second.

I like sharing the experience of OFC#9 with folks I meet and even Otto is now grooving to the wideneck it has!

Can't thank Alpep enough for sticking with it to make the OFC guitar a reality.

After the SSJ II though, I will always carry a set of airlocks with me. That OFC just loved humming in front of the mikes ;)

Norman B20(6) would be the one I would just grab offhand to figure something out from a CD or whatever; it doesn't have the sound that my 74 Ovation has but it's easier to play and more forgiving.

If I need to noodle up the neck a ways, the 1778LX, aside from that, 1537.

For unplugged playing:
1. L.A.V. 1187-7
2. 1187-2
3. 96 Collector's

For plugged playing:
1. 1687-9
2. MM 597
3. 87 Collector's

But wait, there is the U681T as well, and the Taks, and the 1581, and the EMSX, the CA, the 12 strings, the Josh White... And I definitly forgot the JL3, the best woodtop Ovation ever built...

Okay, let's say, I'll grab the L.A.V. 1187-7. That's all I need!

Best regards,
Kurt

Well at the moment, I pull out the W597 for unplugged work. And then if I'm playing plugged in I play the W597. Of course, if I'm going somewhere, I take the W597. Hang on, I've only got one 6er! Bugger!

I am loving the 1581 Adamas I picked up last year. It does it all, and very well. It really shines on humid days when my wood guitar sounds like a soggy catchers mitt.

First one I picked up when I got home was the Ute. Then the Folklore, then the OFC. Usually it's the OFC, but I usually try to play 3 or 4 different guitars every time I play.

I must admit feeling fortunate to be able to bring a guitar, almost everyday to work. During this time, I bring my beater - a U.S. made Martin DX1 that I acquired from a garage sale for cheap.

When I'm not at work, I often grab the Martin DM to play with friends and family ... even at gatherings out of the home, or outdoors (provided that it's strictly acoustic).

Plugged in, such as the recent event at the VA Hospital with Mitchrx, his son Andrew and fellow OFCer Phil Wong, I use my one and only Ovation - a 1719 Custom Legend.

It may not be the most precious guitar in the market, but I do tend to be overprotective, and feel paranoid taking the HD-28 anywhere. :o

currently, my go-to guitar is the 1687-9. as i was telling trader jim in an earlier email today, there's just something about the mojo and character (is that redundant?) of a 1978 adamas with charlie's signature in it especially when it plays and sounds like this one does. my takamine EF75 gets the second nod.

If the measure is which one do I play the most ... Takamine EF430 Singer Songwriter.

I've got much "better" guitars, but more often than not I grab this one. Believe it or not my second most played guitar would be the Academy KA17. I love that darn thing.

for me guitars are like tools and I try to use the best tool for the situation.

the Artist works fine for an acoustic rehearsal or duo gig, but an electric solid body or semi-hollow works better for my trio with bass and drums.

my Adamas II works nice in an acoustic jam with more than 2 guitars, plus makes all the guitar snobs wonder how can that non-wood guitar can sound like a D size, but it takes one banjo to change everything and for me if there are more than 2 guitars I rather play mandolin anyway.

a small club gig is different than a large event outdoors. sometimes even an ac unit or pool table in a club can kill your sound and it feels like 10 rounds all night. outdoors there is usually a large pa that you can crank up, etc.

that is why you need more than 1 guitar, there are many different playing environments.

The 1869. I've got the action dialed in just right, the top has opened up, and it just feels comfortable when you hold it. I also prefer the simplicity and get-it-done-ness of the Optima pre-amp.

I don't have just one favorite and I like to use different models for different purposes. I've even been known to use a certain guitar because it matches the shirt I'm wearing. That said, the Adamas 1881 is probably the one I typically grab most often for practicing in the band room and for rehearsals, and I use it often but not exclusively for services.

lately it's been the Tak Opry although that's not my first choice.

I still have to say that of all the guitars I have the one that always puts a smile on my face the fastest is the Tak 45th. The overall sound is just wonderful.

The 2080D is a close second

If I had to add a third it would be my 05 Tricone Cutaway.

I could live with those three, not very well, but I could.

It's hard for me to define "go to".

If I'm "downstairs" (which is where I do the most playing at home), I'll always grab the little Tak classical. It's small, lightweight, I can play it while sitting at the computer, and it's just a GREAT "songwriting" guitar.
After that, it's usually the LongNeck Adamas.

If I'm "upstairs", I'll pull the SlotHead down off the wall.
Playing that guitar always gives me a "chubby" . . .

Since two of the above are strictly acoustic (and one is a LongNeck) the CustomBalladeer is the one that usually goes out the door with me for a plugged-in situation, and gets played about 75-85% of the time at all my gigs.

Play it all the time, but if I had to go to just one guitar to meet my needs, the 87C would be it....

It was my 1537...until I got the W597....until I got the 2080....and soon it will be the.....oh wait, that's another thread and I haven't let the cat out of the bag yet.

I am a one or two guitar guy like other posters. Even if it's a fancy one, it will be played as my primary axe as I choose to spend money on other pass-times. (like $6/gallon AvGas...YIKES)

I've found that I like to rotate my "go-to" guitar. I'll stay primarily with one for a couple months. Then when I change it's almost like re-discovering the guitar all over again.

Yep, Brad's got it right.

If it doesn't excite me when I put it back in the rotation, then it is time to post it in the "FOR SALE" section.

Welcome back buddy. You been gone to long.

How's the family and the kids!

Glad your hand/arm is improving.
Thanks for the welcome. The family is doing great. The kids are now 8 and 6. I am back with my ex and we are on top of the medical bills. I've been away because not playing was depressing enough without reading about playing. Things got worse with my arm and I wasn't using it at all. With medication and physical theropy I've regained nearly the full range of motion. Though it still can be painful to move. It's getting steadier and I've gained great control of my hand. It still shakes and is not dexterious as it was. I can now play again and get better at it everytime I try. I been at it for the last two months.

While browsing for photos to upload, I found a photo of my 1718... "Gee, I haven't played that in awhile!"
The thing weighs a ton! (or at least more than its brethren) And it has fence-wire for strings (EJ17's), but it is a re-discovery.
Oh yeah! Cool Guitar...

True Beal but some people (ding) can't ever seem to sell or let a guitar go.

and that really messes up the 2 in 1 out theory!

At home, it's the black Legend. At the shop, it's the Morgan Monroe Bean Blossom. But lately, I usually grab my Deering banjo! I'm learning to play jazz on it. I was up 'til midnight last night exploring new chord positions. I'll never be as good as Bela Fleck, but I sure am having fun with it.

The hell with Bela, be like Allison Brown.
I've been listening to her a lot lately and she's f@ckin awesome, an excellent musician who happens to play banjo. The best of the Vanguard years is a good one. Bela's on some of it too.

I've actually played with Alison Brown. She was in Northern Lights many years ago. They are a great bluegrass band out of RI, CT, and Mass. One day at the Winterhawk festival in upstate NY, she and Alison Kraus were sitting on the hood of a car playing, and I walked up to them and said "Hey, I'm an Alison too, and I play guitar." Ms. Kraus said "Well go get it.", so I did and we played for about half an hour. Thrill of a lifetime!

Right now I pull out the one and only 1112 Balladeer purchased in 1976. It still has that magical sound that I fell in love with.

'Go-to' Update:

TJ's '97C now has a wide-neck go-to sibling; BT717's Folklore find!

I pulled out a ’93 Balladeer that I’m loaning to a broke just-graduated college kid. There’s absolutely no comparison twix the FL and the 1711. The Folklore has that mature full-range projection. In one word, SWEEEET!

If I can put her down long enough, I'll try a set of 'silks' on her next week.
