Location: Hot Springs, S.D. | It depends on the person. I know a guy who beats on guitars, and I won't let him use a pick. He scratched the daylights out of one of my guitars once. There is another guy who I had to stop in the middle of a song for the same reason. And there is a woman in this town who actually played so hard on my friend's resonator guitar at a party one night that all the screws came loose. Then she said "This guitar sounds like crap, let me borrow yours". At that point I put my guitar in the case and said I was just leaving.
Down here at the shop, I have to put up with people trying the guitars, and I cringe when they pull out a pick. I've had people grab them off the rack and smash them into the guitar next to it. I've had people grab bass guitars and plug them into guitar amps, or electric guitars plugged into acoustic amps. When it's not busy, I can keep an eye on them, but sometimes it gets pretty crazy in here and I can't watch them all. I have signs up, but no one pays attention. What's even worse is when people come in with their little kids and don't watch them. They start grabbing everything, and when I say "No Honey, you might break it.", the parents act like nothing happened. Don't get me wrong, I love what I'm doing, but when I have a nervous breakdown, CUSTOMERS will be the reason. |

It's a great way to stand back and face the guitars and equipment and hear what they sound like from that perspective. Of course he plays much better than me, so really I'm just fooling myself !! |

Between TR boy and Beggin, they seem to become enamored with any guitar I show up with, and I trust them too. Anyone I've met in the OFC family, I trust too. But,I had a "friend" come over once, said, "oh, you have guitars?" so I gave him my BCB LX to play. It was like seeing your girlfriend get beat up. This guy just beat the livin' shite out of it. That was the LAST time he's been in my house. Thank God the guitar made it through without too much damage. |

In the early 80's, my duet partner and I were playing at a club just off Music Row here in Nashville, when we got a surprise visit by Johnny Lee. Johnny was in his heyday at the time and proceeded to stay, and play, with us for the whole night. It was a total blast but we were all drinking pretty liberally that evening and an interesting situation unfolded.
We had been swapping my black Adamas back and forth, identical to one Johnny owned and used at the time, and by the end of the evening, he got it in his head the guitar was his own. Now it really didn't take that much convincing, and we parted on good terms, but for a short time there was tension and it became a funny folk tale that grew through the years none the less.
Two years ago I got booked at a weekend long event with Johnny outside of San Antonio Texas... first time I'd seen him since that night in Nashville, and it just so happened I had that same guitar with me.
I didn't say a word about it all weekend until the final, private, closing party where I accompanied him for several hours. In the wee hours, Johnny picked up my guitar, strummed a few chords, and said, "ya know, I used to have one JUST like this".
I busted a gut and told him the story.
Johnny is a sweet, fun guy, and when I got to the part where I explained that he'd once thought this particular guitar was his, he turned bright red and said "Oh lord... I didn't make an ass outa myself did I ?".
Before we parted company, I had him sharpie his signature on the blonde part of the upper epaulet, adding a new ending to an old story. |

Right now, downstairs, a 15 year old kid from across the street is playing my OFC slothead (ding!). I trust him to be careful but I'm also encouraging him to play. He's already a fine player and getting better day by day. Don't know if he'll ever be famous, but with any luck, he'll always love playing .... |

Once in the bandroom, guests can play whatever they want. No limitations whatsoever. Kids can be a problem, but they gravitate to the drum set, and they can do whatever they want there. |

Location: NJ | The only place that I normally "refuse" is at gigs.
Usually at every 6th or 7th gig, there's always somebody that wants to come up and play a song on my guitar.
I've NEVER in my life DONE that, and will only do so if I'm ASKED.
8 out of 10 times, the person is drunk.
9 out of 10 times, they suck.
My usual retort when a drunk staggers up and asks "Hey Man, can I play guitar?" is "Did you BRING one??".
When they answer "Well, . . No", I respond with "Well there y'GO! . . if only you'd BROUGHT one . . . ."
Then there's always the drunk that says "Hey! . . I play in a band . . ".
"DO YA'?? . . . then why are you stuck HERE on a Friday Night listening t'ME?? . . . .? |

Location: Hot Springs, S.D. | Yeah, it really pays to keep a used, but decent sounding/playing beater on hand. I have an old Yamaha in the shop that a guy brought in to sell. He doesn't play, but bought a used car and this guitar was in the trunk. When he brought it in and I took it out of the case, it had a big hole in the back where someone dropped something on it. So the guy said he was good with wood working and he'd patch it. Well, he did about as good a job as my 6 year old niece would have done, but the thing still sounds great and plays like a dream. So, it is now the "shop guitar". I can't sell it, but I take it as a spare to open mike, let those who come in to the shop without a guitar use it when those instant jam sessions materialize, and on bad weather days, let my students use it so they don't have to bring their guitars out in the excessive cold/heat/hail. |

Now I still have the 1121 that I had to glue that headstock back onto. I will never be able to sell it, but I still sounds awesome!
So, It's a Keeper, like-it-or-not.
And I have no real fear of anyone breaking it, since it is already broken. A little nick or scratch ain't gonna change that. So long as nobody hurts that fine top and fiberglass bowl.
And people that have played it are still impressed.
I still gotta glue-on that veneer Woody sent me and get rid of the contact-paper. And it is still a great sounding guitar...
(It currently out on a stand)
Am I the only one the Loves the ones that I repaired more than the rest?

There's no single answer for this one. I let my son play any guitar, but he can't take it out of the guitar room without asking first. If it's someone I don't know real well, I'll be right there ready to take it out of their hands. If they're flat ass drunk, then no freekin' way (people from Australia with Ultra GPs as collateral are exceptions ;) )
So...
Yes, sort of, most times, but with conditions. |

1) Their hands are clean and they're not drunk
2) They are young and really want to learn to play. Ya just can't do enough to encourage young people to love and make music...
3) They are better than me (which certainly ain't hard to achieve) cause standing on the receiving end of the guitar is a whole different, amazing experience and when they play up the neck it helps to even out the fret wear ;)

Location: 6 String Ranch | Let me clarify what the conditions are.
They have to respect the instruments and usually be good enough to make them work as they are supposed to.
The beer swilling crowd was fine.
On Wednesday night at the Frickin Mermaid I will not let anyone play the guitar. Don't need anyone sweating up my strings before I go on. Once I've played, I'll let someone use it if I know them and I know that their hands don't sweat much, I just might have to go back up and play again if I win something.
I've never had a problem, yet. Hope I don't in the future.
Now some guitars have gotten dented a bit but that was to be expected.
1. The silver long neck Adamas. I loaned it to Adrian for one of his North American tours. It came back fine but a bump or two, hey 6 months on the road, SOMETHING is gonna happen. Cliff has this guitar now and it's in really good shape, with the few "memories" of life on the road with Adrian
2. My 64 Firebird 5, Kal David can and does use this whenever he's in town. He says he put in a dent or two, I can't tell, but it's been onstage with him maybe 20-30 hours, again, something probably will happen
3.The guitars I loan Davis for the summer. If they don't get some scrapes and dents I'm pissed because that means they spent the summer in the case instead of being played every day.
