Al arrived back from the PNW gathering only to find an order waiting from me.

Of course that means something may be for sale soon....will it be the 2080 or the 1537....or BOTH????? We shall see...

Stay Tuned!!!

Probably so............ of course the proceeds from the V-strom sale seem to be equally divided between new furniture for the wife and my soon to arrive trinket from Al. Well soon is a relative term as I will be in torment for a week.

Pretty simple to deduce, my dear Watson. My first new guitar purchase ever. Always bought used before so this is a big one for me.

Jeff, I was (once again) almost able to meet up with you. A bunch of us are riding to Glacier next week. I voted to blaze down I-84 to get the drive to Spokane over with faster (and maybe lunch in Hermiston), but got overruled by those wishing to take 14 up the Washington side.
One of these days...

Hey....14 is a great ride and you can almost make as good of time as 84 if you can get past the trucks and motorhomes. You sure make me miss my Goldwing.

I'm just a bit ahead of you, Jeff. My first new guitar purchase was the Matrix in 1977 and the second was the OFC in 2007.

Lucky escape indeed.

And yes, Phil, mild bunch describes us pretty well. Luckily, "Bad Ass Biker" wasn't on my list at Career Day.

I'm with you, Mark. My first new guitar purchase was in 1973, followed by a second (replacement) in 1981, both Ovations, then a third from an on-line retailer in 2003 before I joined the OFC, and from thereafter on, only from Al.

My first was in 1973 as well. The second wasn't until 1996.

Okay....so it is not such a big secret that I can keep it. I pulled the plug on the 2008 collectors. Hope you guys are right about how it sounds, looks and plays. A lot of coin for me to drop on a guitar, but I play twice a week at church, plus other events and I do enjoy that one perfect instrument. The 2080 (once the bugs were worked out by Mother) has been a solid reliable instrument and I probably should have just stuck with it, but I just couldn't resist the 08 bling and beauty.

So....next Tuesday, I will check out the collector and if it is as good as you all say it is, I will have a nearly perfect 2080 on the block. If you have an interest let me know via email or PM. It has been a really great gigging instrument and I will probably miss it. I probably won't sell the 1537 right away, just because of the sentimental value of having this fantastic instrument all these years, but if that sentiment shifts over to the 08, then perhaps in a couple of months, I will change my mind.

Way to go, Jeff! I don't think you'll regret it, they really are amazing instruments.

Jeff, don't sell the 1537. It's a real different animal from the 08 C. You'll enjoy having two different but great guitars......

Now I'll have a better reason to stop and see you next time I get close to Hermiston. The next time will be with a UHaul full of stuff, but I might see if I could meet you at a truck stop for a comparison of the OFC and the 08.

Mark, I live less than 4 miles from exit 182 (also the cheapest fuel in the area at that stop). Let me know when you are coming through, you can either stop buy and I will treat you to breakfast/lunch/dinner (as appropriate) or if you need a place for the night you are welcome too.

I would love to see your OFC guitar. You can probably show me a trick or three, since I still consider myself a pretty unimpressive guitar player. It's nice, however having a congregation that doesn't know any better as they think I am okay.

By the way, are you moving your daughter, or did your wife throw you out at the last guitar purchase.

P.S. Wear that funky orange (or was it pink?) hat so I will recognize you. Of course if you come by the house, I won't have to worry about that.

The only problem I will have is getting SWMBO to stop if she thinks I want to buy another guitar. I fooled her last time. Several of our friends wanted to bet her that I'd come back from Seattle with another guitar. She wouldn't take the bet. I've sure been thinking about the Lost Art Koa a lot lately, though.
As far as teaching anything, I'm worthless. Buy Pete Huttlinger's Jim Croce dvd and you'll know more than everything I know. And that orange hat was a souvenir of the Charlotte Porsche Parade. I think the guy that was in charge had an orange Porsche. It works great as a signal, however.

I rode through Hermiston last Sunday late in the morning. The farther west you travel, the more expensive the fuel. Cheapest fuel anywhere was when I arrived home in Denver. If I lived antywhere that close to the Columbia, I think I'd have to buy myself a boat.

It has arrived. :D Got back from lunch and there was the large box marked Ovation sitting in a co-workers office. He is a guitar player too, so undoubtedly was hoping I wouldn’t miss it.

From what I have read from others, I knew to expect some variation in packing Augmentation from Al, but in this case, other than a shoe box, extra cardboard and those inflatable plastic cushions (no not dolls) it was relatively benign.

What was not benign was the guitar. It is totally over the top. I forgot a pick, so just did a little bit of finger picking until I get it home tonight, so this is not much of a review. I am not going to post pictures as I can’t even do as nicely as the last 2008 thread at that, however a few observations.

My first thought was that this was an upgraded case, yet the sticker on the end said 9158, just like that on my 2080, however the padding is thicker in places and more plush. The handle is also more thickly padded so apparently just upgraded the 9158 case.

When I first picked the guitar up, I about launched it. It is very light weight. My 1537 is like picking up a Buick, my 2080 seems like a feather compared to it. The 2008….yikes the thing must be stuffed with Helium it feels so light. At first I thought it was in the neck and headstock, but it is the body that is lighter than the 2080.

I gave it a cursory once over then sat, tuned it up and did a bit of finger picking. A couple of shims will have to come out, but it must have extra light strings on it (I use lights normally) as it has a fairly high action, but fingers easily. I am guessing by dropping a shim or two it should settle into a lower string height that I am used to and allow for my light strings. Fit and finish is first quality with no observed defects. I was anticipating a bit finer detail in the “artwork (gold enhancements)”, but that is a minor nit as you have to get up close to notice any anomaly. I think it is a stamped rather than carved artwork, but that is only a guess and it is probably not realistic to expect otherwise in this price point.

My first HUGE shock that I never noticed in the pictures before is that it has no access panel on the back. Huh?!? Having used that panel to change batteries on my 1537, then to swap out the electronics on my 2080, I was quite stunned to see no removable manhole cover. How do they deal with repairs? Remove the top? That struck me as very curious. I suspect this also accounts for a lot of the weight reduction in the body of the guitar.

I was very concerned about adapting to the tuners and wide neck, not having owned one before. But….the tuners were more natural to reach and adjust, and despite my having “smallish” hands, I found the wide neck to be way easier to play, especially finger picking.

The tone is way different than my existing and former Adamaii and Ovations. As everyone else has mentioned, it is highly detailed and effortless. You can hear the clarity of each tone individually, plus it just sustains into next year. I started with a W597, went to the 2080 and now the 2008, and each has been a marked improvement in sustain and clarity. It is not as loud as my 2080 or 1537, but again, this may have to do with the strings.

What would I have done differently? I think a 5 piece neck would have added the coup de grace for me. I love the feel of the 2080 and 2008 neck, but totally love the looks of my 1537 neck. Beyond that….I probably wouldn’t change a thing.

Well done Ovation and thanks Al for a seamless transaction.
 :)

One thing I forgot to mention, and thought I would check with the other 2008 owners, there appears to be a slight difference in the application of the finish on the lower bout between the bridge and tail. It is just a hair different shade of black that appears to be somewhat "dull" compared to the rest of the black finish. Anyone else noticed this. I will put some polish on it tonight to see if it cleans up, but thought it was a tad unusual.

I vaguely remember an earlier discussion about this, but I thought it was more of a shiney spot on a dull finish, rather than a dull spot on a shiney finish. You might do a search and see.

Just took a break at work and pulled a shim (thing looked like a 2x4) and the action now easily rivals my W597 which was like a finely massaged electric.

No buzz (but again, no pick yet) with the action low, fast and smooth.

You are right....it was asked about in the post on another '08, but the conclusion was that they were looking at the pick guard. However, I see the same discoloration/variance, on Dave's pictures (it was Dave right? ) so it must be how they applied the finish.

Not terribly noticable, but you can definately see it.

It would be a tight fit, but perhaps they'd just pop out the preamp and the preamp can and work through there.

I think another reason for the weight reduction is that the bowl is made of fibreglass, not lycrachord, though I'm sure the manhole cover is extra weight.
