A lot of you guys hate the blue but it's one of my favorites, still. Unfortunately I gave my last one to my ex and all I have is these black ones now... |

Seems like a nice guy. He's selling the guitar for his mother-in-law. |

Is there anything in the pictures that looks like it could be a problem? He's offered to have a musician friend look it over. Any advice is appreciated. Please post it here, email me, or pm me. Thanks!

| kotadawg - that's a helluva guitar for $800. Assuming everything checks out on the up-and-up you could spend that much and do a lot worse. Personally, I'd take the chance. Even with some issues, a trip to the Mothership could fix them and you'd still wind up spending less than what these can sell for. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | You could do a search for 1581 in the For Sale section and find that the last couple years these have sold for $1000 to $1500 and the single epaulets without the treble sound holes seem to be more uncommon and desirable by those who prefer a bias toward bass. Or you could just believe what I just said, look at Waskel's pictures and go for it. Maybe one of our Portland members could take your money and pick it up for you if it is as good in real life as it is in pictures. After a short test period, they might even ship it to you.
I think if it was red, I'd have had my daughter in Portland buy it for me. Then we'd wait for SWMBO to try to figure out how she spent $800 on the credit card we gave her for "emergencies." At this price, I'd call this an emergency. |

Kotadawg, you could look a lot longer and do a lot worse than this one. I would grab it. |

My first Ovation was a 1581.
By serial number it's a 94 model and I bought it in 2002 NOS/demo from a music store here in Brisbane.
At a tag price of $4899 I'm not surprised it had sat around. I paid $2000AUD

Odd that after being listed for 3 days on ebay, the only bid was $1.. |

Location: GATLINBURG TENNESSEE :) | Good Luck Jack! I have one of those and it has an unbelievable booming sound. Every time I have played it in public or concerts i have had all kinds of people comment on how cool it looks and how great it sounds (despite my playing). $800 is a STEAL! Looking at the pictures I would say the fretboard just needs a good cleaning with woodsoap and re-oiling. Slap a set of medium strings on it and you are gonna be amazed! |

Location: Cincinnati | no, I didn't get it. I told him this morning I wanted to buy it. I just got back from a stress test and he said there was a bidding war on it. the price was higher than he had it listed for. someone on the East Coast bought it. I'm trying to find out what it went for. I'll just have to keep looking. I do appreciate everyone's help.

I apologize if I started the feeding frenzy. I wonder how many points I could have gained with SWMBO if I had bought it and sold it for more than I paid for it. |

Location: Cincinnati | Thanks, Mark. I've done that, but since I found out about the 1581 in this thread, I was waiting to see if someone here who had already contacted the seller was going to buy it. I thought Wabbit was going to buy it until he said for someone else to buy it. That's just the way I work.

Location: closely held secret | Sorry, Jack. The best rule of thumb is, if you want something, go for it. There's lots of guitars out there, sooner or later everyone gets what they're looking for.
If I plan (or hope) to buy something, I either would have said so (confidence) or said nothing (stealth).
And in this case it would have been gone, as I only live about an hour from the seller! |

In retrospect, I probably should have have got it. It was only $50 more than I paid for mine... :D |
