I'm probably going to put my Custom Legend up for sale on eBay. Thought I'd give a heads up to OFC members first.

I have had some issues with acoustic sound. Even went as far as getting a new saddle assemply from the factory. After going to 2 Ovation warranty repair places and being advised that the guitar sounds wonderful, I've come to the conclusion that I've been unfairly judgeing it against my Martin HD-28 for that full, rich acoustic sound, which is what I play these days. Plugged in, nothing can touch it. I just don't gig anymore.

If I do this right, you'll get a pic. If I don't, feel free to go to Eman* in the gallery to see pics. Here goes...

Just send PM and I'll get back to you. The guitar/case are all original (I'll include the original saddle which works fine).

As far as I know, I'm the original owner. I bought the guitar retail from a shop that bought out the inventory of another store that went out of business.

I didn't register the guitar and never bothered to go to the trouble with the factory when I lost the card.

As far as price, not sure what this will go for. I only found 2 on-line for sale. One was $1,500 +/- and the other was 1,999 UK pounds which I think is around $1,200.

Let me know if you have any questions via PM. I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Thanks.

Good luck with the sale. I personally prefer the Ovation deep bowl sound over the Martins, but then I like the balanced sound. The Martins tend to be bass heavy with no mids.

But you gotta please your ear. There's no one right answer (but why everybody doesn't agree with me is just unbelieveable!)

Hey Sleepy Bones,

I know what you mean about Martins. It's probably a hearing impairment that makes me favor a boomy sound. In fact, when I had the Ovation played "at" me, it sounded great. The limited sound that the ear picks up from above the guitar while playing is probably why the multi-sound hole Ovations sound better to me than the single hole models.

Anyway, I'm not getting any younger so I figured I'd reduce inventory and focus on what sounds good to "my" ears. Given the alternatives I think "ka-ching" would sound pretty good.

By the way, the UK pound conversion was as of a particular date. I know rates have changed but I'm thinking a reasonable "retail" price for this guitar would be around $1,200. Please share any price feedback with me. No reasonable OFC offer would go unconsidered. Thanks.

The Eman.

I don't want to be the price police, but I think that's a very fair price for a very good guitar. I love the sound and I think it has a very clear, crisp tone, including on the bass end. Mine's just a bit harder to play than the others that I have. If it had the action of my 1537 and the same tone it has now, I'd play it all the time.
I agree with Paul on this one. The thing I always liked about Ovations was the balanced tone. Maybe because I sang bass, I thought it was boring. Although we all knew those tenors were wimps.

1,999 Pounds is roughly $4K USD. Probably on the high side of what the market will pay. ;)

Good luck with the sale. It's a beauty.

Eman, Your CL30 looks nice. The only CL that I kept was my CL30. I think your price is right, as long as the guitar has no issues.

Here's one of your photos.

I'm with Noah on this one, price is just about right, and a very nice guitar!

Good advice from all. Thank you! Another question... Do OFC members ever just trade guitars to see if they prefer one over another with option from either party to return if not satisfied?

There are many things about Ovations that I like and can't find in other OEM guitars but it's difficult to narrow the search with all the models they make. This CL is perfect in many respects but isn't boomy, which unfortunately for me translates into enhanced mids-treble by my defective hearing. "Experts" have told me this is a perfectly balanced guitar and they don't have the same hearing impairment so I believe them. So, I'm stuck having to listen to each candidate (I know this is the best method of selection but impractical and very limiting).

Just a thought. If anyone were willing to risk the shipping cost, I'd be open to a trade. One precaution though... I keep my guitars in show-room condition and would expect a trade partner to do the same until final decisions are made.

Thanks to all for your help with pricing. Looking forward to more feedback.

E-Man.

Eman, have you listened to this guitar with someone else playing it? Just asking, because Ovations are famous for sounding much different (BETTER) when you're out in front as opposed to being the player.

Eman, if you're interested, sometime in the next week, maybe I can come up to H.B. (I live outside of Mission Viejo), and bring with my my newly rebuilt 87 Collectors and 1537. If you can wait a month, it should be about that long until my OFC slothead is back from the factory. I think you might be amazed at the sound of it.

I wish I had the money and could buy your 30th CL. I remember when Al got the first one and commented that it sounded like an old Martin. An A braced deep bowl center hole is a wonderful guitar.

But I fully understand that when you are playing for yourself, you've got to please your own ears.

In fact, if you like the deep sound of your Martin, then you should definitely play my OFC slothead when it gets back. You may find yourself selling the Martin and the 30th CL to special order a slothead Adamas. If you've never played one, then you owe it to yourself to give it a shot.

If you have any interest, then email me off the board, moody.pi@cox.net......

I am not familiar with the sound of many Ovation models but am interested in the boomier models. I think that means deep bowl. To my ear, I think the multiple sound hole models have stronger bass. There are exceptions to every rule though so whatever "model" means less than the boominess of the individual instrument. Did I say boomy enough times??

Got to keep the Martins. They suit my hearing the best. Thanks for the info. Let me know if anyone is willing to make a deal before it goes out on eBay.

If you want a boomer, you may like the Ute (U681t) that's on the For Sale section of the board. The reason you might prefer the Elite style is that they seem to project the bass up closer to your ear. I thought my Ute was too bass-biased when I first got it and didn't realize how balanced it was until someone else played it and I listened. To me, the 30th CL has plenty of bass.
Take Moody up on his offer. You're relatively close to a bunch of Ovations you could try. I pretty much have to buy them or travel 400 miles to try them.

I sure do like the Elite style sound holes and the UTE is beautiful. Wish I could afford it. In fact, I'd get the 1537 but can't afford that either right now.

Without good trade options present, I'll invest some more time in set-up and probably continue to struggle with thoughts of sale. You may see this guitar on the bay. If you're interested, spend some time reading my posts to get the full history.

I guarantee the look and sound plugged in, it's the acoustic sound that I'm not 100% satisfied with. Remember, this is coming from a guy with a hearing disorder who is comparing an Ovation and a Martin HD-28.

Cheers.
