These are very cool instruments. I hadn't seen one before last weekend.
Think of it as a drum kit (bass, snare & HH) contained in a 12x12x16 box that you sit on while you play.

The Aspire model has about the same retail price as the one I brought over but the construction is tidier and it has better bass response. Personally I prefer the basic $249 LP model over the more expensive Cortes. The Angled model is the one to have.

Just to clarify my last post. I meant the Aspire is tider and has better bass than the one I had at Amelia.

The Aspire stuff's not bad (for the money).
I've got a nice pair of Aspire bongoes.

Aspire is to LP what Celebrity is to Ovation.

Say Stephen, I ordered one, so when it arrives, if you bring over your Collins and twins for me to play with, I'll let you beat on my Cajons.

They also have sound clips. My advice, either go for the $249 LP model, the extra hundred bucks is worth it over the Aspire, or wait for the angle-panels to come in.

Boy, you talk about having some big cajones! Why don't you just ask him about the next factory tour while you're at it?

That could be arranged but be prepared for a major case of GAS! I suspect you would be calling Al (who never closes) before I get the baritones back out to the car. The 6 string is really nice but the 12 string is just a fookin freak of nature.

If anyone needs a microphone for your new Cajon, I have stock of the little clip-on dynamic I was using inside mine at Amelia. It's intended as a snare/tom mike but works great inside a cajon. Email me for price, they are not expensive.

Oh YES, they exist. In fact there is a whole internet fan club devoted to them. Of course you'd rarely see any in your local music shop and no high profile musicians are ever seen playing them but they do exist.

Dave

BTW, I think it's spelled "Lyrachord". At least that's what the T-hirt says ...

I got mine this week too. I bought an extra one and will give it to Joe for the Florida House tonight. It is Wednesday, topic is Mexico. I chose New Mexico. Going for three straight weeks of nada. Using the CJ through the Ashdown Reso-1 little acoustic amp and the loop pedal.

OK, so now you all need to put together something like this:-

This is cheap used stuff from ebay and a couple of bargains from Guitar Centre. 18" crash, drilled and paper fastners added, 10" splash, 12" china and a tambourine. The whole lot came to less than $150 including the hardware and stand.

Clip-on Cajon mikes are back in stock if anyone needs one.

Got my LP AngledFront this week as well . . . VERY Cool!!!

I've also got an extra one that'll be accompanying me 'cross the Atlantic at the end of May, but will stay behind to reside on this little Island in Scotland ("ToughLife", . . for a cajon).

Friggin' cajons're racking-up more FrequentFlyer Miles than ME!! . . . .

That's the beauty of this club - it takes all the pressure off of having to make buying decisions. Just buy what everyone else does and you'll probably not be too disappointed. Nor have much money left in the bank.

Dave

PS - Do banks even exist anymore? I mean the old brick ones where they actually stamped your balance in your bank book, and you went and made your weekly Christmas Club deposit?

Speaking of the insides, I noticed that the one at Amelia used about a half-dozen bells to obtain its snare-like tones. Mine has a number of small chains similar in size to a medium size necklace. Is this like comparing humbuckers and single-coils?

I've only seen them on the internet. I never heard of them till you guys started talking about them. Of the ones on the internet, I've seen an actual snare from a drum used and also wires that looked like guitar strings strung across the inside of the front, sometimes diagonally and sometimes top to bottom.

my LP has snares. they resemble chains at first glance but upon closer inspection, they are snares like the ones on the bottom of a snare drum.

The bells are not that important. The main source of the snare sound was a couple of 0.042-ish guitar strings under tension, resting against the front panel, exactly as Mark describes. Some cajons use this method, others such as the LP angle-panel use cut down snaredrum wires. Amounts to the same thing. Some have sophisticated mechanisms to adjust the snare sound (which triples the cost of the thing) That pretty much amounts to attempting to gold-plate a turd.

Randy, I have only 2 mics left from my current stock. I can get more but they are out of stock at the distributor so could be several weeks.

As I was describing to Temp & Beal:

They both sound GOOD, . . each just a lil' "different" . . .

Temp's ChineeProto sounds like set of chrome Slingerlands . . . Wet&Snare-y . . .

The AngleFronts're a bit Drier&Woody-er . . . like a big, heavy set of wooden Ludwigs . . .

BothGood/Different.

For those of you who bought Cajons from Al and microphones from me, just thought I'd share this neat little internal microphone instalation.

Remove the thumbscrew/bolt from the microphone clamp and drill a hole in the base of the cajon. The mike now screws directly to this. Get hold of a male XLR chassis plug and mount it in the back of the cajon. Take a short length of microphone cable and solder a female XLR line socket to it, soldering the other end to the chassis plug.

The entire job took me less than 20 mins. I'm not really sure if it's worth the effort but it looks tidier and saves all of 45 seconds of set-up time at a gig!

Incidentaly, I have 1 of these mikes left and that's it, I can't get any more. So if you need one now's your last chance. $65 plus shiping

GreatIdea!!!

When we had this set up for "th'Vic", Paul installed two mics into it, the one in the pic for the "kick", and a smaller, condensor mic for the "slap" of the snare (and each mic was eq'd correspondingly) . . .

Thru a PAIR of Bose units, it sounded KILLAH!!!!!

btw;
The cajon came over w/me from the States.
We figured "why transport an empty box?", so I took the face-plate off (17screws), and we PACKED it with sundry goodies & closed it back up again.
I fashioned a sturdy handle onto the shipping carton, and it served as THIRTY-NINE pounds of Checked Baggage . . .

Got a couple sideways-glances at Security, but it made it there without a hitch.

(I CAN tell you tho, that I didn't "miss it" on the return trip).

Well I finally did the microphone upgrade.

Actually put two jacks in (one on each back corner) so that I could run dual mics for low and high frequencies if I decide I want to down the road.

Did a few minutes of recording....FANTASTIC!

Thanks again for the great idea Paul and for those of you with that extra bit of Christmas cash still laying around............

CALL AL AND BUY A CAJON!!!!
They are kick ass fun and sound great.

Bobbo also made me go out and buy a REAL tambourine today. Laughed at me when I told him I did not have one (he has 3!!)

Guess a cowbell is next ;)

With the new mic'd up cajon, the shakers and cabasa I had and now the new tambourine I am a percussion machine!

Cliff and I are shown playing the cajon on the March 2010 calendar page.

I've taken mine out several times when I know there's going to be a drummer in the house willing to sit in for a set or two. I use just one mic with a clip-on attachment.
