looks like a Legend Deluxe, 68-70 by the serial #
hand laid deep bowl cannon, it's an early one for sure... what type of tuning machines are on it?

Grovers? Klusons? maybe schallers?

worth more than you're asking in my opinion..

I'm wondering...

if prototype, would it have the "-X" and date serial number or is that later?

neck says "Deluxe" as in Deluxe Balladeer

neck has inlaids that do not match the 1117 but does match my Deluxe Balladeer shiny bowl, this is not a shiny bowl.

yet, this neck is bound and my Deluxe Balladeer neck is not bound.

pretty rough in the area where bowl meets the neck

is this a Balladeer bowl that has been attached to a 1117 bowl...if so, don't think by factory.

bridge...not 5pt, so ?? early 70's or later, serial number with an F sequence shows 7/68-2/70

course, 1117 bowl is A braced AAA spruce, probably is a great guitar.

????????????????????????

This guitar has had the bridge replaced at some point. It should have the "winged" bridge. It was made for about a year or so from 1969 to maybe 1971 and is listed in the 1970 catalog. It has VT-11, I think, bracing.

Bobbo has one with the original winged bridge.

BTW, is this an O case I got with it?

I'll take some pics tomorrow, but it's time to play right now.

Congrats Damon. Hope it's a good one. Mine is very similar ... the s/n is about 100 later than yours. I do not have the "Deluxe" on my peghead, but I have the winged bridge. Aside from thsat, everything else is looks to be the same. These are legends before there were legends. Very light, bvery responant. Just played mine and it sounds great.

Thanks Bobbo. It has a couple of tiny dings, and two small (maybe 2 inches) finish cracks. If the bridge was replaced, it must have been done at the Mothership, cuz I can't see any sign of it.

This is definitely a "good one" though. It sounds unbelievable, the action is incredible, and it plays as well as my elite lx (Sounds WAY better acoustically than the lx mid-bowl though).

I have a new favorite acoustic player now. It used to be the LX, but this one sounds sweeter and is much louder. I can keep up with the friggin wood box bastards now!

Richard was a nice guy too. Even if he is a Martin dude :D

He's got a nice Martin slothead on the local CL too. I'd be happy to deal with him for anyone that may be interested in it.

Moody, I think you're pretty much right on. The label puts it in New Hartford, and it's VT bracing, but I don't know which one for sure yet.

I think it's the Gieb Hardshell case.

I'll take better pics tomorrow and include the tuners. They look like Schallers, but are shaped just a bit different than others on my later Os.

It doesn't look like there was a bridge replacement, so if it was done, it was done well.

The 2 odd things I see are the "Deluxe" on the headstock, and the bridge.

Maybe it WAS a proto, or just an early one. Maybe this bridge was used before the "wings"? According to Bobbo, this one predates his. I would have expected a 5 point bridge prior tho.

Regardless, it sounds great. It seems it might indeed be a rarity, and a smarter guy would probably lock it away and preserve it, but I intend to play the hell outta it. No sense letting something this sweet sit.

Here's a link to the 1970 catalog which has this guitar in it.... 1970 Catalog

As you can see, the guitar is still called the Deluxe Balladeer and it does have the winged bridge. The bridge on guitar in this thread has been replaced. There are a lot of old Ovations out therre which had 5 point rosewood bridges and winged bridges that were replaced early on. Not a big deal except to a collector who wants a pristine instrument. But if you bought it to play it, who cares?

If you look further down in the catalog, you'll see that the specs of the guitar are included.

And my guess is that most of the guitars in the catalog were in production sometime in 1969. The previous catalog came out in about 1968 and the next one came out in 1972.

The 1972 catalog, Here" target="_blank" title="http://www.ovationtribute.com/Catalogues/Ovation%2070%27s%20Catalog%20I/Ovation%2070%27s%20Catalog%20I.html]Here">http://www.ovationtribute.com/Catalogues/Ovation%2070%27s%20Catalog...

Shows the same guitar, now called the Legend, with the current walnut bridge (seen on the guitar in this thread -- that doesn't make this guitar a 1972... the serial number says it's earlier, it just means the bridge was replaced).

The next catalog is from 1977 and in that, is the Legend in the configuration in which it stayed for 20 years.

Nice grab, Damon. I'm glad to see you are acquiring some nice acoustics for me to play at the NW jam. Once I get my hands on this one, I don't think I'll leave enough time that weekend for you to teach me anything on the electrics.

Moody, looks like you're spot on. It's the same bridge as the 72 catalog.

Anyway, many of my guitars are going to be neglected for a while. This one will be getting all my attention. At least til Thursday when the 6774 arrives!)

Mark, I'm doin' my damnedest, but limited funds will keep me from amassing a collection as sweet as yours by the time we all meet up.

I sure do hope to have a chance at an Adamas. Those pics at Amelia made me wet myself.

Though if I play one, it may be my undoing.

Don't tell people you wet yourself looking at an Adamas. I'll only let you play one of mine if you're standing up and use a short strap.

Mark, I'll try to control myself, but just in case, I'll wear my plastic underwear!

I have no idea where to put this one on Dave's site. There's no "Deluxe Balladeer" section, and the model # is a Legend.
