There were only 3 or 4 of them made and they RAWK! |

Basically I'm a guitarist right, so I want a slender, low profile, narrow necked bass that I can easy to play bass (obviously Ovation). |

They may all be sold. Woody has a bastardized one that he fixed up pretty nice. I have one and I am not sure who got the others. |

Has a HUGE sound. |

The IV above has the active electronics so the thing you may want to consider is how much you play. If you will play it often, no problem. If it will sit for several months at a time, you will need to keep a pair of 9V batteries on hand, rather than just "grab it and plug in."
I believe the "black" pickup is just the regular pickup with the chrome cover off of it. Due to their size (the cover) they did tend to get scratched up or even dented if well used. |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | There were actually a few more than 4 PF-22 Basses made. I had 5 at one time, and I have seen 3 or 4 others. That may indeed be all of them. I think the idea was 22 PF-22's made, 11 Bass and 11 Guitars... This is just a guess really based on how they did things, ones I've seen or owned, and info from Beal and the guy who came up with guitars. If I was at home, I'd look up his name in my address book, but I met him in Florida. Nice guy, and seemed pleased and maybe a bit surprised that his "babies" were still out there and appreciated. |

I have owned a lot of basses over the years, as that WAS my primary instrument, including a Fender Jazz Bass, a Rick, a Vox, and others, and I now have a Magnum. I personally feel (my opinion) that the Magnum Bass is the best of all and an undiscovered treasure. Any opportunity to own a good one is a good investment. Get one while the price is still down! |

I saw one in a live setting not too long ago. Jeff Ament from Pearl Jam had one on stage in a rack. Didn't use it for the show, but I've heard he's done a bunch of studio work with it. |

Both are basses.. Typhoon is a hollow-body f-hole Basses, Magnums are solid-body Basses.
Probably the only thing that could me more different is comparing an upright Bass to a Steinberger Bass. |

Now I'm confused. Some say the PF22 is the bass to get. Others say Magnums are. Which Magnum? They were four models right? |

Location: GATLINBURG TENNESSEE :) | The PF22 was a prototype for the Magnum Bass. Aside from a slight body shape variation and the absence of the bridge pickup, I don't really see any other difference. I think mauvis beal (cwk?) would probably have the correct answer here. |

Location: GATLINBURG TENNESSEE :) | Well after taking a closer look, the pickup configuration and location are quite different. I guess it would come down to what sound you desire. With the presence and placement of two pickups on the Magnum, it makes sense that you would have much more control over your range of sounds. On my Magnum, I can turn on just the bridge pickup and to the slap-and-pop funk thing, switch to the neck pickup and dampen the strings for a stand-up jazz bass sound, combine the two for endless adjustable variations, not to mention the addition of effects. |

Mag 3 and 4 came later.
PF22 was after that.
PF22 was NOT the proto for the magnum. It was to be the model that brought the bass concept more mainstream.
There was no limitations on the numbers made. It was spozed to go to production but didn't get there. I'd guess there were maybe 20-30 guitars and 10+/- basses.
Typhoon is a hollow body, 30" scale
Mags are 34" solid body.
Totally different. |

It came this way, in fact it is one day off from Damon's PF Viper.

I think the one shown there is a prototype. Note the unblackened pickup bezel and white mute handle.
Mike Markure does a good job of showing it off, doesn't he? |

Yep, this one was done the day before. It's slightly older cousin. Same brown material for the pickup rings and TRC.
White knobs though.

"Prototype" Hmm I wondered about that but wasn't certain , I have a Magmun I bass that looks very similar, so it too must be an early one.
I also have a Mag II that I used to try and play and even played it over 20 yrs ago at the NSGW (Nat'l Summer Guitar Worshop). I rec'd much interest about it from other attendees, but being so Ovation-centric as a kid, I really never knew how unique they were.
I never really did become the Bass player I wanted to be at the time. Unfortunetly being a kid and using such a heavy bass w/a long neck, it has suffered some handling damage. The Mag II has an add-on raw aluminum Piezo tailpiece on it, along with the the other traditional neck and bridge pickups. The orignal antiqued looking tailpiece is still in the case with it. I recall having a small box shaped preamp clipped onto the strap to make the tailpice pickup work. Probaly a stacked Vol/Tone style preamp, though I don't reacll where the battery was. I've got to dig that instrument out again.. Talbot |
