Location: Boise, Idaho | You might check out Miles' (Mr. Ovation) Book Elite that he has for sale. It's basically an 87 collector that they dressed up for the Walter Carter book in 1996. Has outies, though. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | The Wabbit actually plays at some of those higher frets (I've seen him), so he has a need for a cutaway. I don't really, so I figured I'd keep the 1537 when I give my daughter her 87. The 87, to my ears, has a bit more of a crisp tone than the 1537. There is at least enough difference that you could justify owning both if you felt you needed to justify it. |

Location: SoCal | Well, that's one of the problems. Hit them hard on a hardwood floor and the face will crack wide open.
What I was actually thinking was that if you get an 87 C, life as you know it will be over. You'll play nothing but it, your wife and kids will get mad that you're ignoring them, and your other guitars will be jealous and might just attack you in the middle of the night.
They are great guitars.
I have both, an 87C and a 1537. Similar, but different voices. Both get played, but the 87C is the "go to" guitar when I'm going to plug in or play in public. These are really wonderful guitars and are worth more than the current pricing (around a grand)...... |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Mine has a significant finish crack by the neck, so the price was discounted. I haven't played an 03, so I can't compare. If it's a midbowl, I've never played a midbowl that I liked as much as the 87. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | I had the '87C and the Book Elite at the same time a while ago. There has always been this mystique about the '87C and it is one of the finest guitars they have made. But honestly I could hear no difference between it and the Book Elite. I had a few others play them and came to the same conclusion. I wanted to sell one, didn't care which since they were identical except cosmetics. The 87C sold because I was asking less money for it (Book Elite is a factor of 10 more rare). In hind sight I'm not playing the Book Elite either, so probably should have sold both of them. Anyway, the 87C (or Book Elite) are very nice instruments that you will enjoy for a long time. Something about sunburst Ovations that just make them sound better than their natural finished counterparts.
That fact (sb vs natural) has been documented by Tupperware, StandingOvation, and Gallerinski (and yours truly) so you KNOW it to be TRUE! |

Location: Phoenix AZ | It's not difficult to understand why the sunbursts sound better. Same effect as adamas I and II guitars. The sunburst (and adamas bursts) are done using multiple coats of paint and the edge of the soundboard gets more paint than the center. The effect of this added paint towards the edges is that it dampens a lot of the odd harmonic interactions between the soundboard and edge kerfing, or attachment point, to the bowl. A vibration contour plot of a natural finished top shows a lot of "noise" towards the edge, whereas a plot of sunburst or adamas burst is much smoother.
