How about a different spin? Is anyone else 100% Ovation? |

For electrics, 5 of 10 are Ovation, 50%
Overall, Ovation has the market share at my house with 68% (74% overall for Kaman) |

Damon does pretty well for a guy who has so many guitars that he loses count. I was worried that I lost one between Miles' driveway and back yard when we were unloading them. |

I've been playing this guitar at home, on stages, teaching others, and when travelling. I've religiously kept it in a hard case when not being played and it looks almost new, aside from a chip-off on the top of the neck it sustained in 1992, however I superglued it back and it's small and you can't tell. Other than that, it's in mint condition and imminently playable.
I've considered other guitars all of these years and practiced on them, but have not found another guitar with a comparable sound. I love this guitar. It's got a deep rich bass, and awesome midrange and highs. The sounds blend together like nothing else..... |

Funny thing is ... my wife agrees with your wife!
I think "waste" may have been the wrong word ... Part of me is jonsing after a takimine, a prs and another warmoth build, possibly an eliteT, but as a guitar player, jonsing after a guitar is normal. |

Though I have been drooling over the Koalas for the past couple of years...I may finally have to bite the bullet soon...
I've had as many as 14 O's and A's at one time before, but have paired down for now to just the Viper and the 12-string until I find the perfect Adamas and perfect 6-string Ovation. Again that Koa is speaking to me...
I will be slimming down more when my custom wood-body gets finished at the end of the year, and then it's back to saving up for the next big thing. |

I wonder if I can run the argument that I need one with a 1 3/4 inch neck and another with a 1 11/16 inch neck. Help me out with some GAS inspired justifications guys! |

My bandroom isn't just for practicing and storage. Its my sanctuary. Its one of those total package value exceeds the sum of the individual parts kind of rationale. SWMBO doesn't buy into it, either. |

If you're trying to justify GAS to yourself, that's easy.
With an electric guitar, you get an amp and a bunch of effects to get different sounds for different songs. With acoustic, you can't do that (despite the VXT), so you need different guitars.
Obviously a 6 and a 12. Then:
A wider neck 12 fretter for fingerstyle;
A Ute, to get that fingerstyle thing above in the Adamas version;
A nylon string classical, one with a cedar top for classical and another with a spruce top for Classical Gas or Spanish or flamenco (doesn't matter);
A 1537 (nuff said);
An 87 so you have a cutaway;
A shallow bowl for playing standing up;
A mid bowl with some bling, for show and tell;
A Custom Legend, because it's the classic Ovation;
A Koa, because it sounds like Koa and looks Kool;
Got kids? One from each of their birth years;
A 97 Collector, since everyone needs a parlor size;
Any slothead, because it's a slothead.
I'll think of more as I get more GAS pains. |

| I had one Ovation, a Custom Balladeer, 1112, which I bought new in 1974. I ordered a lefty but they sent me a righty with a lefty nut. I had a luthier friend re-slot the bridge to correct the intonation and it was my favorite acoustic until it was stolen in New Orleans in 1977.
About 2 years ago, I found a lefty Custom Balladeer on eBay. It was in Louisiana so I bid on it wondering if it was my stolen lefty. I won the bidding and guess what? No, it was not my old Ovation, but it was a 1974 lefty Custom Balladeer and the serial was close to my earlier guitar. So I have my one and only Ovation back.

Did you include a baritone in that list? I think a 2080 baritone might be pretty sweet. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | The list is expandable. I've never heard or played a baritone. Some would also include varieties of 12 strings, but I don't play the one I have much. I didn't include any basses or electrics either. I think my list is quite reasonable, but others think I'm crazy. None of the guitars I have goes unplayed for more than a few days, except for the Matrix, and that was the only guitar I had for years. I keep it for old times' sake. |

It was made for the Japan market and has an ebony fret board and OPTIMA preamp. Other than that it is a pretty much stock 1581. I like the deep conventional round bowl. It's a real cannon. |

Location: Keepin' It Weird in Portland, OR | Thank You Mark for "How To Justify GAS"...
I try to explain why I have nine (now) Ovations...
"But they are All Different!"
You have FOUR that are exactly alike...
"No! Two are contour, One is a twelve, One has a finished-top which makes it sound different... They are different!"
You have two 'Artists', they are the same...
"No! One is acoustic/electric. And one is a Beater!"
So, Why do you need two Twelve Strings?
"One plugs-in, One don't. One is a twelve-fretter, on is fourteen. One is an antique, One is New."
And that one?
"It's Purdy, and I can't afford a 1537."
:mad: So... What's with all those electrics?
"One is S/S/S, one is S/S/H, that's a phony Gibson... And they were CHEAP! (some came with amps, too!)"
Yeah... I guess "Justify" is the Right Word! :rolleyes:

My daughter has 2 pianos. Either one cost more than most of my guitars, yet no one has ever asked why she needs more than one piano. I resisted buying her the second one, but I'm glad now that I did. If it took 3 or 4 keyboards to do all the different things hers does, it would be worth it. I'm to the point in my life where I should have what I want and that should be all the reason anyone needs. |

Location: Sydney, Australia | Some very good food for thought here. I'm thinking I need to remind SWMBO how much the Yamaha Grand Piano that she plays less than I play my guitar costs, in a subtle sort of way, so that she hears herself saying something like "I spent way more on the piano than he's ever likely to spend on guitars" (She doesn't know about people like MIB) "I shouldn't really complain if he buys more".
Maybe I could do that by saying something like: "Gee the piano sounds great after we spent $120 getting it tuned. I wish it could be tuned for free like my guitar. Maybe I should learn how to tune the piano and save us some money?" This will be a real red flag as I need the electronic tuner to get the guitar in reasonable shape (and she knows this). She'll then say "Oh money isn't that tight, we should live a little".
Then some time later I could say "I wish I had a guitar with a wider/narrower neck, fewer/more frets, spruce/koa/carbon fibre top (etc.) so I could make this tune sound nicer/easier to play" |

SWMBO justifications for GAS
1. Guitars cost way less than sports cars
2. Guitars cost way, way less than girlfriends
3. I can indulge in them at home
4. When I indulge in public, the scandal is minimal
My own justification for GAS
I have the money. |
