I only have one Ovation, my Artist 1621 sunburst.

When I had a bunch of them (up to around 16) I had them all around the house and studio but I only played this one, so I decided awhile back that that is the model I like to play.

I also have only one Adamas II that is really cool and sounds great, but I don't play it that much.

I had a bunch of Ovation nylon string models but I am not playing nylon string that much anymore.

So my Artist is it.

So, who has only one Ovation?

Right now I only have my black Legend. I had an old Balladeer that my Dad had given me, but I gave that to my ex when I moved out here. I had a Tornado that my Dad gave me when I was 16, but I sold it 40 years ago. I also used to have a Matrix back in the day, and a couple of Applause. One of them I mad left-handed and gave to my sister. I have a couple of Celebrities on the wall here at the shop. (By the way, I wish people wouldn't "dis" them so much. They are a GREAT starter guitar in that they are so easy to play, sound a lot better than other guitars at that price, and they're pretty.)

It's Snobbery!

I've had a few, and they were/are nice. I enjoyed them, and the people who have them now like them. And you don't have to worry about the top cracking (too much).

It's kinda like people who used to insult my Yamaha motorcycle (now gone)...

"All you got is a Yamaha?"
"And what kind of motorcycle do you have?"
"A Harley"
"How much did it cost?"
"$22,000!"
"My Yamaha cost $500, runs great, and I can park it anywhere without worrying about it too much."

I just got off the phone with Al, so I have another one. It's sort of the only one this year, definitely the only one this month (so far), and I haven't bought more than one on the same day for a couple years.
I only have one Koa.

Learn Maury's parts to all those Jim Croce songs before you come. It shouldn't take you long. Don't bring any guitars, though. I'd just end up playing yours and listening to you shred those electrics if you did.
I'll have some good red wine for you when you get here. Something you can't get anywhere else.

Nice choice, Mark. You'll cherish it just like your OFC model. For all you members who decide to keep only one O/A, the rest of us who don't thank you from the bottom of our hearts and wallets.

It'll be in the mail today, so I'll be in the doghouse in a couple days. There's still one 12 fretter and a few 14 fretters left. That was a tough choice.
I tasted some very smooth and unusual reds a couple Saturdays ago. One was at a winery that's for sale. Are you interested, Damon? Riverfront.

Tecchnically, I have two: My Koala and my Matrix.

In practical terms, the Matrix sits unused in a closet, so I'd say I'm down to one.

I just have an 05 collector. I had an old balladeer as well but decided with the limited number of guitars I could have I wanted more variety.

All I have is my 1778LX, which I love. I've been considering a Celeb to use as a "campfire" guitar, but SWMBO hasn't gotten over the initial shock of my LX purchase yet.

I had my Matrix as my only Ovation and my only guitar for probably 20 years. I had an Applause 12 string that never got used for about the next 10. Then I found this site and all hell broke loose.
How about a different spin? Is anyone else 100% Ovation?

Not I. I have 9 acoustics, 8 are Ovations, the other is a Takamine Nashville series.

So 88% goes to Ovation (100% Kaman though)

For electrics, 5 of 10 are Ovation, 50%

Overall, Ovation has the market share at my house with 68% (74% overall for Kaman)

You guys are worse spinmeisters than I am. I'm glad I'm 100%. Otherwise, I'd have to keep it at 10 total, just so I could do the math. Damon does pretty well for a guy who has so many guitars that he loses count. I was worried that I lost one between Miles' driveway and back yard when we were unloading them.

I have four guitars:
Ovation 1624 CA
Adamas MEWP
Warmoth telecaster
Olympia Electric Papoose

I'd love to have more, thinking about a takamine, but when I have five guitars or more one of them always goes unplayed so it's a waste.

One O, and one Alvarez-Yairi 12 string. One Hohner electric, and trying to sell an Ibanez electric. The daughters each have an acoustic O, one daughter also has a Preacher that I get to play.

I'm still looking for "the one". So consequently I have many that are going through the cycle of intense evaluation. I may get there someday. When I do, I'll let y'all know. But for now, I'm playing the field and am a confirmed polyguitarist. Which may be illegal in your state.

Just the one; a 1974, 1621-4 as shown below and I'm the original owner. The dreadnaught is a Norman B20 and the classical guitar was made for my wife.

I have one Ovation, a 1991 Ultra series Model 1312. I bought this guitar new that year and it has the greatest sound I could imagine.

I've been playing this guitar at home, on stages, teaching others, and when travelling. I've religiously kept it in a hard case when not being played and it looks almost new, aside from a chip-off on the top of the neck it sustained in 1992, however I superglued it back and it's small and you can't tell. Other than that, it's in mint condition and imminently playable.

I've considered other guitars all of these years and practiced on them, but have not found another guitar with a comparable sound. I love this guitar. It's got a deep rich bass, and awesome midrange and highs. The sounds blend together like nothing else.....

Country Artist,

I don't know if you remember ... but you directed me to the case for my CA on ebay ...

Funny thing is ... my wife agrees with your wife!

I think "waste" may have been the wrong word ... Part of me is jonsing after a takimine, a prs and another warmoth build, possibly an eliteT, but as a guitar player, jonsing after a guitar is normal.

I only have one acoustic Ovation and one electric currently.

Though I have been drooling over the Koalas for the past couple of years...I may finally have to bite the bullet soon...

I've had as many as 14 O's and A's at one time before, but have paired down for now to just the Viper and the 12-string until I find the perfect Adamas and perfect 6-string Ovation. Again that Koa is speaking to me...

I will be slimming down more when my custom wood-body gets finished at the end of the year, and then it's back to saving up for the next big thing.

It doesn't look good for me. I had one Ovation for 20 years, then replaced it with an Adamas. Now am about to get another Adamas, but having a hard time letting go of the first one. Also have a 12 string Ovation and a Maton classical, but they don't count.

I wonder if I can run the argument that I need one with a 1 3/4 inch neck and another with a 1 11/16 inch neck. Help me out with some GAS inspired justifications guys!

There is no possible way I could limit myself to just one. I enjoy the variety too much, not only in how they play and sound, but also how they look. My bandroom isn't just for practicing and storage. Its my sanctuary. Its one of those total package value exceeds the sum of the individual parts kind of rationale. SWMBO doesn't buy into it, either.

He's got it figured out. Richard, if you need justification, search for a thread on my patented justification system. Actually it's October 27, 2006. I'd do a link, but I don't know how.
If you're trying to justify GAS to yourself, that's easy.
With an electric guitar, you get an amp and a bunch of effects to get different sounds for different songs. With acoustic, you can't do that (despite the VXT), so you need different guitars.
Obviously a 6 and a 12. Then:
A wider neck 12 fretter for fingerstyle;
A Ute, to get that fingerstyle thing above in the Adamas version;
A nylon string classical, one with a cedar top for classical and another with a spruce top for Classical Gas or Spanish or flamenco (doesn't matter);
A 1537 (nuff said);
An 87 so you have a cutaway;
A shallow bowl for playing standing up;
A mid bowl with some bling, for show and tell;
A Custom Legend, because it's the classic Ovation;
A Koa, because it sounds like Koa and looks Kool;
Got kids? One from each of their birth years;
A 97 Collector, since everyone needs a parlor size;
Any slothead, because it's a slothead.
I'll think of more as I get more GAS pains.

Jeez Mark, that's perfect for an expanded rational. I'd print it out and show it to my wife but I don't want her thinking I'm a bigger simp than she already thinks I am. But I may have to print it out to hold onto.....

I had one Ovation, a Custom Balladeer, 1112, which I bought new in 1974. I ordered a lefty but they sent me a righty with a lefty nut. I had a luthier friend re-slot the bridge to correct the intonation and it was my favorite acoustic until it was stolen in New Orleans in 1977.

About 2 years ago, I found a lefty Custom Balladeer on eBay. It was in Louisiana so I bid on it wondering if it was my stolen lefty. I won the bidding and guess what? No, it was not my old Ovation, but it was a 1974 lefty Custom Balladeer and the serial was close to my earlier guitar. So I have my one and only Ovation back.

Paul, that was not my SWMBO justification list. She would never have listened through it. I thought that Richard might need some justification for himself. It is pretty close to my thought process, if you could call it that. There is some method to the madness.

Mark,
Did you include a baritone in that list? I think a 2080 baritone might be pretty sweet.

The list is expandable. I've never heard or played a baritone. Some would also include varieties of 12 strings, but I don't play the one I have much. I didn't include any basses or electrics either. I think my list is quite reasonable, but others think I'm crazy. None of the guitars I have goes unplayed for more than a few days, except for the Matrix, and that was the only guitar I had for years. I keep it for old times' sake.

I (presently) only have one, my Adamas 1581. But it's more than enough. For now anyway.

Yep, sold the Legend. Last fall I picked up a Black 1581 from OFC memeber Wemedge. I think it originally came from Alpep. It was made for the Japan market and has an ebony fret board and OPTIMA preamp. Other than that it is a pretty much stock 1581. I like the deep conventional round bowl. It's a real cannon.

Thank You Mark for "How To Justify GAS"...

I try to explain why I have nine (now) Ovations...
"But they are All Different!"
You have FOUR that are exactly alike...
"No! Two are contour, One is a twelve, One has a finished-top which makes it sound different... They are different!"
You have two 'Artists', they are the same...
"No! One is acoustic/electric. And one is a Beater!"
So, Why do you need two Twelve Strings?
"One plugs-in, One don't. One is a twelve-fretter, on is fourteen. One is an antique, One is New."
And that one?
"It's Purdy, and I can't afford a 1537."

:mad: So... What's with all those electrics?
"One is S/S/S, one is S/S/H, that's a phony Gibson... And they were CHEAP! (some came with amps, too!)"

Yeah... I guess "Justify" is the Right Word! :rolleyes:

[Never try to argue with a crazy man]

I have tried several times to explain why I have so many guitars. No one who asks ever listens to the answer. I can't recall anyone who plays the guitar ever asking the question and I can't recall that anyone who asked the question played the guitar.
My daughter has 2 pianos. Either one cost more than most of my guitars, yet no one has ever asked why she needs more than one piano. I resisted buying her the second one, but I'm glad now that I did. If it took 3 or 4 keyboards to do all the different things hers does, it would be worth it. I'm to the point in my life where I should have what I want and that should be all the reason anyone needs.

A couple of years ago, a visitor to the bandroom asked why I had 20 guitars, to which I replied, "Because I can't afford 21." Times have apparently changed.

That's a beautiful guitar Komp. Stunning!

I've only got one at the moment as well. I OWN two, but one's in a well-known part of Connecticut at the moment, or on it's way home.

Some very good food for thought here. I'm thinking I need to remind SWMBO how much the Yamaha Grand Piano that she plays less than I play my guitar costs, in a subtle sort of way, so that she hears herself saying something like "I spent way more on the piano than he's ever likely to spend on guitars" (She doesn't know about people like MIB) "I shouldn't really complain if he buys more".

Maybe I could do that by saying something like: "Gee the piano sounds great after we spent $120 getting it tuned. I wish it could be tuned for free like my guitar. Maybe I should learn how to tune the piano and save us some money?" This will be a real red flag as I need the electronic tuner to get the guitar in reasonable shape (and she knows this). She'll then say "Oh money isn't that tight, we should live a little".

Then some time later I could say "I wish I had a guitar with a wider/narrower neck, fewer/more frets, spruce/koa/carbon fibre top (etc.) so I could make this tune sound nicer/easier to play"

If the US dollar keeps plummeting our dreams may yet come true. When I was a teenager I could get $US1.24 for my Aussie dollar. In recent years it's been as low as $US0.52, has been climbing for a few years and is pushing parity.

I had only 1 a 1112 Balladeer since 1975, until now. I just purchased a 2007 BCS Collectors series.

My first O was a 2000 Celebrity Collector's. It was my mainstay for quite a while. Got a doubleneck, but never could love it and sold it fairly quickly. Once I played my 1st LX I sold the Celebrity and never looked back.

SWMBO justifications for GAS

1. Guitars cost way less than sports cars
2. Guitars cost way, way less than girlfriends
3. I can indulge in them at home
4. When I indulge in public, the scandal is minimal

My own justification for GAS

I have the money.

I've always owned one Ovation guitar, since I started having my bouts with G.A.S. I mean I acquired a total of three to date, but only one guitar at a time. Currently, I just have one lowly custom legend (1719) that keeps me company.

... consider it as my serial monogamous relationship with the Ovation guitar ... :D

just visited a friend that has an incredible collection of guitars.

many old gibson jazz guitars and vintage martin flatops that he is so proud to have in his collection.

but he has only 1 ovation he is so proud of and it is the one he uses anytime he needs to plug in in a performance; an old 70's legend.

he says,. . . "it is very reliable, always in tune, the best guitar to travel with and people comment on the great sound". . .

. . . what more can i say?

I have had only one. It's a Custom Balladeer 1112-4 and I'm the original owner. I think I bought it in 1974. I like it better than any acoustic guitar I've played.
