Location: Delaware | Just got back from the Pocono Blues Fest in the Pocono Mts. Pa. Nice event, some real good artists, 3 stages, constant music all day, 2 days. My favorite was Ronnie Baker Brooks (son of Lonnie Brooks). Man he can make his strat talk. Me and the GF had a great time, I think this was the 17th annual. Hopeing to make the Wilmington De. River Front Blues Fest in a couple weekends. |

| And old blues is always good.
I'm a huge Lonnie Johnson fan - I think I have all his known recordings - anybody else? His playing speaks more directly to me than anybody else's from that era. And he played in jazz bands as well as being the biggest selling blues artist of his day. Almost every blues lick you ever hear was first recorded by Lonnie in the 20s and 30s. Pure genius. |

Thanks for giving me a few ideas to get me exploring this new-to-me genre; I will see what you.tube has to offer to expand my musical boundaries. Or perhaps suggestions or links to really good examples, anyone??

JMHO. I had to study up on the blues a bit with the last artist I recorded as it's not generally "my thing" and what I came away with was that "Blues" is a form of expression and is really most meaningful to the artist who created it. Covering a blues tune is fine, and can be a compliment to one of the originals, that's fine enough. But to really say you "play the blues" means you are telling your stories... not someone elses.
Once you are telling your stories, with your music, it can no longer be "good or bad" it just is.
Metal and Rap, for a large part, are the modern day, pumped up, cranked up, and in your face blues. Unfortunately Country, is and always will be... IMO crap.

It's kind of odd how the US can take influences, instruments and innovations and consider them "Country"! Which Country?
The best music is heartfelt and inspiring. |

There is a genre called "Country" or "C & W" that is good, fun entertainment. Dolly Parton's over the top, yee haw, is the epitome of the genre I'm referring to, and it's truly a fun scene to be a part of. It's more than music, it's a way of life.
Sorry, but Shania, Chesney, etc.. not country, don't care how much of a drawl ya'all, that's some good rock'n roll and I guess the fact that it's marketed as "country" just annoys me. It's good tunes tho.
Can ya tell I'm in a grumpy mood today? |
