Location: Great Britain | I am looking to purchase a new guitar (my present one was a birthday present 27 years ago) and I want it to be an Ovation.
As I have no real experience with purchasing guitars I wondered if I might ask for some advice.
I have about £300 ($600) to spend, I would like a semi-acoustic and it will probably be second hand (or pre cherished)
Any help would be welcomed |

| Do you want nylon or steel string? Do you want to play it plugged or acoustic?
I will be staying in your town (or very close by) in October if you want to try before you buy. Otherwise pm me and we can discuss it.
When I arrive in the Lake District in October I will have an American Ovation freak with me who makes Tony Soprano look like Marie Osmond (who I have met incidentally).

Location: Boise, Idaho | Stop and say hello to the people at Gilkes in Kendall. They spent a lifetime in Idaho. I spent a week in the Lake District, but most of it was in a conference room taking depositions. Rained all the time anyway. |

Pay attention, cos I'm only typing this once - my godmother's son emigrated to America in the 50s. This is how I came to live in CA in the seventies.
He met George Osmond through his business and they became friends. He had a daughter exactly the same age as Marie and they became great friends. So when the Osmonds were on tour in the UK he came with them and I got to meet them. They were the politest human beings I have ever met (strangely this includes you Paul). She was also the thinnest person I ever met. When I shook her hand it was like saying hello to an 8 year old. The older brothers seemed quite normal. Donny seemed way too fond of Marie, but that's just how it seemed to me.
So my darkest secret is out. I have met the entire Osmond Family.
Let's not revisit this. |

We haven't forgotten about you Kendal, this is just how we play. You'll see. We're fun. Except for the guy in the corner in the Tricorn hat, don't know why he's here....
My choice would be a Storm series guitar like the
Thunderhead
(this is not the best visual example IMO)
Other opinions may vary, but you get to tell a good story with this guitar and it's comfortable and is a great all 'round guitar. |

Location: Scotland | I think the term "semi-acoustic" was being used instead of "acoustic-electric" and Kendal wants an acoustic guitar with a pickup rather than a thinline electric. |

I ask 1 question and all of a sudden I have images of the Osmond family and their prostate exams filling my head.
To clear up a few things, my name is Kendal I don't live in Kendal. I live in Great Dunmow in Essex. I imagine that my parents had a "special" fondness for the place, but that's as much as I want to imagine.
As to the guitar, steel stung, acoustic with an internal pick up, for playing on my own but with the option of playing in pubs with mates.
I'd like to know what sort of questions to ask sellers and what to look for on the guitar to gauge its condition.

Be sure ask about any top cracks ( ask if they are 'Finish' cracks or if they are in the actual wood) Be cautious of excessive "Bellying" in the top and "Bridge Lift". Neck and Fretboard should be in good order and the action of the strings within proper tolerances....
Ask about buzzing or rattles and if the intonation is correct....
Working electronics etc...
Mostly you should play it... and if it feels and sounds right... get it. If not, move on.... |

Location: Sydney, Australia | Kendal, If you are travelling to the US, or know someone who is, you could save some money by picking up a second hand one on Ebay (or from the for sale section of this club) and bringing it back home on the plane. Ovations cost a lot more outside the US. |
