Since starting WorkshopLive, I've been playing more and longer on acoustic than before, and I have pretty decent calluses right now. Sometimes they threaten to peel right off the end of my finger. In the past, I've always just peeled them off when they are ready. I'm trying my best to keep the current crop intact by sanding (with an emery board) the edges to get rid of the part that wants to lift off.
Anybody have secrets for callus maintenance? |

I go back in the shop and tear off a strip of 80 grit, silicone carbide, electro-coated, emery cloth and have at it. |

We're talking "fingertips" here, Brad . . .
. . . not "hair care". |

| I use Corn Huskers Lotion a couple of times a week. It's a heavy glycerin solution. It keeps the finger tips looking smooth and your hands feel soft. |

Anybody else want me to send a package to your office from Captain Lovehandles, with the CLH smiley heart logo on it?
Oops, I edited after your "don't ask" post. But you didn't say "don't tell". |

Please... don't ask.
Note to Miles... make edit times shorter.
An envelope came to the shop from the Captain. The return address was from "Captain Lovehandles" and featured a little heart with wings.
Now the secretarys here are asking me about my out of town gay lover. |

| If you used decent strings you wouldn't get calluses. I play hours every day and I haven't got any. |

He claimed to have arthritis, and that was the only way he could play. I suggested he take up piano, or harmonica, or singing. It totally amazes me how ignorant some people are about music.
As far a callouses, I just leave mine alone. If they get rough on the edges and I'm tempted to pick them, I pick something else instead. |

Big deal..... |

However "that" is not what I'm picking. I'm a little disappointed that I didn't get more wise-"initial" comebacks on that line though. Where's Cliff? |

Location: Keepin' It Weird in Portland, OR | I hadn't been playing any of my electrics for awhile...
I recently start playing the Oscar Schmidt Phony 335...
Now, those electric strings are real easy to play at first,
but after awhile those skinny strings start acting like a cheese-slicer on your finger-tips.
But I just said to myself that this is Good for my callouses. |

Actually, I fall in the emery board camp, particularly when doing flick-offs when little catchy bits affect my playing. |

Location: 6 String Ranch | And now to the question, Capt Handle&Grettle, just keep using the emeryory board. I have some that Ed Gerhardt sells on his web site, 4 grits. I also have a 6" bastard file from the hardware store. I use that mostly for the nails on the right hand, after I build them up with super glue and acrylic powder. But as far as the the callouses just keep playing. Glad Workshoplive is working out for you. |

And I fail often at implementing Matt's practice routine, but even when I fall short, I'm still better focused in my practicing than before. By the way, guys, Grayson Capps music is perfect for ear training practice. Tune to drop D and work on Wail & Ride. You'll say "I didn't know I could do that!" |
