So it's going to be interesting to see where this one ends up..... |

Adamas I 1687-8 Ovation 30th Anniversary
I'm just say'n... no it's not a 70's Ovation, but then again... it's $2,500.00 not $4,365.00. I realize the originals add some mojo and maybe even some sound... but I doubt it sounds $2500 better than the 30th Anniversary. I'm just say'n... for those who are interested in a 1687... might be worth thinking about this. |

But those that would pay for the original probably aren't going to be buying the reissue and vice versa.
What Al is selling is a great guitar and I would buy it over the original, especially at those prices. |

All the mojo is in those guitars that have had the crap played out of them. This may be in near perfect condition but if it hasn't been played, what's the use of it being 30 years old? All the parts have probably gone brittle.
But congrats to whoever got it. Probably make quite a nice collector piece. |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | I'm not sure about the "parts going brittle" but I think we can safely say the top hasn't opened up at all.. and.. indeed the glue joints may very well act unpleasantly to being all of a sudden being strummed. It would be interesting to hear the difference between the unplayed 30 year old guitar and the unplayed re-issue, and also compare other aspects. My money would be on the new guitar overall.... if I could afford it. |

| We've discussed before whether the "CF top" of an Adamas "opens up" the way a wood guitar does. General consensus is that it most certainly does - the changes that result from playing aren't confined to the wood fibers of the top - and there is, indeed, wood between the inner and outer layer of CF on an Adamas. Opening up is also due to changes in the glues, braces, etc. Part of the fun of my 1687 RI is hearing it change the more I play it.
Now if I wanted an old one with some serious mojo, I'd take Cliff's original slothead - THAT one's seen some interesting things in its life ;)
But yeah, congrats to the seller and buyer of the one originally under discussion. |

There are some things that aren't affected the economy.
Expensive/Exotic Guitars are one of them.
The person who can afford a $5K can afford it regardless of the economy.
Now... Whether I can sell my CS-whatever or my old Balladeer for a nice price is different story.
You will notice this guitar started at $.01 with no reserve.
Uh... Rolls Royce isn't laying people off either. :p |

Reissues are really great guitars but as I'm a collector more than a player, I'm always looking for great pieces of O's history and this one is one of them.
Several month ago, I was ready to pay that price and as I already wrote it on the board, I envy the next owner.
That guitar has been tested, played, signed and finally approved by Charles Kaman himself so even if it's not the best guitar on earth, I'm pretty sure that she's very close to what he had in mind when he decided to realize the Adamas project.
That's enough for me to be sure that it's a great instrument and that the price is correct.
That kind of guitar arouse something in me that I can't explain and I love this feeling.
It's probably called passion and that's what I'm looking for when I buy a guitar.
I also had this sensation when I've opened the Box of my #47 RI for the first time and I still have this feeling each time I look or play this guitar.
Now, you can throw me stones, I'm ready... ;)

Well that's a whole other issue/aspect.
When it's something I'm collecting, than price takes on a whole new form.
If I was collecting and had $5000 as example... I would be all over that one that sold. If I was looking for something to play.. still with the same $5000, it would not even be on my radar, I would be looking to custom order or something like the 30th that was close to what I wanted and spend the balance on getting it there.
Once you mention the word "collect" it's a completely different set of cards with a completly different set of motivations. |

Still, this is in the neighborhood that the OFC I was selling at, so I would say it's money well spent all the same. I doubt you could pry one of the OFC I slothead "FR" from any of us 12 for less than $5.5-6K and a lot more as the years go by. |

As Miles said, it's a different thing to buy a guitar to collect. Since I leave all my instruments out and play them with abandon, I look at guitars a little differently. But this one is without a doubt a fine fine example of CHK's vision and passion. Definitely too fine to be in my hands. ;) |

The advantage of the OFC is that it can be a player and collector. Only 12 made, which was one motivation for my purchase, but I also had some thought that the preamp would make it more useful over the #47RI. I probably haven't plugged it in 6 times, so I could have just settled for the 47. |

Jerome, you are absolutely correct...I own a 47RI and #189 and I agree: this is such a rare and beautiful guitar...what a gem...
And now for the rest of the story:
Last January I lost a member of my family that I loved very dearly. She and her husband never had kids and yet she supported me at every turn...especially my music...
Some few months after she passed, I was contacted by her attorneys that I and my siblings had been named as beneficiaries in her will...I was and am blown away by her generosity.
This has allowed our family (my family) to first of all: get our consumer debt paid off! Secondly: it allows SWMBO to visit her family next year...lastly, as a tribute to her, I decided to buy a special guitar. Around the time I found out about this, our friend Willa was buying guitars: she contacted me and asked me to help her find some good purchases...among others, I found the 1978 Adamas I 1687-8 #342 which she was able to buy...it is mint and she is thrilled as well she should be...we both found this Adamas #119 and she knew I wanted it but that my money would not be in all at once...so, she offered to try and win the auction and then send it on to me...well, she did!
The cost of the guitar is as Jerome said: completely worth it. If you disagree, well that’s your prerogative...I will cherish it!
I have watched as this process has unfolded: let me just add that there have been things said about a certain person that are unfounded and just plain sad! While not particularly posted here in the forum, calls were made and other things done that were more than disturbing to her. I am sorry that she subjected herself to that and she is due some apologies...I will not go into detail...just trust me on this and lets let it go...
When the guitar is here, I will post pic's and a full report...
I am also fulfilling some other promises and will have additional things to share in the near future...
So, that about sums it up! I have now posted my latest book for all to see and for Dave to shake his head (lol)...
Friends, I did not tell anyone because it was something someone was doing for me...and I appreciate that more than I can ever say...it is not the first time I have been helped and I believe what goes around comes around!
I wish you all well and certainly hope that those who are looking for a similar (abit) less expensive Adamas will contact Al for a price and service that can't be beat!
So, now you know the rest of the story! For now...
Peace, out! |

From the player side of the instrument, they were all great to play for feel and resonance against the body. Now listening to people that had the ability to play them with skill...well that totally floored me. I think they all have the awesome "Adamas" sound that my ears appreciate. |

... passion... Jérôme,
You've truly captured the essence of some of us on the OFC. Yes, some love the Ovation as a working guitar. Others love 'em because of the 'bang per buck'. There are some that understand the many nuances of all the various configurations. We have some here that can tick off a checklist of model numbers, variations, label history, etc. I'm nowheres near that capability (I have a xls file just to keep up with what I have).
When I arrived here, it was due to my curiosity about my first Ovation, a CC057. I saw the broccoli heads and thought, "I'm not impressed". But as time passed and having the opportunity to learn and fondle several 'classics', I garnered an appreciation of the 'species'.
Will I ever play to the capabilities of all the Ovations/Adamasi I've collected? Never, no effing way! But, with some obvious commercialism and other's personal biases aside, I'm on a grand ride that only my last breath will extinguish my earthly passion for the 'O's and 'A's.
As an aside, I have no actual prejudice against any other brands. I own several 'abcd' gits that I purchased as a learning experience. But my heart pumps 'O' pos blood (no, really, it's my BT).
So, Jérôme, I thank you for your input, which holds more credence than most here could ever provide!
BUT, the main reason I'm here is due to the absolutely awesome folk I've met here and in person. That's the bottom line! |

Mark, I haven't forgotten your question: we are trying to find out some info: Willa is in contact with the seller and so far not a lot of info...I will try to contact him after the guitar arrives...he will not ship it direct to me as Willa was the auction winner so she is going to forward it on to me as soon as it arrives in NJ...I'll update this when we find out more...probably next week... |

Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | I did find this interesting note about Vernal in Wiki...
The Zions Bank Building (3 West Main Street) is a registered historical building in the Uintah County Landmark Register [4], due to this strange story: the building was built in 1916 by W.H. Coltharp, who wanted to use textured bricks to give a modern style to the facades. Since those bricks were made in Salt Lake City by Salt Lake Pressed Brick Company the delivery cost was enormous, amounting to four times the cost of the material.
Coltharp managed to send those bricks by USPS, through the standard mail delivery system: the fares were very low at the time, so bricks were packaged in 50 pounds parcels (7 bricks each), and sent by lots of 40 packages per day. The total amount exceeded 80,000 bricks. [5]
The shipments were transported from Salt Lake to Mack, Colorado by Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, then the parcels proceeded to Watson via the narrow gauge Uintah Railway and reached Vernal by wagon freight through steep roads. The full trip was over 420 miles long.[6]
US Postal Regulations were later changed to avoid further exploiting of the service: a limitation of 200 pounds per day per receiver was introduced. The United States Postmaster General Albert Sidney Burleson explicitly stated in a letter, "it is not the intent of the United States Postal Service that buildings should be shipped through the mail"[7]
The Bank of Vernal was nicknamed "The Parcel Post Bank". Today the building is used as branch office of Zion's Bank.
How about that...a USPS delivered Bank building and a rare Adamas in remote NE Utah...wow |

How about that...a USPS delivered Bank building and a rare Adamas in remote NE Utah...wow
I wonder how many bricks they broke in transport. I know they didn't all make it there intact considering USPS's record with me. |

Mark, it may not have shipped yet; I can check with Willa and Flysig and see if that might be possible...
And if that doesn't work out, I can possibly provide the last link from Willa to Mike. If it arrives at Willa's before the SSSJIII, I could bring it to Mikey on the way there or back. |

Mike, I really appreciate that: it is supposed to ship today as I found out and should be a Willa's by Tuesday or Wednesday…and she plans to have label ready and send it on immediately so it should be here by Friday of next week...but we'll see and keep your offer in mind...As long as it's packed well and arrives in good shape, that’s all I care about!
Of course, I can't deny that I am anxious to see and play it...wow, that’s an understatement!
I have been extremely blessed by the good will and efforts of OFC members in offering and in helping with both 199 and also 189...Paulie, I haven't forgotten you and I still owe you a steak...(or whatever)... :D ;) (ya should have played the guitar while it sat in your living room...but to tell the truth, it is a different guitar since the MS did their magic).
I also got a very nice note from Jerome stating how much he is looking forward to him and me getting together and playing 119 and 125 together...me too! |
