Up next is a great sounding and easy playing Academy slot head. This is the one with the wood fretboard, not aluminum. Has a few cosmetic issues, but makes a great beach/campfire guitar. Tuners have been repaired to work fine with steel strings. Comes with a new gig bag that I just bought for it. This guitar will make you wonder why Ovation doesn't still make them. As others have said here, "has no right to sound as good as it does". 225.00 shipped conn US.

Is this an aluminum neck with wood fretboard on top?

A couple of years ago when Witko couldn't make it to the NAMM show or party, he sent his Academy along with marking pens to write all over the top of it. We enjoyed it a whole lot more than we enjoyed having him there.

Really great guitars that are much better than you'd think they'd be....

I installed a hercules wall hanger in our kitchen and the Academy hangs there with a dry erase pen. We mark the grocery list on it and then once a week I sling the strap over my shoulder and carry the guitar through the aisles of Fry's Marketplace. I get a lot of funny looks, but most people just say "cool".

These really are very cool guitars. And if you think this (or Moody's) story is full of crap, then you don't know me.

Trust me, the more outragous Witko's story, the more likely it is to be true.....

As is his storage shed! Cool snag AJ. I played one at Smokey Mountains jam. Hard to understand how something so cheap and nasty sounds as good as it does. (Although the razor sharp Mt Everest style frets were a give-away to the cheap and nasty bit.)

Richard,

That was my KA-14. I call those frets 'speed bumps'! Actually, they teach ya to finger lightly.

Both Jim's and my KA-17s don't have the pronounced frets. Neat and surprising gits...

I think most KA-17's had the rosewood fretboards and real frets. Mine does.

This one is indeed sold and going down under.

Allison, some of the Academy's had an aluminum fretboard with molded frets that felt like you were fondling an alligator's back when you played it. The slotheads (KA 17's) have a standard wood fretboard with nice frets.

Here's one with a nice wooden fretboard. Plays as well as any other ovation in any price range.

I should have added a smiley face too. I'm just kind of teasing all of you. When they first came out and I had to inspect them, I wanted to reject them all for lack of tone. Now, I know a lot of you like them, but I just never could see it. Therefore the confusion  and the rolled eyes  Congratulations (?) AJ. :D

Alison,

I'm very tempted to send out my KA-17 to ya just to see if the years have matured the git and/or your ears.

Seriously, I'd love to get a re-evaluation from ya...

Maybe someone will bring one to the F.A.R.R.M.B.H.O.F.C.G. {phew!} (I love the name you guys gave the Black Hills gathering, but did it have to be so long? :D )
