Can any body tell me anything about using XLR outputs on Acoustic guitars, ie what type to buy for use with a guitar?
I have both 1/4" and XLR on my Ibanez. |

Location: East Wenatchee, WA | Not sure on your Ibanez. On Ovation some require an XLR with a grounded #1 pin (search thread on VIP) and I think some don't, but don't quote me on that. The grounded #1 trips the electronics "on" switch.
I would just take the bass into a music store and try a couple cords. Shouldn't make a lot of difference as long as it activates your "active" pre-amps when you plug it in. If you are passive, it probably matters not at all.
I have used both on my O's (XLR and 1/4") and quite frankly, I don't notice a lot of sound difference. The biggest advantage would be a direct in to a snake, house PA, or recorder. Otherwise, just run with the 1/4".
Others will probably disagree on this, and thus is the spice of life. :D |

Location: Boise, Idaho | The xlr gives a cleaner sound on mine, but both my acoustic amps have more doodads that work only on the 1/4 plug. Al (LostArtVintage) has the grounded cables for sale on ebay. Without it, you need to add a dummy plug in the 1/4 jack in order to turn the preamp on when using the xlr. I just remembered I need to try it with the VIP and see if the tuner works . |

Location: Scotland | OK, it's not that one sonuds better than the other or one is louder than the other. Here's how it works. Live sound works at two standards:-Unbalanced line-level and balanced mic-level. The difference between the 2 for guitars is inconsequential unless you need to run long cables. If you are running a cord of less than maybe 20 feet then unbalanced is fine. If you are going via a stage-snake then you must go via a balanced mic-level input which requires a DI transformer or and onboard XLR. BUT..... This also assumes that you understand the concept of UNITY GAIN. Unless you operate your systems to this standard then you will never sound as good as you can. It's easy. Learn it. |

XLR output
