My first guitar was an Ovation,purchased by my wife as a birthday present, back in the 80's.
Hard times came along, and had to sell the Ovation.
Better times now, am fortunate to have a stable of beauties to make music with.(guitars, not girls ;)
I sold one of my guitars yesterday, and took in a 1621-1 on trade. I had my wife close her eyes as I brought it into the living room for her to see...she got a great big smile on her face, like everything had come full circle.
Anyway, just finished setting it up. Took out a shim, set the relief on the neck...plays pretty nice.
General question: This just seems to be a nice, older Ovation, birthday 1975. Other than making an Ovation purist have a heart attack, anybody see any downside to changing out the electronics?
Am toying with the idea of putting newer electronics inside, maybe something with an onboard tuner?
Would it devalue it that much? :confused:
Or, should I leave it the heck alone? :cool: |

Location: Sydney, Australia | If you really want the VIP electronics, be warned that you have to put a dummy plug in to use the tuner. If you forget to take the plug out again, make sure you have spare batteries. This is not a problem with earlier pre-amps, most of which have built in tuners. Once you get used to a built in tuner you'll never be able to live without it. |

Location: Pacific Northwest | The electronics inside are whatever came in 1975. Under bridge pickup, battery, pre-amp, volume knob.
This guitar is near mint, so I thought I would get some feedback before pulling out the Dremel... :) |

Location: Utah | IMO, the only reason for new electronics is to get a built in tuner. You can solve that problem easily with any number of floor pedal tuners, and not have to cut up your guitar.
However, if you want an onboard tuner and new preamp, do it. It's your guitar, and it isn't like there aren't any others like it out there. If it were the last one in existence, I'd say leave it alone. But, make it what you want.
If it were me and I wanted to put something in, I'd put in an OpPro Studio or plain old OpPro, or maybe an Op30 or Op50. I would also send it to the factory for the mod. Personally I don't see any advantage with the VIP for your scenario, and the dummy plug is annoying. If you play plugged in and use a very long cord (or plug into a stage box that has a long cable to the main board), consider getting one of the preamps with the XLR. Though I think that you may be stuck in dummy-plug territory if you go for XLR. |
