My uncle bought this guitar new in 76. He died in 78 and the guitar become mine. This guitar has been all over Texas, across the country, LA and now Nashville. I taught myself to play on it. The top was cracked back in the 90's due to tragic pistol twirling accident after a late night show. It took it this long for the wood to actually pull away from the body.
Can this be fixed? Would Ovation do it? This thing has always played like dream and people always commented on how sweet it sounded. I would hate to think she is gone forever.

And for the sad but true section:
Over the years I kept phone numbers and notes of girls in this guitar. Sure it was bad for tone but I loved to randomly pull a note out and read it. The day after I was married I noticed they were all gone. My wife helped me by throwing them away. In the process she threw away the label with serial number!!!!

I'll give them a call today. I would love to have my main girl back in action. Thanks!

Crack, pistol, late night show, girls, notes, marriage, wife... There's a ballad in there somewheres! :D

Hell yes, Billy Hell, get that lovely mature gal back to the Mothership for a facial!

I was actually asked to leave Joshua Tree State Park and told never to return while playing this guitar. It didn't have anything to do with my picking though!

Looks like they are going to charge me for the fix. I think I would rather get a quote from my local luthier instead of sending it to the factory to get a quote. I appreciate the help guys and will update when I get it fixed.

What were you expecting, that they would do it for free?

My $0.02: You'll be hard pressed to find a luthier anywhere (even in Nashville) who would be set up to do the kind of work you need. Fret replacement & dressing or neck resets are one thing, but to properly fix that top requires specialized clamps and other tools specific to a bowl back that are only available at the Ovation factory.

Not trying to cheap out here. I just thought Ovation had a lifetime guarantee. Not sure why I thought that.

If you can find the original bill of sale, it's worth a shot. But most guarantees are for flaws in build or workmanship, not 30 years of being on the road, and surely not 'pistol whipping'.

As already pointed out, if you want it done right, don't let anyone but the mothership touch it.

They are (to original owners with a serial number), and I don't think a pistol-twirling accident falls under the category of material/craftsmanship failure on Ovation's part. . .

Between my wife throwing away the serial number and my slippery pistol fingers I'm out of all kinds of luck. I appreciate all the help and will move forward to get her back to good health.

They have a lifetime warranty to the original purchaser and probably not against pistol whipping accidents. Just a guess.

Contact Al at Lost Art Vintage. Even though your Dad didn't buy the guitar from him, I'm sure Al would love to help out. This one sounds like it's right down his alley.

I'm not trying to raise hackles. I'll talk to Classic Axe on Music Row. He is authorized with Ovation and I'm sure he will point me the right way which will probably be to go to the Mother ship.

Kind of like taking your car back to the dealer and asking him to fix it under warranty. Then you have to explain that it doesn't run right because you got drunk and crashed it.

BH ,

The 'OFC hive mind' has spoken. And the hive is on the same 'buzz' frequency. We're all doing the 'circle dance' for ya indicating where that classic should end up for restoration. If your CA tech/rep points you in any other direction other than the MS, buzz away!

You have a piece of USA 'O' history that deserves the caring and loving hands of the MS techs. Don't go cheap on a family heirloom and a super git!

If it's a money thing, then I'll give ya a fair price and send that puppy in myself!

I don't mean to hammer ya, but you're not going to get better advice than all those common ones above!

You could send it back for a new bowl/top...
But if I had my druthers, I would see if they could just FIX IT!
Y'know, glue, refinish, attach the binding.
If possible, they could track down the original serial number and an appropriate sticker.

When they re-topped and re-bowled my 1115, the put the same serial number and silver sticker back in.

OMA, I don't think a new top is a good idea. The stencil for the graphic is history now and it would end up being a plain top

Definitely a job for the mothership.

That's what I said....

I was referring to the in-the-bowl sticker that got thrown-out with the infamous phone numbers.

Or, if it still sounds good, just keep on playing it. Consider it another battle scar, and a good way to identify it if it ever got stolen. My black Legend has had cracks in the top for over twenty-five years, and as much as I would trust the folks at "Mother" to fix it, I wouldn't want anything to change the incredible sound of this old sweetheart.

That's the way I feel about this old ShinyBowl Deluxe Balladeer... I want a wide neck on it so bad I can taste it... but, if it were to change the tone in ANY way, I'm afraid criminal charges would be brought...

Billy,
I've sent many guitars to the mothership: some were badly damaged and some just needed setup's etc; in everycase, I received a better than new guitar... There is no one that will/can fix your guitar better than the mothership...here is a recent example from one of our members:
Before:

After:

I'll be glad to send some info to contact them via Private message...
Don't trust anyone but the factory...this is fixable and can be shipped from you to the factory and returned back to your door...
Welcome to the club...

WOW! That makes my issues look superficial.

On a side note, my wife was listening to a story on NPR about a guy that lost his first guitar and spent 20 years trying to find it. She came home insistent that I get the Ovation back on her feet. I'll send her to the mothership.
