Hi there,
Just joined the forum.
Recently acquired a "Josh White" Ovation.
My first Ovation since a "Matrix", in the late '70s.
It's a great guitar.
Be interested in what others think of this model.
Cheers :)

Is this an original or a reissue?

Both are excellent guitars, just curious which you had.

and welcome!

It's a re-issue.
Got it from a friend's shop.
Being wondering why he stocked Ovations for a while, as my usual taste is for more traditional guitars. Having said that, a few models had impressed me. Then he got the Josh White in and I was really impressed. Got it last saturday, it's a fine instrument IMO.

Thanks guys.
It always takes a while to get the most from a new guitar but I am enjoying getting to know this guitar alot.

Patch: I see you have a few of the collectors series. I remember trying one a couple of years ago, don't know the year (of the model). It almost had a parlour guitar feel about it. It also had a touch rensitive, slide volume control, on the side. I was interseted but it had damage and they weren't prepared to haggle. Any idea what year/model it was?

That would be a 97. Came in 2 versions, one with a standard 1 11/16ths neck-width and the other with the same 1 7/8ths neck-width as the Josh White. In my opinion this is the coolest collectors of them all.

I used to have an original '68 Josh White which was a great guitar. The reissues are even better.

The collectors was a 1997. There were both regular and wide-neck versions.

I have an original Josh White. It is an awesome guitar. I can't do it justice. You've got yourself a very rare bird. Congratulations!

And lest I forget, welcome!

Thanks Paul.
I'm sure the one I tried had the wider neck.
Least I know what to look out for now.
Shame I missed the oppertunity to get one back then.

dweezil, my wife wouldn't agree with me, but I think you should go for one of Al's Lav Koas instead of the 06 Collector.

Guess what I have for sale?

And it's in EXCELLENT condition!

I'll be putting a for sale thread up later tonight when I have time to write it and upload more pictures. (Dinner time first though.)

It's the narrow neck BTW, but a fantastic instrument! I have two, but only need one. I'll be hoping for $799 shipped in the U.S., but I'm willing to ship overseas as well if the buyer pays the shipping.)

I can't call you weird because my wife feels the same way. But she's weird.
The LAVs have wider necks and mine is a 12 fretter. Besides that, it's worth something to me at least that it's one of 12 made. If it's not your cup of tea, go for the 06.

To each their own, but the LAV and the '06 Collector and not the same guitar with different cosmetics. They are very different guitars tone wise and how they play. Sonically to my ears the '06 has less volume and high end than the LAV. Both sound nice, but depends whjat tone you're after. I prefer the playability of the LAV due to the slightly wider neck. Just my opinion. Dave

I've played 2 of the 06s. The first one sounded very tight and I wasn't impressed with the sound or the contour bowl. The second sounded much fuller and I liked the feel of the contour bowl. Both were in Portland. I suspect the second had opened up a bit and I had gained some weight to match the contour.
My LAV Koa had plenty of bass right off the bat, but if I could have found an 06 for less than $1000, I may have bought it instead of the LAV. I wouldn't be able to justify both, even with my complex system of justifications. I think it would be cool to have a 14 fret LAV Koa too, though.

Hey! Oasis come from the rough end of Manchester, not Lancashire and anyways, I was born in Surrey and have retained my southern accent. I do work in Blackburn though and most of the 10,000 holes have been filled in now.

Anybody know if there are any differences between the original and re-issued "Josh White"?

I'm no expert, but ... the original had an inlaid rosette, and I believe the reissue has the stick on type. I think some of the very early Josh's had a three piece tops, although my original is a two piece top. The tuners are not exactly the same, but that is to be expected. Adise from that, they are as authentically identical as possible.

Thanks stonebobbo.
A stick-on rossette seems a bit cheap on a guitar of this price.
Small thing though, unlike the BIG tone.
Cheers.

I wrote a long thread somewhere about this.

Main difference original JW vs. the reissue is the headstock angle, tuners and top. Bobbo is right some originals are 2 piece tops and the earlier ones are 3 piece. Originals and reissues both have inlaid rosette.

Interestingly the originals and the reissues have quite a different sound. I don't know why. Charlie Ramon wrote a thread about this. Unlike the original balladeer and the reissue balladeer which sound absolutely identical.

Here is the old thread:

JW reissue vs original

In the meantime the factory made me a rebuild of the original JW shown in this thread. Interestingly the rebuild has a completely different sound compared to Kurt´s reissue (I played them sid-by-side).

Both good guitars. The headstock angle isn't that big a deal sing it's a slot head and you have a really sharp angle over the nut anyway. When you're dealing with a 7* vs a 14* ph angle there's a noticable difference there.

Thanks for all the info guys. :)
Just replaced the strings on my Josh. Not sure what it came with but I've put Elixer PB Nonos on (12-53).
Wow, now it's singing. It already had the thick, yet articulate tone I like, with plenty of projection. Now it has a lot more zing, it suits finger and flat picking beautifully. really enjoying discovering all this beauty can do.
Cheers all :D

Can't find out elsewhere.
