Location: CA | After admiring the second-gen Vipers from afar for several years, I scored a CV68 last eve for $250, which included the case and a Peavey practice amp. Guitar is virtually unplayed and aesthetically pristine as the seller bought it to learn but lost interest. There aren't even any pick scratches. However, the preamp/equalizer doesn't work. It has a burnt place on the circuit board. I have no problem getting another from Ovation and installing it, but here's my main question:
Could the battery orientation have anything to do with the bad pre-amp. This thing takes a square 9-volt like everything else, but there is no indication in the receptacle which side is supposed to be positive — adn the battery fits both ways! I know in a car if you hook stuff up backwards, you're in major trouble. Does it matter with this guitar, and if so can anyone tell me which way is correct?
Second question: Since the propaganda always said this guitar "blurred the line between acoustic and electric", should the new strings be electrics or acoustics?
Thanks much. |

| Can't help you with the first question, but as far as strings are concerned I always used acoustic strings on the one I once had - same slim-line PUassy as the bowl gits. Since the "acoustic" tone is only slightly louder than any other hollow body electric you may as well put extra lights on it for easier string bends. |

Most pre-amps have a diode that 'blocks'/protects reverse polarity.
Can you take a pic of the circuit board and the burnt spot? |

Location: CA | Photos forthcoming. Working today but will take some this eve. And yes, will do a few snappies of burnt pre-amp board. |

Location: CA | Update — I have pulled out the electon microscope and discovered that there actually is a "+" indication on one side of the battery receptacle. But dang, doesn't seem like a great idea to have a receptacle that's so easy to make a mistake with. But as pointed out above, I guess the circuitry is protected, so no big deal.
I have taken a bunch of pics of the new git for you to lust over (well, celebrity-level lust anyway),but the 'members only' section hasn't let me in all afternoon. So they'll have to wait. Until then, thanks for all the responses and info. |
