I started noticing a buzz when I played a C# on the A string. At first I thought it was something resonating outside the guitar, but then I realised it was coming from within. I took the manhole cover off but couldn't find the source. Then I took the battery compartment out and it disappeared. I put the battery compartment back in and it seems fixed.

The preamp is an Optima which has a separate battery compartment. Has anyone else had this issue? I'm hoping it doesn't reappear, but am thinking of putting a piece of cardboard under the battery, using the theory that the springs which push on the terminals are the source of the vibration.

You may want to make sure all of the screws that hold the can in place are tight.

when it's appart tap it with something and see if you can get the rattle then. might help in tracking it down.
