Location: SoCal | I posted this question in another thread, but I'm really kind of curious. How many 1537's were built in the first year of production, 1983? We can't go by serial numbers because they were all mixed in with other US built Ovations.
Anybody have any thoughts on this? Bill? |

The 1537 was a true production run but, it was a new line and only made for two years or so. Based on the assmption that the Elite represented, at best, 1/4 of the guitars produced over two years, I get 3000-4000. Total guess.

Location: Phoenix AZ | Jeff, I think you're high (excuse the pun). What I mean is, just think of all the '83-'84 Ovations you see on ebay and what small percentage of them are 1537's. Yes the number is small because people don't want to part with them. But it's also small because there aren't too many of them. I bet the number is more like 1500. Just a guess.

I could easily go for that number. I just figured that Ovation (not Adamas) wouldn't tool up to make a production guitar of only 1500 units. I was fiquring about 1500 per year of production. |

Location: SoCal | According to the book, cwkII said that in 1985, Ovation built 6,000 guitars in Hartford. Now the 1537's were built in Moosup before being moved to Hartford in 85 (I think). I would doubt if more than 100 were built that first year. It was a brand new product, essentially hand built at the Adamas facility......
But I think I've been given a lead on how to find out. Won't happen today, but I'll let you know..... |

Location: Central Florida | Interesting thread, but I gotta ask a question, and I'm not being critical, mind you, just curious.
What is it that drives us to want to know (or, better said, HAVE to know) things like how many units of our beloved guitar were made? I mean, if we already know we love the guitar and have bonded with it because it's a great guitar, what difference does it make how many were produced? Will we love it more if we discover that only a few hundred or so were made? Or conversely, will we suddenly love it less if we find out that ours is only one of several thousand? Why do we find it so necessary to know this stuff?
I do this too, so like I said, I'm not criticizing anyone else, just wondering why we "guitar nuts" get so caught up in this kind of minutia that makes our hair hurt if we think about it too much. |

I love the ebay writeups for "rare" guitars, especially when there is another one just like it on the same page. I have a "rare" BMW Mtechnic, that is basically a dressed up 323ic. I bought it only because it was rare, the seller didn't know how rare it was, and I needed another car. Those were logical reasons, but the emotional reason was that I like the idea of having something few people have. Others like to have the same thing everyone else has. Then there's Dave, who doesn't fit any category. |

I will throw in that we would also cut the front forks off of "spare" bikes and jam as many extensions to the front forks as possible. The limit was around 5 because after that they would buckle or come apart over a curb.
The term in our neighborhood for an effeminate young man was "Quee-ahh". It was used liberaly and often in he wrong context. |

We took old broomsticks and launched them like javelins off clotheslines until one of the neighbor kids took one in the forehead. Never put anybody's eye out, though, even though our mothers always said we would.
On baseball, the first game I saw, Warren Spahn pitched in Milwaukee and we sat out behind this no name in right field and cheered for Eddie Mathews and Rico Carty. The no name was Henry Aaron. Really nice guy who would talk with the fans in the bleechers during breaks. |

So 1900 divided by the number of models made and factoring in the ratio of Elites to Balladeers, Legends etc, and the fact that it was the first year of production brings me to 328. Actually, I gave up on the intelligent estimate and pulled that number out of my ass. Just like most of the expert witnesses I see. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Here's some more data to go with our wild ass guesses. In 84 they numbered the Elites separately and used a range of about 750. In 83 they made about 20 models that used the same serial number system as the 1537s and a total of about 11,000 guitars spread amont those 20 models. That's only 550 per model and we know they made lots more Balladeers, Custom Balladeers and Legends than 1537s. I bet most of us are way high, but Waskel will bust me if I change my guess. |

It's interesting, because all this time, I thought my 1537 was number 1400 and change of the 1537's built. It wasn't 'til last week that I realized that that number was way off.
The person I'm talking with is Nick Mackin, the guy who came up with the 1537 concept. Unless you guys have gone back and read old posts, you may not be aware that Charlie was opposed to the 1537's. His attitude was that Ovation built carbon graphite top guitars in that configuration, not wood topped guitars. But the guitars were so good and sold well, so he had to relent.
When I got hold of Nick this morning, he really didn't know how many were built and wanted some time to think about it (or pull a WAG out of his ass). But there are no records on it (I checked with Keller), so Nick's guestimate is going to be the best we can do.
I find it satisfying that I was the first vocal member of this board to advocate the 1537's (Bill obviously had one first, Al's had them, and Kim had one at one time or another). Now there are 19 members who own them, and a couple own more than one. They are truly great guitars. |

Location: SoCal | Just got off the phone with Nick. Hold on to your hats, but he estimated that they might have built as many as 1000-1500 1537's. He doesn't have any exact records, but he said it was a very popular guitar and everybody and his brother wanted one when they came out.
Oh, and somebody asked me what number I was guessing? I'd say, about 1000-1500....
But that number may also include the entire run at Moosup. The Elites were moved to New Harford in mid 1984.
Looking at the serial numbers for 1983 production we can guess that Ovation built just over 11,200 guitars in 1983, or about 936 per month. The 1537's first serial numbers were 301001 (I think that this is what I was told years ago). This would put production starting in about August 1983. If my 1537 was number 30214xx (I'm not trying to be coy, I can't remember the exact number and I'm too lazy to go look), then it was probably built in late September 1983. A WAG? Yeah, but it's probably the best I'm going to be able to do. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | It was the only Elite built in 83-84, right? They numbered the Elites separately in 1984 and those serial numbers cover a range of about 750. So that leaves 250 to 750 (using Nick's 1000 to 1500 estimate) for 1983. I'll bet it's closer to the 250 if they didn't start production till August. I'm too lazy to look up my number, too, but it was one of the higher ones built in 83 on Dave's serial number list. |

You have to compare the question, "How many 1537s were built in the first year of production, 1983?" with the answer "Nick said they may have built as many as 1000-1500". Moody doesn't say that Nick told him how many were built in both 1983 and 84, but that's how I read it. If we subtract the 750 or so made in 1984, there were 250 to 750 made in 1983. That puts most of us in the winner's circle. It also makes more sense that they made less in 83, a partial year, than they made in a full year of production in 1984.
Sometimes you guys need a lawyer to interpret this stuff. I say send Moody back to clarify the answer. |

Based upon serial numbers for 1983 which tells us approximately how many guitars were built for that year, and figuring that production of the 1537's started in August (again, based upon serial numbers and averages), it looks like as many 750 may have been built that first year, although that's just a best guess.
I'm starting to think that there never was a full year of production of the 1537's. Nick said that in mid 1984 production moved from Mooseup to New Hartford. That's when the guitars were changed (rosewood fingerboards, ivroid binding, etc.). If production started in August 1983 and ended when moved in the summer of 1984, then production only lasted for 10-11 months.

Location: Norman, OK | I'll accept whatever the official ruling is. :) My answer was for what I figured the the total number of 1537's in existance would have been for the full three years of production, figuring they ran about 300 a year, and about 250 for the one year they made 12 string 1538s. Just my guess at what it would take to run a profitable production quantity.

Location: Boise, Idaho | C'mon, Moody. It was 328. I am just surprised that they would have made so many so soon, unless they liked the prototypes so much they knew it would outsell the other models. Sounds like they may have been a lot less rare than some of the other models made in 83-84. Does the figure for Elites made in 1984 include something other than 1537s and 1547s? We know from the serial number list that there were about 750 Elites made in 1984. |

Plus th price list guide in the reference section here at OFC has the 1337 made for same years as 1537 (maybe it's just 1984, to lazy to double check).

Location: SoCal | I just got off the phone with Nick Mackin, who was one of the main guys behind the 1537's. He told me the following:
1. R&D started in March 1979
2. The first 18, which were prototypes, were built in the last quarter of 1982
3. Production started in January 1983. 5 were built that month.
4. 13 were built in February and 40 in March.
5. A total of 1082 were built in 1983.
6. The production of 1537's continued in Moosup during 1984, building 20-25 per month.
7. Production moved to New Hartford in 1985.
So now we know that 1082 were built in 1983 and between 240 and 300 were built in 1984, for a total not exceeding about 1400 total production of 1537's. |
