At the time nobody knew it was a christian cartoon with all the subliminal messages and figures. Oh look, here's Davey shoveling the steps to the church so everyone can attend christmas service. Way to go, Davey.
I've been told that I style my hair after Davey. Maybe I do. If it weren't for the christian thing maybe you could say I patterned my whole life after him? Heck, he's kind to others, respects adults, allows Sally (little sister) to play along, and he has multi-racial friends (in 1966 this was a big deal on network TV). As you will also recall, Davey was a drummer. And low and behold in my teen years so was I. Plus I like the name.

I can remember as a kid waking up at Crack o'Dark on Sunday mornings, turning on the TV, and D&G would be the second thing to come on when the TV stations FINALLY started broadcasting for the day (the first thing to come on was when NJ actually used to broadcast "Farming" programs early in the wee hours). |

My how things have gone full circle. Now NYU gets their funding from me.

My fondest memory of shows was every Saturday my dad would bring home blueprints that needed to be checked. He'd spread them out on the living room table and we'd watch 'Creature Features' (on WKBD, man the name of that is escaping me right now..Brad? Roger?) all day.
Then again, there was H. R. Puffenstuff, and Sigmund and the Sea Monsters. Quality programming from the (drug addled) minds of Sid and Marty Kroft. ;)
I third the Rockford Files, although I only got to watch it if I snuck out of bed. :) |

Oh Lord, I just remembered where I put my childhood...
What really hurts is watching these on TVLand or Nick and trying to explain to children and grandchildren that you saw them when they were "new". Kinda like going into a coffee shop and "Please Please Me" is playing, and you hear people saying, "I just love these really old songs."
And you think to yourself that you remember hearing it when it was first released.

Out here, we had a guy named Seymour doing the same thing... a guy dressed up all spooky, hosting a "horror movie" spot on a local L.A. station. Did nothing but tell lame jokes that you couldn't help but laught at... the lamer, the better!
Several years later, Elvira got her start on the same station doing the same schtick. She wasn't as funny, but she was a lot better to look at! |

Location: Tennessee | Sorry. :o Growing up in southern California when I did it was all aerospace, TV/Movies, Music, and surfing. So those involved were our neighbors, and there were a lot of them ... not just the actors, but also cameramen, soundtechs, costumers, set designers, producers, directors, etc. One of my best friend's dad was the lead writer for Laugh-In. It all seemed so normal to us at the time; they were normal people living normal lives. Their kids went to school with us, were on our little league teams, and had birthday parties, etc. The families would shop in the grocery stores and come over for BBQs. They'd be one of the families having fun at our holiday block parties. It was only the really big stars and the producers who lived in Beverly Hills and Bel Air. The rest of them had to work hard and oftentimes struggled like the rest of the families to make ends meet while waiting for their next break. My dad used to tell me that it was the toughest business he ever knew. |
